|about BLACK x SIKH|🖤🤎
an advocacy project dedicated to amplifying the lived experiences of individuals at the intersection of Black and Sikh identities.
we're creating the space we wish existed at the beginning of our journey to Sikhi! Our goal is to increase awareness and help improve intercultural competency as we work to turn our ideals of equity + inclusion into reality.
thanks for sliding through the intersection of culture x faith!

1:25:00 Hell and Heaven are states of consciousness. Hell is when you are separated from Waheguru. Heaven is when you are in union with Waheguru.

sure, that's certainly one way to view heaven + hell, as conceptual, states of existence, in a more abstract sense. i like that more than the christian//abrahamic view of heaven + hell.

nanak shah fakir is brilliant and beautiful. I saw it when it first came out in the cinema and then bought it on itunes. The cinema version showed guru nanak's body, never his face. That, along with other historical inaccuracies, had people protesting here in the UK - people where doing sit downs in cinema foyers! This caused the film to be taken down after only a few weeks in the cinema. It was then re-released later on itunes, where guru nanak was now a floating white light 🙂 thank you friends, for a great podcast🙏

1:17:00 Only the Khalsa are required to keep Kes. This is because the Khalsa embody the Sant-Sipahi or Saint-Soldier. The kes symbolize the saintly aspect, whereas the kanga, kachera, kirpan, and kada symbolize the soldier aspect. I do think making this distinction is important if we want to spread Sikhi. Many potential Sikhs are scared off by the hair requirement.

here's a better question: what's your point? you believe only Khalsa are required to keep kes. OK cool. .....now what? are you suggesting non-Khalsa Sikhs shouldn't? that keeping kes is of no importance to all other Sikhs? more importantly, to address, "if we want to spread Sikhi..." _we_ don't. we don't want to "spread Sikhi." we have a core mission + several goals with this project (BLACKxSIKH) and spreading Sikhi is not one of them. we have no desire to "spread Sikhi" for the purposes of "recruitment" or "saving" non-Sikhs or any other purpose outside of advocacy -- increased awareness to improve the lived experiences of currently practicing, self-identifying Sikhs, specifically Black Sikhs [+ by proxy non-Punjabi + other multiply-marginalized Sikhs]. that's it. that's what this entire livestream is about. to that end, non-Sikhs being "scared off" by a "requirement" to keep kes is, to us, a non-issue. AND if someone is deterred from Sikhi by _that,_ Sikhi is absolutely not for them. if they do a bunch of research + learn as much as they can about Sikhi and "keeping kes" is the thing that stops them from adopting Sikhi as their spiritual guidance//journey or faith practice, they aren't meant to be Sikhs. and that's OK b|c we know that everyone is different + has different needs, including spiritual needs.

Historically the kesh were kept by all devout followers of Guru Nanak Dev ji because when Bhai Mardana asked him how do I follow your path the answer came do not cut your kesh , naam japo (meditate on God'd name) and Kirt karo (earn an honest living.) and vand shako. Those who only follow Guru ji's faith but. sehajdhari are supposed to be those coming from another faith so are slow adapters and once you are fully there then you are given time to get there . once you are ready then one should aim towards joining Guru ji's family by taking amrit/
