I had to switch locticians because the one who started my locs didn’t want to shampoo my hair. I have seborrheic dermatitis and she sent me home with flakes twisted into my locs. I’m now 15 weeks into my journey and my scalp is healthy because my new loctician actually gets in there to cleanse my scalp.

This video is very helpful and important! A hairstylist started my locs and also told me not to wash my hair for about 3 months to help it loc' up. Then I had to go to another person and I found her by faith. She put me in check, she said you need to wash your hair hahahahhaha. I'm still with her till this day. She is actually a great loctician and this video proves it.

I stopped doing locs because of how awful the market has become. I can no longer deal with people who are misinformed about the proper process. You spend so much time retraining the thinking of the abused clients than doing the hair service.

Yeah. I know. I was one of those clients who received misinformation for YEARS through about 5 or 6 sets of locs. I just had to educate myself. I probably could have had locs down to my feet by now (not that I'd ever grow them that long) had I not had to cut my locs off so many times and start over due to the miseducation and greediness of stylists I've patronized over the last 16yrs.

I've been maintaining them myself for the past 7 months and I'll go back to her during the Xmas holidays. She is awesome. She is about the health of locs, and educating clients about locs. Her locs are 15 yrs old and she is an awesome representation of her business as well as her clients. No walk ins. Consultations are a must. Great video!

I just started my locs 2 days ago and the young lady who did them said she's been doing locs for 10+ years. I followed her Instagram and her work looked good. When I went to get mines done she used some type of blue gel for my coils and continuously sprayed my hair with this super holding spray. My coils feel extremely hard and I can even see the build up already happening from whatever gel and spray she used. There are little white flakes starting too. I'm really sad about this but most likely I will have to wash my hair and start over again because I'm not satisfied at all and I want to start off right.

Naylan Wow, I am SO sorry that this happened to you! There are people who have years of "experience" on their resume, but aren't qualified. Unfortunately some people have been messing up people's heads for years. I've seen individuals with decades of buildup in their locs. I'm so glad you are informed and won't be going back. Give your hair a deep wash and cleanse and start over the right way😊.

This info is great! I have Sisterlocks and I started with a trainee. I was her second client and although I did see her first client's hair journey while with her, I personally decided to maintain my own locs plus I stopped using the Sisterlocks products on my hair for several reasons. 1) My trainee takes a long time. It took her 62 hours to establish my locs and 15 hours to retighten them. I started braidlocs on my daughter and maintain them with interlocking so I figured if it took that long, I can do them myself and follow up 2x a year with another consultant to make sure everything is going smoothly. 2) My trainee has traditional locs and were trying to use methods like backcoming and twisting the ones that she couldn't interlock during the maintanence as my hair is frizzy and she wants my ends to seal up (I love my frizzy ends and told her I don't mind my ends as it gives my locs body and fullness...which I like) she insisted that backcoming Sisterlocks will a method she wants to use on all of her clients during maintanence. Although there is talk about backcoming during the establishment that I've seen during my research...there wasn't anything referring to that as a maintanence method. Actually, I only saw one other person mentioning their consultant doing that and the responses where saying she should look for someone else as that's not something that's typically done. 3) Although she probably never seen the ingredients in some of the Sisterlocks products, one particular shampoo I used (the dandruff shampoo that she recommended me to purchase) has Beeswax in it. Once I mentioned it was in there, she said "Well they made Beeswax for a reason so it's good for something". The reason I looked at the list waa because after using it, my scalp felt like it was on fire so I wanted to see what was in there. I simply trusted it because it was a "Sisterlocks product" but it had several ingredients I heard shouldn't be used in locs. Plus, before doing braidlocks on my daughter's head, I once started hers with Beeswax and not only was it sticky, it made her head itch. 4) During the 15 hour retightening, my trainee was more concerned about ensuring every loc ended on the same rotation, but failed to understand that was hurting my head. After she was done some of my locs felt like it does after getting fresh braids to the point i had to just put my hair under water. I ended up with a scab in the front so I know to stop before it gets tight when I do them. I just figured it will be best to maintain my hair and continue to maintain my daughter's hair. I rather that we have healthy hair than it falling out. Not saying every loctition is bad, but I don't want to have to keep running from person to person to maintain our heads. Plus, it's good to know how to do your own hair every now and then.

My locs were started w/ gel && that’s the only time she’s ever used it. She told me that she used the gel to “set them” and she’d never use it again && she hasn’t. She uses oil to retwist my hair now, so I don’t totally agree w/ number 1, but everything else I completely agree w/. Great video. 👍🏾

Great tips! There is so much misinformation out there on how to maintain locs even within the black hair community. I constantly have people ask if I can wash my hair and who have no clue what the difference between manicured locs and semi free form or free form locs are. I tell them most locs are probably cleaner than their hair and they cant believe it lol.

I’m so tired of rude loctitians! That’s all I’ve been meeting and I really want to start my loc journey. They either want to charge a high price, had bad work, and weren’t willing to share with me information about the process before I come in, and someone told me my hair is too long to start my locs with comb coils and it’s about the length your hair was when you started with your first set. I’m so discouraged. I live in Michigan and it’s hard finding someone here that can do good locs and have good service. I really don’t want to start with two strands but I’ll start them myself if I have to

I had a stylist use some type of custard like stuff on my locs. It only held my hair for 1 hour. The next time I went to her I told her I can only use water base products in my hair to hold the twist. She gave me some BS excuse about why she dont use it. Plus she kept turning all the hair care products she was using around so you couldn't see the brand and or the stuff she is using. Needless to say I don't go to her no more.

Trouble is, you'll not know until you've been going a good while and some hairdressers dislike being asked the name and ingredients of products they're about to slap on YOUR head. My most recent appointment was last week. The whole thing took above 4 hours, door to door and I ended up unpinning the updo the same evening. I usually only have a wash and relock. This time I also had a ''detox'' which is basically bicarbonate of soda on my scalp for 25-30 mins. I'd been told the cost would be double the normal bill. However for some unknown reason, I was charged double plus an extra ten. I didn't quibble. My change was handed to me in small notes, I think the owner was expecting the usual tip but I stuffed it in my wallet really fast. Oh and the hair looked no better for having had a detox. In fact, the lint showed up even more. The only positive thing is the actual relock.

Thankfully I have 4C hair, I washed my hair every Monday and Friday from the start and still do to this day during the Florida summer months and once per week during the winter and I retwist once or twice a month. I just separate my hair after each wash to maintain my parts. Their is no way I would go without washing my hair to maintain a hair style. For me personally that would be unacceptable. Washing my hair frequently encourages tangles which results in my locks reaching maturity sooner. P.S. your locks are lovely

I have been growing my locs for 11 years and I love them. Through my journey I have not found a loctician that cared about the health of my locs. So I have use atleast 7 or 8 and I haven't found the right loctician!! This past year I started with this new person and now 12 months later I noticed my hair was looking thinner. I really didn't know for sure so when I went for my maintenance before my loctician started on my hair I told her I think my hair is thinning. She ask where and I pointed to the top of my head. I really was not sure all I know my hair looked thinner. She never said a word about it she shampoo and latched like normal. Two days later I notice a lot of my locs were as thin as three pieces of thread. I'm devastated!! My beautiful locs of 11 years are ruined. How did she not see it??? It was so gradual I didn't even see it happening until it was to late. Can I sue her for neglect?

If your starter locs are "instant locked" then you can wash em after 2 weeks. If they're "coils or 2strand twists" then i would not recommend you wash em after 2 weeks, you'll end up back in a fro and the money you spent will all be just a waste. (Coming from someone who has had long dreads 3 times and currently has dreads now. Speaking from Experience)

I'm three months in to my locks. I've haven't washed it yet but I've been spraying my hair with rose water and tea tree oil. I'm in the budding stage and I'm nevous on how often I should re-twist my hair. I don't really mind the frizz because I don't like for my scalp to show and I want thicker locs like yours. My hair stylist told me that I have very thick hair and she says that thinning won't be an issue with me so she tells me to come in every two weeks but I've been pushing it to once a month. I'm just kind of mixed up on which direction I should go. Do you have any helpful tips? I could send you a few pictures of my hair if that's helpful?
@NaturalNirvana
@NaturalNirvana 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Jerelle! 😊 Congratulations on your new loc journey! May I ask, why you haven’t washed your hair in three months? Was this recommended to you by your stylist? If so, that and the two week retwist recommendation are very alarming to me. My advice would be to wash your hair. Keeping your scalp and Locs cleaned are vital to a healthy hair/ loc journey. It doesn’t need to be excessive. You can find out what works for you. Maybe start out once a month, and a retwist once a month while you are still in the beginning stages. You may also like water rinses in between washes. Retwisting every two weeks may lead to your hair thinning over time. There is not enough new growth in two weeks for your hair to have to be retwisted. I have many videos that I hope can help you on your journey, and I will be putting up more content soon. Please let me know if you have any video request 😊. I hope this was helpful. ❤️

She tried to convince me it was normal. And to wear a thick headband of I was uncomfortable. Wasted time and money. And she was a licensed cosmetologist. I was like... dang

New to the channel & you're hair is gorgeous💕I luv my loc technician she specializes in natural hair. I started going to her in Aug just getting natural styles with updo protective styles. From Aug to now I have a great length. She cut all the perm hair out. She told me to come to her every 4 weeks until she says otherwise & then she gonna show me how to maintain them myself. I started my locs Jan 2 2019.

Just started my locks, the Loctician charged me $200 (for half a head, hair less than 4 inches). They used this “lock n” edge gel with extra hold. I tried to research this product. I was expecting moist coils. Mines were hard and dry-ish. They then barreled my little stringy locks and used thread to sew it down. I’m not sure how I feel. My parts are not even/consistently the same. I keep telling myself to trust the process with this being my 3rd set.

Carvin Fletcher Hey, congratulations on your loc journey. I'm sorry to hear about the wax. You definitely don't want to use wax, as it will cause build up. To better answer your question, are you stating that you've only had your locs for 3 days?

The only one I relate to is the every two weeks thing. She doesn’t always have me come in every two weeks sometimes she wants three or a month but usually I’m the on that wants to come in earlier because my hair is a straight curly type do to me being a mixed person. But she seems trust worthy, no products put in my hair or photos being taken, we both agreed we want my love to come in as natural as possible. She even rejected my crochet hook proposal because she said it damages hair, but idk I do kind of get a weird feeling about her. One time she said to me thanks for being my lab rat because she was trying something new when it comes to locking up, she also said I was three weeks ahead the second time I came in. My locs are coming out pretty good but sometimes I wonder if she is saying it’s all going to plan just to keep me coming back. The lowest I’ve paid so far is $20 because I came in and all she did was put a few back in that came out which was about 20+.

I go to a hairdresser who thinks she is going to start my locs but I am having second thoughts. I asked her what she plans on locing my hair with she couldn't tell me. She said she makes her own products. Everytime I ask her about my hair she never gives a clear answer. I seen her retwist but never start them which makes me very nervous. She did mention to palm rolling which is fine but she's gets frustrated. She showed me pictures of her daughter hair but it wasn't neat. Anyways I am currently growing out my perm once that is done I'm gone.

Okay, my current loctitian is certified and this last appt he didn’t seem to have the same enthusiasm as the first two times. However my last retwist he suggested I return this month for a wash so he could properly separate my roots. I sensed his impatience. I separated as much as I could but apparently not good enough. I did notice I have a few Locs that are a little thinner than I’d like at the base. I’ve been getting retwist only every 2-3 months. My last retwist was December 17th and I have an appt for March 17. By chance do you have a tutorial for separating roots? I kind of feel like my loctitian is a wolf in sheep’s clothing and semi freeforming is looking good right now.

Don't wash for 5 months! Dirty hair locks faster!? No no no... After I had my hair backcombed my friend who did it who also has dreads made sure I knew about buildup, staying away from certain ingredients, and let me know I could wash after about two weeks, which I did. I'm a bit like you, I had maintenance with a crochet hook done one time... Then I got invited to join a natural dreadlocks group on Facebook and learned a lot. Haven't had maintenance done since... I have Caucasian straight hair, so yeah... I have loose hairs on top and it's full of bumps and zig zags but you know what? I like that more natural look. Looking back, if I had known more I would have used the wash and go/neglect/semi freeform method. I say semi freeform because I would be seperating sections and whatnot to give it a neater look, to me freeform you only wash and let them do all their own thing. The majority of people I come across love my hair, but I did have one guy ask me before what was going on up there, that I needed a re-twist. I explained to him what I was going for and that I never had them twisted to begin with, they were backcombed lol. He understood. I see this one guy around from time to time with these epic freeform dreads. We always talk for a few minutes and joke about how people spend so much money on having their dreads worked on. This other guy I know asked how my roots were so thick and I told him this and that and apparently, his loctitian had him coming in every week for a re-twist... So often that his roots started breaking and he ended up with a small bald spot. Another funny short story is... When I was wanting to get them started, I mentioned something to my sister in law and she said "oh! I could do them for you for free, it ain't nothing but twisting and some beeswax!" Needless to say I paid the 50 dollars to my friend who did her own to do them hahaha!

Hey I love your locs first off ! And secondly I started locing in late may , I washed it once since but they unraveled a lot after washing . Also my loctician doesn't use a over the head dryer after retwisting , she just blow dries it ... is this something that will prevent the locing and cause me to go back quicker or not necessarily?

I love my loc lady but the people i tried before her were crazy. I have a whole horror story from 1 lady and the other jus wanted my money. But ill jus talk abt the money hungry and misinformed lady. I had my locs started by damian walter and he does comb coils and the lady told me id have to comb out my locs after they had ALREADY started budding because she said only two strand twists loc. But of course she was willing to restart my locs for $100 more than what Damian charged 😒 She also told my that my locs were too small and im like you havent even asked me what size i wanted or know the texture of my loose natural hair to make that assessment i left her chair immediately and never came back.
