The fourth generation of gaming comes to a close as Nintendo and Sega move beyond the SNES and Genesis for more advanced hardware. However, the legacy of these consoles and this era of gaming, continues to this day.

This was a great series. I was lucky enough to have grown up and lived through the golden era of Video Games with events like Sonic Tuesday, the Sonic vs Mario rivalry and the rise ot the attitude era of Video Games firmly cemented in my mind. SEGA vs Nintendo was a rivalry that produced some of the finest Video Games ever made for their glorious 16-bit machines, games we still yearn to play today. Thanks for making these nostalgic videos 👍

@@buckroger6456 It really was the best era for gaming. Everyone had their favourite console, favourite mascot, favourite game series...that's what made it the golden era of Video Games, the competition and rivalry that went from the playground to the boardroom, everyone had a favourite. Because of this competition from SEGA and Nintendo, Game Developers and Consumers, Gaming went from basic Platformers and standard turn based linear RPG's to fully fleshed out gaming worlds with rediculously gorgeous graphics and multi-layered RPG gameplay mechanics like time travel, superb Arcade ports of classic 2D fighting games for both consoles, and let's not forget the now legendary TV advertising campaigns of the era that back them up. The jump from the classic 8-bit machines to the amazing 16-bit powerhouse consoles was a revalation in Gaming, starting so many trends that lead the Games Industry on the road to where it is today.

@@jamesaitchison9478 man that is pretty much spot on. The jump from 8bit to 16bit was just huge then the next jump really added so much more and learned a lot from all the things the 16bit gen was doing, like the push into the CD format for games. We may never see another video game age like that where we had such a massive jump and change in games. I never seen the console wars at school. I guess everyone that I knew just loved gaming and those of us that had different systems were glade of since it meant going to a friend's house to game meant playing games on a system you didn't have. We even use to trade systems with we other for a weekend.

@@buckroger6456 That's exactly how it was. I had a Super NES, my friend had a Mega-Drive and we'd play each others games at our respective houses...we'd even swap Consoles for a weekend every now and then. And you can't beat two player games like Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter II or Sensible Soccer when your rival is sitting next to you. Let the banter begin lol. SEGA's alterior, less kid-friendly marketing campaigns obviously inspired SONY's Playstation advertising strategy of aiming at a more mature market. The legacy of the 16-bit wars can still be felt in the Video Games Industry to this day. Good times...the best of times. Truly the defining era of Video Gmes. The 16-bit era revolutionised everything about Gaming. From Censorship ratings being standardised across the Industry, to bringing genuine Arcade quality titles to the Living Room like Street Fighter II, while developing new CD Disc technology that would be standard across the games Industry to this very day to basic online network gaming and downloads; and not forgeting the now infamous SEGA TV. Dabbling into Full Motion Video gaming brought it's drawbacks, while achieving basic full Polygonal graphics rendering, multi-layered full screen rotation...the list goes on and on of the boudries that were not only broken, but of entirely new boundries being established heralding the modern era of Video Games that we know today.

@@jamesaitchison9478 the 16bit era is still my favorite time in gaming. For me nothing beats classic 2 player couch co-op or vs. Friday nights after school with your mates gaming it up all night, man nothing beats that. My KZbin name is from my favorite mega drive game, Buck Rogers countdown to doomsday. I still play a lot of 16bit games that I've owned since back then and oddly enough I've never got bored of them. I still remember being blown away by Flashback and how amazing it looked, or the cool FMV games at the times since you've never seen anything like it.

It was a repeating history genesis outselling SNES, Sega fucked around and Nintendo beat em. 360 was outselling the ps3, Microsoft fucked around Nd Sony beat em.

I agree with you, Initially, it was Sony got fucked by the PS3's high prices and a crappy network and Microsoft steamed forward (except for the RROD), and once the Kinect was introduced, It fucked Microsoft hard, while Sony beat em by redesigning, changing PSN, and releasing very good games.

The Genesis and TG16 didn't impress me much back in the day: I had friends with those systems, and I liked their better graphics, but they didn't feature the longer adventures I adored on the NES, like Zelda, Mario, Final Fantasy, and Castlevania. These series continued on the SNES, which made me excited to get one. Sonic and Bonk and the like felt a bit shallow to me. Arcade games were becoming dull: it was all about Street Fighter II when that was released, and I recall not really caring about how nerfed the SNES version of Final Fight was because my friends and I were kind of done with beat-em-ups. Hence, my apathy towards Streets of Rage (2). We wanted 1 vs 1 suspense, and that's what the SNES delivered in 1992 in our homes, which to me sealed the deal. Genesis had NHLPA '93, which was also huge, but Super Mario Kart had the battle mode, and 1993 had Super Bomberman. By 1994 the SNES had so many classics like Super Metroid, Secret of Mana, and Final Fantasy 6, it just felt like a lopsided battle to me. I never cared about Mortal Kombat's blood because I was already long bored with the arcade version. MK2 was interesting enough to get for home console, though. As much as I respect the Genesis library, and I've enjoyed plenty of their games (especially Thunder Force 4, Gunstar Heroes, and Contra Hard Corps), I've never really understood why Genesis fans were so aggressive about their supposed superiority. They still tend to get defensive, if not hostile, and it continues to amaze me, hah! If you're a Sega fanboy, I'd love to hear more as to why you care(d) so much about having a better console!

It's pretty simple Sega did instant gratification arcade style games better then Nintendo and made more of them because they were focused on the Western market. The Genesis felt like the American console back in the day. Western game development in general improved light years in the Genesis prime years between 91-95. At the end of the day it will come down to your favorite games of the era. I prefer Sega's platformers (Sonic, Ristar, Dynamite Headdy etc.) over Nintendo's (Mario, DK, Plok) All have overworld maps, are marathons to get through and their pacing isn't for me. Genesis beat em ups (SOR 1-3, GA 1-3, Alien Storm, Punisher, Final Fight CD, Splatterhouse 2-3, Comix Zone etc ) Beat out a SNES lineup gimped by a bunch of games that can't push more then 3 enemies on screen at once. Some good SNES beat em ups are ( Ninja Warriors, Turtles in Time, Sonic Blast Man 2, King of Dragons, Final Fight 3). Shooters, run and guns and sports all comfortably better on Genesis. Super Nintendo has the huge advantage in JRPG'S which are less playable then Sega CD FMV's 🤷🏼‍♂️

@@supersexysega Thanks for sharing your experiences! Yeah, Electronic Arts made a big difference, and their sports games had smoother framerates until 1993, which did matter a lot. I always wondered how jealous Sega players were of NCAA Basketball, which I personally loved.

@@madspunky EA Sports definitely played a role. Their SNES versions became respectable mid generation still in most cases outdone by the Genesis version. More importantly for Genesis owners was the Sega Sports label. I felt NFL 94' Starring Joe Montana was easily the best 16-bit football game. Greatest Heavyweights of the Ring the best 16-bit boxing game, ATP Tournament Tennis the best Tennis game. NBA Action 94' the best Basketball game until NBA Live 95 and the World Series Baseball franchise which was the best of it's time. These were all 1st party Genesis exclusive. What I was jealous of on the SNES was Capcom giving 90% of their support to the SNES. They did no exclusive in house games for the Genesis only ports of their SNES versions. Would have been nice to see a King of Dragons, Mega Man X Genesis port. Konami to a far lesser extent. Would have been nice to get a few more exclusives from them. Natsume was a third party I really wish had done some Genesis stuff. Wild Guns, Ninga Warriors, Pocky and Rocky, Power Rangers Fighting Edition etc. Most of their stuff was to my taste.
@madspunky
@madspunky 3 жыл бұрын
@@supersexysega Ah yes, Montana '94 was something special, as were the Mutant League games, and Bill Walsh. However, I still got my fix playing Madden '94, Tecmo Super Bowl, and Quarterback club. Was ATP as good as Super Tennis in your opinion? I've never played that one, looking it up now! As for basketball, which was my favorite sport: besides NCAA I also liked Showdown, which was earlier on the SNES. I wasn't aware anybody actually liked NBA Action '94, lol! I ended up loving Action '95 because of how you could make teams, but I feel like I was the only one who cared. I've always felt that Hard Corps and Bloodlines were better than their SNES counterparts, but they weren't released until '94, and I didn't feel like paying 60 bucks for that kind of game anymore. Later got into them via emulation. Mega Man X and X2 were indeed also a reason to love my SNES (X3 apparently sucked, no shame in skipping that one!). King of Dragons ended up being my favorite beat-em-up thanks to its classes for multiplayer. Wish there was a 4-player hack of the game!
