My hundred-and-ten-day-old Shepsky (German Shepard and Husky) is a terror! Biting, barking, chewing, and jumping is the way she rolls. When I took her to puppy training class they sequestered us in a corner (both of us wearing dunce caps) and placed a curtain around us so she wouldn't disrupt the other dogs (and clients). I'm a librarian and a professional when it comes to finding information. The conclusion of my intensive research is: YOU ARE THE BEST. CLEAR, CONCISE, AND INFORMATIVE. Thank you.

Simply amazing, the achievements my 2 yo pointer has made with your videos are spectacular, haha the markers are pure brain manipulations! I commited the mistake of teaching her the command stay, as she used to follow me when I moved, I will try not to use it anymore. Also when I am in the field she just got mad going around chasing birds and smelling everything, like a possessed, not even want the traits, guess I will have to repeat repeat and repeat. Learning more by watching your videos and your techniques are very effective with my dogs. Can you make a video on how to walk two overly excited dogs? I have 2 dogs that get overly excited when i put their leashes on, it's like they want to play rather than to walk. Everytime i try walking them together, their leashes get entangled. Please make a video about that topic, would be a great help for me. More power to your channel and thank you for sharing your expertise! Subscriber from The Philippines! 🇵🇭

Great video possible new subscriber here. Depends on if Ruby and I get some love in return. I love that you use verbal markers. Verbal markers are superior to those annoying clickers. I do a lot of spur of the moment behavior capture and clickers are useless with that. Plus with verbal markers you can add or remove energy.

Hi Nate, really appreciate your videos and training style, its great! Just wanted to ask, im coming to some of this training late (14 weeks), my dog is v food driven and knows 'yes' as the marker for doing the action right, have not set a terminal marker / continuation marker specifically and she sees yes as either/or - how do i correct her if she breaks a command after i say yes - do i just guide her back to it and make her stay and wait before giving the treat? for example on a sit as i walk away. Thanks in advance!

I really like your videos and how they are designed to teach from start to finish. Just an observation, at 12:25 when you were demonstrating your dog moving to the heel position, you stepped back with your left leg and your dog kept moving with you. Your dog is trained to cue off the movement of your left leg when it comes to a non verbal cue movement so wouldn't you want to step back with your right leg in that situation? Not trying to be a sharpshooter here, just making a training point. Thanks!!

Make sure you say the verbal command before the hand signal and use the terminal marker more in the training. Hi Nate I just got a german shepherd puppy 2 months ago and I am loving your videos they are really helpful!! Just a few question I am hoping you could help me with please. Btw the gs is 19 weeks old and is a female. Question 1.) I live in the country but my actual back yard isn't huge but there are loads of fields around me, I have been starting to play fetch and practising sits, stays etc in my local park on a 30-metre line, but now the restriction due to covid are back, I can't go there anymore. As I mentioned the fields around me are big enough however they occasionally have livestock eg cows and sheep in them, is it ok to train/play with her in these fields or would this encourage her to go there in the future when she is allowed to be off the lease by herself for example go rouge or chase sheep? Q2.) Since I have started watching ur videos I want to change a few of my commands for example, my terminal command is ”ok” and I would like to change it to ”free” also my ”drop it” command to ”out” also some of my hand gestures to yours, is it too late after 2 months training to change these? Q3.) My puppy is currently teething and is finding it hard to digest here food/treats and it is starting to affect her training as she stops mid training and chews for well ever lol and I don't want to use to much cheese in case she turns into a gigantic hamster/mouse that and it gives her diarrhoea if she has to much. Any suggestion to what treats to give her during this period? Q4 - Last one). I want to be able and have started to train a focused heel(shes not conditioned yet though to it) the one when she looks at tour face and is in tight, but when i want to go on a long walk it obviously doesn’t make sense to ask her to do this however, i would like her to walk in say a ”relaxed heel” lol just by my side not ahead, and then also as she isn't ready to go off lead I have been letting her on a longer lead 6 meter (I have and extendable lead that goes either 4 or 6 meters) or so and have been giving her a bit more freedom / space to go discover a little on the 6 meter on her harness then I change the lead from harness to collar when walking passed people/dogs/ or on the side of the road and have been saying ”walk nice” so my question is is there some command I should teach her to do a ”relaxed heel”or how should it be done differently or I am doing it wrong? Thank you so so much, Nate, and keep up the great work!
@NateSchoemer
@NateSchoemer 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! 1) It should be okay as long as you continue to train your dog and develop reliability with all the commands. 2) You can change the name of a command at any time. It shouldn't be an issue. 3) I like to use freeze dried dog food. With a puppy or a new dog in training, I will often start with a high-quality dry food (I like stella and chewy freeze dried coated kibble) during the training process. I also usually give the puppy raw goat milk from answers, to help ensure the dog is getting enough quality nutrition. If I don't have enough time for a training session, then I soak the kibble in water or raw goat milk and stuff it into a kong or raw bone, then freeze it. In addition, I train with freeze-dried dog food, but that can be very pricey. amzn.to/2W88zMf Usually, a high-quality kibble will be okay. I transition them to raw when all the main training is completed and then use the freeze dried dog food while training. 4) Just use a different command for your loose leash walking. For Arih I use "heel" for her focused heel and "with me" for her loose leash walking. kzbin.info/www/bejne/e2jdpaaiZZ6Xhas I hope this helps and thanks for supporting the channel.

It depends on a lot on the individual dog, but yes. If you put in the work, you can do this type of training with your dog. :)

Could you show options on lengthening time in the standing heel? Like maybe a 30 sec stand stay. Dogs like to use almost a default to sit. I need more stand heel and for durations.

This is an old video but I wanted to ask: Can you get this amount of body awareness with a big "floppy" dog like a German Shepherd? I see malinois doing flip finishes and racing around all stiff-bodied and it looks awesome, but I can never get that level of strength from my German Shepherd. Is it even possible? EDIT: just realised you did it with Harley too 😁

What are the merits of teaching heel to the left side? I’ve taught my Rottweiler to mainly heel to the right as I’m right handed and if/when he has a red moment I’ve got control with my stronger arm because it can be like trying to wrestle a gorilla 😮

Should I use the "heel" command only to bring my dog into the position or also to let her know to go close by my side when we're walking together?
@NateSchoemer
@NateSchoemer 4 жыл бұрын
I use the heel command as a position. The position next to me and when I walk, my dog must walk with me in order to maintain the heel position. Lastly, when I stop moving I want my dog to sit next to me in heel position. I hope that makes sense and thanks for the question! :)

I have a one year old border collie, I've never used conditioners like you, I usually just say "very good" or "good girl" stuff like that, yet she still does listen to me when I ask her to sit o go to her "place"... At this point in her life where I've already "conditioned" her in a wrong manner, is it still possible to start from 0 with your method? Or must i try something else due to her mind not being fresh and/or her somewhat advanced age ?

A dog can still learn without marker, but it does help make it more clear for our dogs. Even if your dog has already had training, you can still implement all the techniques in my training videos. :)

All dogs are food motivated. Often dogs will seem like they are not food motivated if they are always fed out of a bowl or they are free fed. When you make them work for the food, the food drive will naturally go it. In addition, you can use toys or petting as a primary reinforcer. Hope this helps! :)
