Yes and the thing too is there are multiple avenues we all can take to get to the same result. That's all this is. There is no absolute in this. What I have learned to do is watch/skim many videos over some time. Pull out the common denominator they are all saying that grew their hair. Techniques, products, tools, etc. And then once you get the common things to use then you have to fill in what products to use. Trial and error will have to occur, that's just how it goes, but once you find things that work then stick to it. Always remember it so that even if you try something else for a while you know for sure what works for you to fall back on.

Personally i always find my hair did not thrive with heavy creams and butters. Id twist my hair and application would feel so good. But once my hair dried, it would have me questioning where is the moisture. What this hair detox showed me was the importance of properly cleaning my hair. I no longer apply oils to my hair and my hair does not miss it. Hair mousse works alot better than creams for me. I think i was confusing "moisture" with a film/coating from those heavy oils and butters

This keeps coming up over and over in the hair community and I don't understand why. We don't need to completely go without oils and butters. We just need to thoroughly clean our hair of the product that we're putting on it on a regular basis. I don't know who's been telling the kids that oil is a moisturizer. It has only ever been used as a protective layer to keep your hair safe from air pollution, dirt and chemicals, and sun damage. Thas it! The rest of this stuff feels like marketing and a new topic for the videos.

Best video on the subject! It's the science for me. The most science the 'oil-is-bad-for-hair' crew/cult can muster, is that 'oil and water don't mix', which doesn't disprove the beneficial effect of oil on hair. That's all I've seen them regurgitate when challenged. Meanwhile you and plenty of others have fabulously long healthy hair and use oils. If oil was so bad, why do our own scalps produce sebum, which a natural oil?

There is enough oil/butter in the formulation of the products that I use I don't need any additional oil or butter. So for me, this isn't a trend or new it's just how I care for my hair. Keep in mind that the type of oils used in these studies matters. The only oil that they see actual noteworthy improvement in hair was coconut oil. Butters, olive oil, mineral oil etc was not beneficial for the hair besides providing lubrication when combing which conditioner can do already. Also conditioner reduces static and is actually attracted to the weakest part of hair strands because conditioner is positively charged and our weak areas are negatively charged so the positive charge properties of the conditioner binds to the negatively charged weak areas of our hair. And it also said in one of the studies that you linked that raw butters actually increased friction, causing hair breakage. I’ve looked at a lot of articles over the years and coconut oil is the only oil backed by science to be used as a noteworthy pre shampoo treatment to prevent hygral fatigue. But keep in mind that the studies are biased towards groups who wash their hair a lot more frequently (everyday or every other day) who actually have to be concerned with hygral fatigue. Compared to the hair washing frequency a typical kinky/curly natural head of hair would (once every 5-7 days a week or longer). {Source detailing the purpose of hair products: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4458934/ }

@@LifeFilmz Hey - thanks for your detailed reply. Using oils & butters may not work for everyone due to likes (&dislikes), lifestyle etc. That said, please allow me to address your observations: 1) While it does not penetrate, mineral oil reduces combing forces (the work needed to detangle the hair) and split end formation, and increases shine (Fregonoesi et al, 2009). And yes, conditioners can do this already by the mechanism you've astutely described. There are a few factors we ought to consider further, however. a) People who actually have a preference for DIY conditioning or those who might not have easy access to products they would otherwise use. b) The continuum of binding affinity exhibited by conditioners. Typically, ingredients in a conditioner work in one of two ways: they either bind to your hair based on charge differences OR they bind based on hydrophobicity. In some cases, someone may want more conditioning than they would naturally get from a generic conditioner. Adding an oil to the hair can enhance the binding affinity of certain surfactants, with behentrimonium being a common one, to the hair. For this reason, those wanting to enhance their conditioning without constantly seeking out a better product, may find the answer lies in simply adding an oil during their conditioning step. For those who tend not to notice much of a lasting effect from conditioners, adding oil can enhance their experience. 2) You're right about butters actually increasing combing forces. This holds true not only for butters, but for any oils that require lots of effort to spread on the hair. I address this in detail in my workshop. However, butters have other benefits, such as allowing for superior stretch (anecdotal experience). They also protect the hair from absorbing too much water. 3) The ability of coconut oil to protect the hair has been ascribed to its high content of shorter chained saturated fatty acids which are able to penetrate. There are other oils with similar compositions, which, while not displayed through research, are likely to behave similarly. Ucuuba butter is one that researchers speculate also penetrates. There are others. 4) There are benefits to having oils remain on the outside of the hair: slower moisture loss, increased lubricity, increased shine, softness. Oils don't have to penetrate to provide value. 5) While those with afro hair do not tend to engage in daily washing, there are some other factors to consider when drawing comparisons concerning how cleansing affects the hair. The grooming forces of Afro hair are higher than for straight hair. Bearing this in mind, the hair is likely subjected to more weathering during and after washing simply by virtue of its shape. In addition, the coils and kinks in the structure represent weak points where stresses can accumulate. Moreover, in areas where there are kinks and bends along the hair fibre, imaging has shown that there can be slight lifting of the cuticle, even under "dry" conditions. For these reasons, even with a lower washing frequency, hygral fatigue and the increased vulnerability of swollen cuticle scales could well be more of a factor. Of course this is a generalisation, and your sweet spot is unlikely to be exactly the same as someone else's, even if you have seemingly similar hair. 6) The degree of oil penetration is correlated to fatty acid chain length. Different oils penetrate to different degrees. Those that penetrate leave less of a film on the hair surface. Depending on your needs, you may or may not want penetration in an oil. Some resources: Brazilian oils and butters: the effect of different fatty acid chain composition on human hair physiochemical properties. Fregonesi A, Scanavez C, Santos L, De Oliveira A, Roesler R, Escudeiro C, Moncayo P, De Sanctis D, Gesztesi JL. J Cosmet Sci. 2009 Mar-Apr; 60(2):273-8 Hornby, S. @@NaturallyHigh hi, my point wasn’t that they don’t provide lubrication. The paper states that it does. My point of my reply is that oils don’t do anything special or outside of what your normal conditioner can do already plus more such as reduces static which oils can’t do alone.

the points you made about the benefits of oils are true. but all the hair products we use already have oils in them. what they're saying is "they stopped using EXTRA oils in their hair." coz too much of a good thing can be bad. I don't think anyone is claiming oils will damage the hair though, or stop it growing. it's just that your hair may benefit from less oil usage. like, become more manageable. easy to detangle and so on.

Love this video, we need more scientific research in the natural hair community, especially on type 4 hair!! Most of the research is only done on curly to straight caucasian hair. 😍 I love coconut oil and have never stopped using it. Just like shea butter. It’s what my ancestors have used for centuries. I think everyone has to find it’s middle way and do what works. I have stopped using oils and butters on a regular basis for many years and rarely do a style were I seal my hair. But would use them for diy rinse out masks and it works great. When products have already a significant amount of different oils and butters, I don’t see the need to apply more. Because often, even with coconut or jojoba oil, my hair doesn’t absorb it. And I don’t like the oily films on the hair while running the fingers through the strands. So I always make sure to read the labels and decide if I need ab additional sealant. ☺️

Thank you for this video! I love it! This video, in my opinion, is what has been missing from this whole conversation. Your 2nd point (which you backed up with scientific research study DATA), is one reason the no raw oils, no raw butters movement has irritated me: My hair gets VERY wet and also retains water . . . even if I use oil or an oil-laden hair product 🤷. I just don't understand why all of a sudden there must be just one way to have healthy hair -- the no raw oils, no raw butters way. I just don't believe that every person on the planet who uses raw oil in their hair regimen automatically has unhealthy hair. I'm glad regimens are getting quicker, but I wish people would not pretend there is only one way to have healthy hair.

Very very interesting once again! I love your in depth videos backed by scientific articles! 💕😇! I quit oils and butters for a while, my wash and go’s looked beautiful and less dry, but the hair broke a lot when I detangled! I went back to using coconut oil and Conditioner for detangling, as advised by you, and my hair stopped breaking so much.😭😭💕 . When I use conditioner on it’s own when detangling, the hair breaks more! It’s trueeeee Quitting oils and butter taught me that I have to cleanse my hair more toroughly and that I don’t have to layer so many products to moisturize my hair. I feel like I really got to know my hair better! The mosquito part tho😭🤣🤣 I laughed hahahah! Edit: the BGLH link in the description box! The nostalgia😍

I recently made the mistake of using a clarify shampoo on my fine strands and it's taking me weeks for my hair to recover. I really believe it the lack of oil that ruined my hair. Using that shampoo was a major set back. That's why I used black soap as a shampoo instead because it cleans without stripping the oils from my hair. My hair is rough and frizzy, I see an improvements when I use oils.

Respectfully, it is likely that you are maybe unused to seeing how the actual surface texture of your hair feels once completely cleansed. I understand that-it shocked me. It’s recommended to follow up clarifying shampoos with moisturizing shampoos to balance the pH, which reminds me of another thing-be cautious with the Black soap. It’s not pH balanced, so it’s really not ideal to use as shampoo. (I am not a stylist, but a beginning cosmetology student and this is information that other licensed cosmetologists have shared on other platforms.)

@@hibiscustea6886 I've been natural for 10 year and have a very good handle on what works on my hair. I recently decided to stop using black soap although I had experienced no issues using it for weakly washes. I was experiencing itchy scalp so decided to get Giovanni triple shampoo as I had used it before but back then my hair was thicker and I washed as and when. Sometimes 2 months would go by with me just cowashing occasionally. I started the weekly washed roughly three months ago and had tried castile soap once but it didn't feel like it washed off the oils. I thought the oils in my hair where causing the itching. I will admit after the clarifying shampoo my scalp didn't itch however my hair was in a bad way. I followed through with a conditioner but my hair tangled up and felt weak. I will also add my hair texture changed a few years ago and is now very fine( I blame pregnancy 8 years ago my hair never recovered) I agree that I need to look into better products, pH balance is something I never considered and I really have never washed off all the oils in my hair. I am looking into a more expensive shampoo by Christophe Robin but I'm scared I will spend all that money and use it once. I am now water only washing and using jojoba, mango butter and caster oil. As well as keeping my hair up. I have seen an improvement. I will try coconut oil and tentatively look for a better shampoo, I don't want to rush and buy without have the same problem. My goal is to get the sebum on my hair before using any kind of shampoo.

So I believe you have to do what works for your hair and scalp. My scalp doesn't do well with oils especially with fragrance, possibly due to too much sebum production. So besides washing and deep conditioning my hair is moisturized with a leave in, and a gel that has protein in it. It's been going pretty good so far it's been 2 years.

@@NaturallyHigh Hi there! I have found oil to be the best way to protect my hair before shampooing-I’ve never really been able to move away from coconut oil for long. Like you, I don’t use it for styling. My hair tends to feel dry and needs a regular spray of water or high water content product and Shea butter (with other oils blended in - castor oil, vitamin E oil and almond oil) just helps to seal that moisture in and helps smooth my hair for twisting. Spraying my hair with a product with a high water content if not water is the best thing I’ve done for my hair lately. Oil doesn’t moisturize and neither does Shea butter which I learned the hard way. I use castor oil (I prefer the processed, light coloured stuff). I know, there is JBCO but that one makes my natural silver highlights look discolored... The castor oil is heavy enough to help seal the ends while twisting. Re the detoxing. I do worry about build up and correct me if I’m wrong, the post did mention that it takes a while for the oils to dissipate to where you are left with sebum? I do use a clarifying type shampoo at the moment; it’s Giovanni Tea Tree tingle but I feel that that does not remove everything which in general is a good thing. However, I like the idea of a clean slate once in a while. I wonder how my hair will behave. Sorry about the long response for what is for me a very short routine. It’s just about using the right products in the right way for our individual strands and how we like our hair to feel and look. I’ve always loved how your hair looks-the fullness most of all. Looking forward to learning from your future content. 😄

I have really been looking forward to this video and it didn’t disappoint! I don’t really use that much oil in my hair and butters can be just too much. I tended to use at prepoo and for scalp massages. There tends to be oils in quite a few products anyway. I kind of dabbled with the detox hence switching things up a bit and yes, my hair feels different but I like both ways. What is great is the focus on cleansing and simplifying one’s routine. I still p,an to sign up though as would be interesting to look at the resources and rationale in greater depth. I think the problem with oils is the Way we use them. The products used even in the 30 day detox contain oils and butters all of them! However they are in formulations that do not cause the problems caused by improper use. Washing weekly to bi weekly also prevents build up. Any kind of buildupwill act as an occlusive and lead to dry hair over time.

That’s so interesting. I have noticed my hair is stronger & healthier now after I stopped using all those heavy creams & butters. I use coconut oil with essential oils exclusively after shampooing. After I let my hair freeform loc, I got rid of a majority of my hair products. My seborrheic dermatitis also got worse, so that was prt of the reason. Now, I wash twice with diluted Dr. Bronner’s tea tree castille soap (1:5 ratio of water:castille soap) two to three times a week, and every other hair wash I use T/Sal seborrheic dermatitis shampoo. Out the shower, I put coconut oil with some drops of tea tree & peppermint essential oils in it on my scalp liberally, and I put just coconut oil on my hair, but focus in my ends. My hair’s never been more healthy & strong, despite my scalp doing the most.

To be fair, what they say is don’t use RAW oils and butter on your hair. They encourage use of stylers like foams and gel which also have oils in them. The oils in the foams and gels I guess is formulated specifically for hair so that’s the difference. A lot of products including shampoos and conditioners also contain oil so I do not think anyone is saying don’t use oil, they’re just saying don’t use the kind used to cook on your hair. That makes sense.

Thank you for the informative video. I have a few questions. - The study at 3 min talk about hygral fatigue as a cause of hair damage. I remember reading an article written by a woman who wanted to get the scientific facts about this phenomenon. She only found a few articles on it and they actually studied wool, not hair. The studies were about clothes being cleaned in washing machines, not hair being shampooed. Also, the swelling caused by hygral fatigue was reversible and not permanent damage. Do you know any studies about hygral fatigue made on hair ? - The studies you cite use coconut oil and/or mineral oil. What about the other vegetable oils and butters ? Coconut oil having specific characteristics, I wouldn't want to make generalizations.

To be clear the creators of the no oils end Butters movement never said that boils weren't a lubricant for the hair. What they've said is that oils are not moisturizing to the hair. And as a means for retaining moisture there is no actual way to retain moisture in the hair the only place we find moisture is in water and water naturally evaporates thus the prospect of using oils to lock in moisture is useless. With this knowledge you can deduce that oils are negligible in a hair routine. I did the hair detox almost three years ago, my hair has never been more manageable, easily able to be detangled, I've never saved this much money on hair products, I have also never retained this much length ( for reference my hair is always been kind of long but now my hair actually goes way past my shoulders. When I'm detangling my hair in the shower my hair is under my boob) I also don't take as much time for washes because I wash every 4-5 days. My hair is very soft and I get complimented on my hair all the time I get people asking me what I do with my hair and I told them and they freak out. With the hair detox/ no oils no Butters challenge patience is key and trusting the process is key because when I first started my hair look crazy but after a couple washes to get all of the build-up from the oils and butters off of my hair (when I used oils I washed every 7 days) my hair flourished!

This explanation helps tremendously and gives a better understanding on why some love the NONB and others do not. I do believe my hiar is prone to being weak and tangles like it is nobody's business. Therefore I am hesitant to give up using oils and butters. I do have another topic I am wondering if you can help with and that is the use of clay on the hair?? On one side I hear longterm or over use causes damage and the other side says regular use of clay softens the hair and helps retain length. Lately I've found clay make my wash day so much better but I am concerned about longterm use.
