Hi, Mark! You know, my generation learned English mostly from textbooks, and it was primarily British English. Our grammar is pretty good, but casual conversation has always been challenging. Years ago, I had a tough experience in the U.S., but about two years ago, I started focusing on American English conversation intensively. Lucky for me, I ran into one of your videos. Since then, I've learned so much from watching your videos-eventually the older ones. Thank you so much, Mark. Your amazing teaching always makes my day! For example, I listened to this video twice this morning.

You are absolutely right! Native speakers make lots of mistakes, but the most interesting observation that I have made is they don't stress about it at all, unlike Eanglush learnets. I clearly remember the moment when I realized that while reading posts of native speakers on Twitter. It boosted my confidence in English a lot at that time.)

Mad English TV Yes, many characters in movies don't speak formal English because they lead lives that aren't normal everyday lives. They are unusual and interesting and speak in ways that are unusual. Or else they don't have much education and can't speak standard English well.

Hi! You nailed it! I am a Russian but I have American friends. It was a real shock when I had to correct them in their texts. I thought, how come, you are native and you keep writing it all over again? You know what they usually said!? We have been taught that way - spell the way you hear. That being said, I have to admit of local young generation being as illiterate in Russian :)

It's a matter of Degree. And you apply degree to an adjective, like 'big' or 'tall', whereas 'fun' is a noun. The adjective form of fun is 'funny'. So you can say 'funnier' when comparing between two things and 'funniest' while comparing three or more.

when I knew someone is a native speaker, I only focus on the conversation; while when I don't know who am I talking with, I probably will take a guess from his/her sentences. For example, when I live chat with customer service, I would tend to think this person must be not a native speaker if customer servicer makes any grammatic mistakes.

I think it's not a matter of not learning but people becoming lazy, especially when it concerns the homonyms that most Grammar Nazis go crazy over. I personally get seriously tripped up with Lie/Lay and I never know if I'm correctly using I or me. I try to communicate with somewhat proper grammar but sometimes it's fun to goof around. If I make an error, it's very unlikely anyone will even notice - the message is still understood and that's probably the most important thing. Regardless, I'm still up for 'perfecting' my native language skills!

I have seen some native speakers using double-negatives in sentences like "I ain't no killer" (I mean this was not exactly the sentence...of course 😅😅, but this is how they used I ain't and no together) I was wondering if this is the right way to say it 🤔🤔but I looked it up and it seems it's not grammatically correct. sometimes I feel so jealous of English people especially when I have to look at the meaning and usage of every idiom before using it but native speakers can even add new words 😅😂 guess that's the fun part of your native language: you're always right 😜

Bella ZHAO. I concluded that u mean native English speakers don't care the grammar rules? I don't think so. Compare to my native language Indonesian, native speakers follow the grammar rules 80 to 90 %.

Couldn't get past the blatant errors in the first "mistake". I suggest reading up on personal pronouns and how verb arguments work. The "Incorrect" sentence is both valid and standard, the "correct" one commits one of the more obvious errors of grammar possible in English, and the reason given for it being correct is... An entirely different sentence following an entirely different structure which does nothing to prove anything about the first two one way or the other (said sentence is both grammatically correct and an entirely valid way of imparting the intended information though.)

John is taller than me is absolutely correct why you think it is wrong since than can be a preposition that needs noun , noun phrase, noun clause,or pronoun to come after it as object of it like than me,is object pronoun; however,John is taller than I ,in fact , is not exactly correct compared to than I am as you mentioned since native speaker thinks that it should be fine not to put verb to be ,am in this case,John is taller than I am tall. is very absolutely correct. are you on the same page?

According to Raymond Murphy's grammar book, they both are correct. If we use subjects we need to add I am, I do etc.

Hundred dollars is enough for me. Is that correct? Sir, only few native speakers live here. Portuguese, Dutch and British ruled Srilanka before independence.(1948) So there is a mix of them.Their language is not standard. We don't find native speakers. We are aware of the mistakes of native speakers. Besides that i don't have an advance knowledge in english to notice their mistakes.

I've noticed that sometimes English speakers use "there is" instead of "there are". Like "there's a lot of people". Am I right? Or there's smthg I don't understand? thank you!

You're right! I forgot to put that one in the video. Native English speaker make that mistake all the time! The reason they do this is because "there're" is hard to say and it sounds strange. Haha There's so many people at the party. There're so many people at the party.
@laurencefraser
@laurencefraser 6 жыл бұрын
Illia Nieviezhyn people do do this, yes. It's not exactly a mistake though. It is an acceptable contraction in casual speech. Now, if they were saying it in full "There is a lot of people", that would be an error. "Are" and "is" are just different conjugations of the verb "be", but after "there" a contracted "are" is very likely to be lost, and the resulting "there people", seemingly losing the verb entirely, is worse for smooth communication than contracting the wrong form of "be". After all, "there's people" still contains all relevant information, "there people" does not, and in dialects where the the difference is apparent, sounds like someone failing to say "they're people", and in dialects where it Isn't sounds as though they're succeeding at it! Which is to say that being understood trumps following the 'rules' when the two conflict, and this is the result. (Because of English's stress timed syllables, natural speech will almost invariably contain such contractions, so just not using them is not really viable.) In other words, In spoken, contracted form it's not a mistake. In non-contracted form it would be. In written form it would be Unless as part of a quote or dialogue (depending on the style being used).

You said Samsung makes good phones, but according to my experience, no, in fact not only Samsung is not a good phone maker but also Samsung is a thief which steals other company's invent, in other word Samsung is not Apple or Sony and so on. Well, let's do homework, I think these kinds of mistake are among all languages. Some are important but some are not noticeable. The vital rule is to convey clearly.

Really? I've never owned a Samsung phone, but the S8 looks nice. Yes, usually big companies steal from smaller companies. A new phone called the OnePlus 5T was released today. I think it's a great product because it's half the price of the iPhone X and much better battery life. 🙂

Why do native english speakers often make mistakes of grammar in Canada or America? I guess they are immigrants and English isn't their first language too.
