I stopped braiding. Too much tension was being applied to my strands so i switched to twisting. The rope twist works well for me: less breakage and stretches my hair well enough to keep out tangles. Also i started combing my hair. I noticed whenever i did fingercombing i would loose so much hair than using an actual comb. Reason being, my hair tangled intensely and this led to breakage and knots which i had to cut out. I stopped trying to make my hair look straight. I had to accept kinky hair will never be naturally straight unless manipulated by heat which cuts my hair like crazy! Lately, hair has been flourishing in loose twists and in its kinky form. No more inflammation or scabs in the roots.

I never got steaming when there's steam in the shower. I stopped washing every week, fewer wash and gos, fewer detangling sessions, trying to look 'snatched', and less water. All this seemed to contribute to breakage and shedding and far too tine consuming. It's harder to find styles I enjoy, so I just have to get used to staying ugly all the time, but I've a lot less stress. I'll never let 2strand twists go though. A lot of these techniques also depend on length. Ik it sounds crazy but what works for short hair maintenance can become too overwhelming for longer hair maintenance, when considering weight and how worn out most of the hair has become is as it's old growth. That's my theory anyway, as I also noticed so many denounced what has worked for them in the past. A combination of that and some people getting product and brand endorsement lol but I don't think this is the case here.

I tried twists early in my hair journey which only lasted a very short while. Twists tend to loosen and my hair would become tangled, especially at the ends. I wear plaits and braid my hair all the way to the ends which keeps my hair from tangling. I’ve perfected a technique for unbraiding my ends without having to use my fingernails or a rat-tail comb. I apply some product (oil and conditioner) and gently pinch my braided ends, flattening them between my thumb and forefinger. This loosens the braid. I may rub the hair slightly between my fingers which makes it easy to unravel. ❤️

Yes!!!!!!! I stopped doing a lot of things to my hair. When I first converted to going natural, I was going crazy with the natural hair society on do this, don’t do that to your hair. Steam your hair or it won’t grow, keep in protective styles if I want longer hair. Use onion juice, rice water, avocado conditioner etc all the above for long beautiful natural hair. It was so confusing and tiring trying to keep up with do this and that. All I do is wash my hair weekly and put a leave in conditioner, and a little oil, that’s it and my hair has grown more and gotten thicker. I even found out most of the natural hair remedies on KZbin didn’t even make my hair grow. Different strokes for different folks. I do twist my hair and like you say it tangles as I untwist but now I don’t keep them twisted for long periods of time, only for 3-4 days. Loved your video, glad I found you 🥰plus ever you said made sense.

My protective styles were at least 6 weeks or longer and of course when I took them out I had extreme shedded hair and that was so scary! I found out my hair (high porosity) loves getting shampooed at least 3x a month. I am very happy I changed my routine. They said leave your hair alone and I found out my hair doesn't want to be left alone🖤. I am happy here. I don't twist my hair hardly ever anymore. I just grease it and plat it like how we did it back in the old days😆 and she loves it here💗.

This is a very interesting video. Kudos! You’ve given me a lot to think about.… I like my hair to be in twists that I can keep condensed because I wear wigs daily and I am hell-bent on protecting my natural hair underneath. Straight backs, braids or buns are not an option for me anymore because my hair suffers in braids and buns are too bulky. So I have been relying on twists for a while. I have noticed recently that my hair is starting to twist and tangle a bit more. So your video makes a lot of sense. However I feel that there is a middle ground. Because when I don’t apply that some type of twisting tension while doing twists, my hair definitely mats and tangles because it is too free to move around and not stretched out enough. I’m going to figure out a way to do my twists that when I am unraveling them they are not doing that thing you are showing in the clip.

I have high porosity hair, i like twists when i want to leave my hair alone and don’t want to add hair…bc it gives my roots a bit of a break. But i do agree with you overtime those types of styles make your hair crack which makes it look frizzy and you also have more mid shaft splits…i still do them tho. I stopped any type of “something-out” my hair hates them, i don’t conditioner after shampooing, i conditioner first! Update a year later…i also agree with you on steaming…i like to deep condition with heat, but i agree steaming the hair does make my hair frizzy overall. Also agree on rope twists, loose twists are my preferred twist. I can’t leave them in longer than 3 weeks but I’ve also learned my hair doesn’t like my mini twists longer than that anyway, if i stretch to 4 weeks my wash day will not be fun. I also this year i want to do more larger loose twists similar to how your hair is in this video. I also think minimizing the amount of product used between wash days has improved my overall hair health. If i condition properly on wash day, there’s no need to oil and butter every few days or everyday. I like using rose water with lemongrass and tea tree oil on my scalp every few days…only applying to my hair if there’s a bump in it, and that’s usually enough product until my next wash. Also, claw clips have been a game changer as well for length retention.

I'm aware that the stronger hold gels except for Eco Slay, which has to be refrigerated to keep for long, should be placed on a semi-botanical list but that is acceptable for me.

@@1GoldenBreeze thanks for the words of encouragement. 🙏🏿🙏🏿 I can't afford botanical gels right now because it's a bit expensive when the exchange rate is converted. I'll keep managing the synthetic ones till things get better.🤗🤗

I understand you feel rope twists are damaging to hair. What is your opinion on dreads and other locs?
@BeautyIn4C2 жыл бұрын
Wow, this is interesting information no wonder myhair does not thrive in braids or mini twists. It thrives best in loose twists..very minimal tangles as opposed to those tightly twisted ones. Do you now predetangle with conditioner only?

I’ve never steamed my hair outside of the regular steam you get taking a shower. I’m lazy, and this always seemed like an unnecessary extra step. Concerning rope twists: I did try them out before, but I found they were very difficult to remove and sometimes would cause my hair to break. I don’t like having any tension, so my twists are on the loose side in between washes. I also, like you, dropped the pre poo. Coconut oil feels amazing in my hair and is great for detangling, but I found it made thoroughly washing my scalp too difficult. I couldn’t really get my hair as clean as I needed. I tried pre pooing for a few months but abandoned it because now I realize I went 15 years without doing that and my hair was fine. The only other thing I would add is I don’t deep condition my hair regularly. I honestly only do it when I think about it, maybe 2 or 3 times a year. My hair thrives as long as it’s clean and I don’t go overboard with the maintenance. I always enjoy your videos. They’re very informative. I also love that your hair looks exactly like mine. ❤️

How about normal two strand twists? Are they also harmful? Cause I love using mini twists as a protective style
@jezeldelphin25342 жыл бұрын
I like your hair n it is a lot, well I am still educating myself about how to handle my hair so far it's going well. Coconut Oil is a no-no in my hair routine and hair products and I have a dry itchy scalp. My wash day routine start-up with bentonite clay n ACV, my homemade moisturising shampoo bar and deep conditioning hair mask and it makes my hair soft and more manageable to deal with. One routine I had to change was a mini twist as a protective style for two months because my hair got matted fast but I am satisfied with my hair growth by taking my supplements and treating my hair.

Once I learned that Kanekalon braiding hair can cause cancer, I took out my extensions. I don't know if I'll ever go back to extensions, but if I do, it won't be with synthetic hair.

I stopped using liquid shampoo and switched to bar and my hair is now longer than it's ever been. Liquid shampoo always caused a lot of tangles and breakage that I thought was normal but now I lose maybe 1/3 or better of the hair that I used to lose when losing Liquid.

Hi Ambrosia, I am curious about bars and whether they would be worth looking into for myself. Can you please give more of a description of why the liquid caused problems for you and why the bar was an improvement? I really appreciate your perspective on this. Also, I’ve recently seen powdered shampoo and it looks interesting, too.

The rope twist one was serious. I used to rope twist my hair thinking that it would maker my hair neat while still acting as a "protective style" but at the end of the day it made me lose more hair. It was not worth it at all.

So just to be clear, do mean instead a regular two-strand twist (not meaning twine and twist) in many sections is not good for your hair? And best to do a loose "doo-doo" style twist and keep the roots loose as well? I wasn't exactly clear at the end when you mentioned it.
@demi53782 жыл бұрын
Twine & twirl not good.

Torsion is like trying to undo a dreadlock and a combined 2-strand twist. I suppose that would be damaging.
@joypenniless68532 жыл бұрын
hhmmmmm - rope twist. I didn't know they had a name - I just twist my hair and go. The ah-ha is that I do twist my hair as I'm twisting - not as a style, but as a "this is how I twist" From your explanation of torsion, I can see how this would damage my extremely fine hair. This could also explain the random breakage I have. Always a surprise to me because I don't do much to my hair. I will have to really re-think my go-to style because I don't wear my hair out much, I don't pull it into ponytails much, and I don't braid it much - all because I see the damage that these styles cause.

I never steamed my hair. I didn’t buy into that trend because I know steam burns. That caused me to believe that such intense heat could possibly cause heat damage. I don’t know if steaming is actually effective in facilitating moisture absorption more than does simply wetting the hair. Either way, in my experience, too much water probably does more harm than good. I put oil on my hair at least 4-5 times a week, but water only once a week. ❤️
