Omg Mai's betrayal is so fucking epic "I love zuko more than I fear you" such a great line to deliver to azula of all fucking people! She never states it outright but she clearly puts no stock in the idea that love gives you strength and she KNOWS she can never inspire love (after all, her own mother "thought she was a monster" and her father obviously doesn't love anyone)

@adrianadamsson67572 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't be so sure, I do have a lot of sympathy for Azula and her situation, so she has at least managed to generate an emotion in me that is similar to love. Thing is with love, it isn't very logical, which makes it possible to care for even terrible people. Azula would probably be surprised how many people would be willing to give her a chance if she dropped her guard and exposed her heart to others. But part of the tragedy with Azula is that she is afraid to do so as she was raised to believe that she show any vulnerability is to open yourself up to be exploited, and this is partially true, at least when you're surrounded by people like Ozai and most of the fire nation elite. But while she doesn't show it, it has been shown but Azula has a different side to her, the side of her that resents the fact that her mother thought she was a monster, the part of her that sought love and acceptance from her father, the part of her needed friends like Mai and Ty Lee. The reason Azula had a breakdown is that unlike Ozai, Azula actually needs her relationships with other people to function. Underneath her façade of cold ruthlessness, Azula is a teenager that above all things wants deep connections with others, but is unable to establish a genuine friendship due to being raised by an abusive father such as Ozai. This makes her very easy for me to sympathize with and even love. For me I think it is proportional to need and few would need that support more than Azula.
@QuestionableLifeChoices2 жыл бұрын
@@adrianadamsson6757 but that just leads us back to her not putting any stock in love being a strength. Ozai shaped her and while she may not ultimately be exactly like him, she thinks far too like him naturally (and it does come naturally seeing as she never once stumbles in that regard) for her to be truly redeemable. Pityable, absolutely, but I think she genuinely enjoys having power over others too much for her to ever be someone that someone else would let themselves fall in that kind of deep devoted no matter what love with. Because while love may not be rational, you CAN cut it off at the knees before it goes too far if it's clear that the other person can never give you what you need or want. Maybe one day she would be somewhat redeemable, but it wouldn't be anytime soon, and I still don't think she would be a good person at the end of it, just maybe not an evil person. Interesting debate!
@charlessoliman31512 жыл бұрын
@@QuestionableLifeChoices She could probably be an interesting anti-hero. Someone who would reluctantly do the right thing if it helped her but then ruin it by falling back on old mentality or actually feeling vulnerable and aggressively overcompensating. And at that moment of clarity/weakness being taken out by a "righteous" avenger who simply had one good day.

Letting him live is actually worse for another reason too; at the time he was in command, the Fire Nation policy on waterbenders was capture, not kill, as they didn't want to accidentally kill an Avatar in-hiding and reset the cycle to the next nation, the Earth Kingdom, who are their only real remaining rival. Yon Rha instead killed his assumed waterbender and was likely demoted and removed from command. The fact that a once important military commander of the southern fleet is now living a humble life with his mother speaks volumes of his fall from grace and the lack of a decent military pension. I love how, very soon after the Firebending Masters episode, we can see the strides Zuko makes in regards to his firebending. I mean, in every previous episode he tended to firebend with an angry expression on his face, making lots of exclamations, getting frustrated easily, and almost always losing to Azula immediately despite being arguably a much better bender than your run-of-the-mill fire nation soldier. However, right after the meeting with the dragons, he starts bending much more calmly and quietly, and in fact does much better in his fights against Azula. Gotta love that attention to detail! 😊
@ethanotoroculus1060 Жыл бұрын
I dunno if I agree with 100% of this, but I like the sentiment. I think what makes Zuko powerful isn't any talent with bending abilities, but whenever we see him rely on feats of athleticism. It seems like he's a lot better suited to those types of maneuvers but prioritizes the wrong things because of his dad mounting pressures on him to be more like Azula. Hence why his most impressive feats in combat come either from learned techniques from Iroh or his time as the Blue Spirit.

The firebending masters is my favorite episode of The series. And learning that Iroh was once here, learning from The dragons was amazing and makes so much sense! Had to convince so many people to watch before it got released in Netflix and people started re discovering this gem. Now being older, I appreciate the greater and deeper meanings in the show, I watch it almost every year, sometimes several times (e.g. reactions videos like this). I also introduced this to my nephew and he too became a quick fan. This show is for everyone, so far I haven't heard anyone who has watched the show fully, not like this. 30:34 The funny thing about Toph's counterpart in the Ember Island Players is that Toph herself was one of the last of the Gaang to be designed; And she *WAS* initially going to be a big, buff dude, but the designers decided to make her a smaller, young girl who was blind to give her character growth and her bending abilities more impact. They also gave her a backstory that was emotional and morally-driven so the audience knows she's not just a hard shell and she actually has feelings and strong moral reasons for doing things, even if she is a little rough around the edges due to lack of socializing. (She's the child of aristocrats running away against her parents' will so she can help the Avatar, despite her parents thinking she's completely helpless and weak. This makes her real strength come out better than if she were a big strong man) Making her actor counterpart look a LOT like "her" original design was a joke as a result.

4:35 Solstices and Equinoxes were humans' first real way to visibly mark the passage of years. There's some really cool ancient monuments from just about every culture where the sunlight will shine through very specific places only on those special dates. It's some cool shizzle. 34:14 I guess you have to watch the movie once the show's over... heh heh heh...

It's funny how in The Boiling Rock: Part 2 Azula says she's a "people person" yet couldn't read how Mai and Ty Lee would betray her. And funny how Azula KNEW she does things through fear hence "No, YOU miscalculated! You should've feared me more!" And in the episode The Southern Raiders, in the end, I love how Zuko asked Aang "What're you gonna do when you face my father?" oh, and before I forget "HONOR!" XD

I am so excited for you to watch the eeeeeend! I really hope you go onto The Legend of Korra after this. It's not as strong as a contiguous narrative as Aang's story is. The overall story is there, but each season is a bit more of it's own arc than it was in the first series. Additionally though, the themes and subjects that Korra's story explores are fantastic.

You mention the animation additions, there are three scenes in Boiling Rock Part 2 that stand out so much for me, and they all involve Mai’s eyes. When Zuko leaves her in the cell, when they stare at each other after she saves the gondola, and her look of shock when Ty Lee saves her. They’re such beautiful moments framed so perfectly just in Mai’s eyes.

The only time it felt almost like the first time was introducing this to my kids for their first watch. Enjoying this show through their eyes was a treat. Now watching this lovely woman watch it the first time gives me a sense of enjoyment again. Never the same when I first watched it but still pretty good. This show is a masterpiece from beginning to end.

"The Firebending Masters" is such a beautiful episode. This show is gorgeous in so many ways, but the cinematography in that episode is on another level. When they dance with the dragons. The different shades of fire. Hell, they actually animated "shaky cam" when the dragons emerged; it makes that scene feel so visceral and weighty. There are so many impressive aesthetic details in this show that it's almost ridiculous. The quality of the show is amazing.

31:50 In theater, and in film, moving right is a departure/progression, and moving left is a return/regression. Don’t believe me? Watch The Lion King. Or Shrek the Musical (the only exceptions are when set pieces or theater corridors matter). In the Ember Island Play, Zuko departed in shame and returned with honor. Flipping the scar’s side is theatrical symbolism to match this. When in reality, Zuko found shame in his return, and honor when he left.
