Ancient times rules laws were different. It was important to maintain sanctity of mandir, so those who ate and sold meat were forbidden to enter temple. Nothing personal. Poets also understood this. Sadhna pada of yogasutra too teaches abstinence and vegetarian diet as very important. Abhanga refers to poet saying he is inferior in dharmik context. They were not being discriminated against out of spite or prejudice. It is important to understand history because nowadays people are needlessly villifying Brahmans.

Vaishya were allowed to enter the Temple. and both these Varna used to consumed meat all other stuff of non veg food as their food. Don't forget that costal area Brahmins particularly Goan Brahmin even today eats sea food.

Hence jati heen meant jobless, nontaxpayer. Temples were sponsored by taxpayer hence nontaxpayer would be forbidden. Temples were social hubs too, not just for puja, prayers. Even Sant Gyaneshwar were excomm then parents did suicide prayashchit. Even Kumaril Bhatt. Raghunathrao Peshwa too was excomm then sentenced to death. Chopping limbs, killing, honour suicides were norm worldwide. Japanese did Sepuku. Ancients were warrior like and tough rough people. Not to be judged by modern standards. Every society has rules, which if broken result in punishment. Atleast excomm is better than current system of rotting in jail for evedything. Those who ate and sold meat were called Chandalas and avoided by pure vege who practiced sattvik sadhna. In Sankracharya and Chandala story Chandala shows knowledge of Vedanta implies all society were educated. Bhajans of ancient bhaktas too shows they had sound knowledge of dharmik matters which was imp. This busts myths that some were not allowed. Ancients did dharmik practices seriously and laws were formed accordingly. But diff rajyas, had diff rajas, diff laws at diff times. There can never be one size fit all. Humans dont behave robotically alike over centuries. Ample historic articles available free online. And, every temple was made for particular purpose. Hinduism is vast and complex. Not simple like abrahmis where all congregate just for basic prayers and socialise.
