U.S. forces are training Somali troops, part of an urgent fight against al-Shabab, a subsidiary of Al Qaeda. This month, NBC News’ Courtney Kube had exclusive access with the U.S. military and spoke with leaders behind the operation. Somali troops face incredible danger in their fight against al-Shabab, with hundreds killed or wounded since last fall. Adding to the threat: a devastating drought and the terror group’s use of retaliation tactics.

I did time with a Somalian brother in Indiana state prison. That man was well respected in the prison. Even the guards respected him. He conducted himself well. I’m glad to call him my brother. I still communicate with him. I was released early in the pandemic.

I think it's incredibly sad to see that so many western nations who could easily support Somalia like the US does simply don't care. Proper combined arms NATO training, anti-terror training and modern equipment for the soldiers who fight there so hard should be a minimum expectancy we here in Europe or America should have towards our governments. But still, the Somalis keep on fighting even in these adverse conditions and I truly hope that they will succeed and support by other nations for them won't dwindle but grow. I can only guess how sick the Somalis really must be of decades of dictatorships, terrorism and civil wars. Hope I can myself find a way to support those who want to rebuild a free and prospering country and achieve unity within their people.

As a Somali who's done a lot of research about the conflict, there's really a ton of issues. At the end we see some AU figure stating that the local militias must be integrated into the SNAF. However, we tried and fail to do this 8 years ago. Following the capture of Kismaayo, AU and the SNAF tried integrating local fighters of the Lower Jubba region into Division 43 (SNA area of command for southern Somalia). However, 500 fighters dropped out of the integration process. The division had been established in 2013, but had no troops until 2015, so the money meant for over 3,000 troops was sent out and pocketed by commanders and other bureaucrats. The arms embargo doesn't help. Besides US air support, which is really only reserved for the Danab commandos seen here, the rest of the army is basically on par with al-Shabaab besides a few MRAPs and other vehicles. Heavy weapons and combined arms is a _must_ in COIN, and how conventional forces are so effective. But there's no air force, artillery, armor.

Where does the Eritrean trained army fit, in this big picture?
@Norkeys
@Norkeys Жыл бұрын
@T T Higher up on the totem pole than regular infantry, but still below priority when compared to Danab and Gorgor (US and Turkish trained SOF, respectively) but their strength comes in above average training with a large force concentration.5000 were trained in Eritrea. 5000 troops is 20% of the current army, compared to the more sporadic and anemic groupings of the army, they bring competency with sheer size. Still, we have to wait and see their combat capabilities first hand, or if they'll be relegated to security and rear echelon work concerning stability or other political issues. The army is made loyal to the federal government, and there's been many a time federal forces clash with state troops (e.g beled-hawo between Jubaland Darawiish troops and Division 43, federal). A loyal force gives the government mandate to step in on the states, so we'll see how they're really used. Still, regardless a good move

@@Norkeys thank you for taking the time to respond and for your knowledge. I am Eritrean and I am glad to hear directly from your view, and many things said about them and including their disappearance and how they involved in Ethiopia war which turned out to be all false. Speaking on what I know. Eritrean army are trained not on a technical war machine or strategy etc, but developing sheer will power and decipiline and physical and mental confidence to believe that anything is possible. Basically the learn that they need to commit themselves to the wellbeing of their nation, where they made to understand personal gain is not the purpose of any actions. They made to live side by side with all Eritrean ethnicity and religion (Eritrea has 9 different languages, 2 major religions, and many different divisions, culture) but they go there to finish their final year of highschool, and do the military training (at least a year and half) and do their national service after words where they are spread all over the country. Even in earlier years 7 - 9 they go on school arranged summer camp to do some work (mostly physical work) farming related but mostly learn about history of the struggle and visit places of history and tour the country. They develop deep sense of nationalism and belonging and knowing each other. The Eritrean leaders believe, our small numbers (compared to Ethiopia) and our difference was used to manipulate us and made us to submit to others (foreign powers, Ethiopia, Egypt, Turkey, Italy, Great Britain and America) , back to back for the past 500 years. That’s why Eritrea main focus is on self reliance for everything, specifically food and security. Our land and sea is desired by everyone, specially the foreign powers and we have to be in total control of our destiny. The US and former Ethiopia leaders, did everything possible to break us and disintegrate the country but the government, kicked everyone out and lock itself to build its own resources and in the process put aside all freedom, both political and economic development. After seeing the crisis that’s unfolding in Ethiopia, after so much economic growth that people spoke about, I think it’s a time bind that will explode if not managed carefully. Eritrea has vested interest to keep Ethiopia, Somalia, Sudan and others safe in order to safeguard its future but with the west, Arab, Turkey, China and other interests, it’s very difficult. I honestly don’t know the real reason for the al-Shebab existence in the first place? Who is behind these group and who arms them and what exactly they wanted to terrorize their own people? As an Eritrean, who are totally brainwashed and believe of the entity Eritrea, I am not able to understand. The same a Jew will never want to do harm to his country and people at the service of others (at least that’s what I think). Eritrea has very huge challenges, specially with Eritreans who are mixed with Ethiopian (specially with Tigray) and hard to depict their loyalty. The government policy and actions are good and clear, and give everyone a benefit of doubt that everyone is loyal to Eritrea and paid equally and thus has equal opportunity. But former Ethiopian government (made up of Tigray, a history enemy for houndeds of years) were using and targeting those Eritreans to breakup the bind using ethnicity and religion ( same ethnicity time bomb they planted in Ethiopia is what creating the endless conflict in the country) but they failed because of sheer willpower of the Eritrean leaders. I wanted to share this history so that you see the view from Eritrean point of view. The Eritrean government can run elections and with popularity, control and influence they can win year in and out. That may have released them from some stress from the media and western powers but they think they will lose the opportunity to shape their country and society as they wanted. Most people given a choice, they prefer their personal interests first over the collective. But they think Eritrean are not / could not be left alone to make their own free choice and will, but others with power and money will choose for them by their influence so WHY bother in the first place creating a gap to be exploited. This may sound very simplistic but it’s the only way. Eritrea and Eritreans believe, Eritrea is unfinished business for any Ethiopian, at any time at any day they can switch their mind and sell you out for a higher price. Locality means absolutely nothing where in Eritrea it’s everything. So I hope if anything those Eritrean trained Somali developed deep sense of loyalty to their country and their people. I don’t know given the US and Eritrea tensions created primarily by the influence of former Ethiopian government, and US interests in the region, i don’t know how the Somali government is able to find balance. As of right now, many Americans senators under the influence of the Ethiopian lobbyists are trying to damage Eritrea including some senator asking the US to deploy at the sea and block all Eritrean economic activities because sanctions do not work on Eritrea. And Eritrea support with Russia in the conflict is not seating well with the US but Eritrea needs to arms and protection from what ever comes a threat from Tigray. I wish the best for Somalia and the region, but unless all of us come together and believe in our own ability to protect our interests and ability, it will be difficult for others to leave us alone. I am surprised 5000 Eritreans trained army make up 20% of the army. It makes me wonder what have the US and others have been training all these years? Eritrea trains 25,000 young men and women every year and that’s the whole Somali army. Eritrea has been doing these for the last 20 plus years… even if 50% is no longer in service (say all women start family etc) and 50% of the males leave the county, better opportunities etc) that leaves over 100,000 army and with possibly reserve of 200,000 thousand.

@@TT-rk4uy Thank you for your insight. Eritrea is in a precarious situation with involvement of so many powers and your own relationship with Ethiopia ofc. And yes, the individual over the collective is so present, so I hope that as well. al-Shabaab was established on the cusp of the Ethiopian invasion in late 2006. They basically were the more extreme version of the Islamic Courts Union which controlled the majority of Somalia at the time, and following the defeat of the ICU, many joined al-Shabaab instead. They also have a vast amount of foreign fighters, usually found in their contacts in al-Qaeda. They really want control, as one US brigadier general says in the video, specializing a lot in extortion. I've known of a few cases from this, from extorting house builders to blowing up stores due to refusal of protection money. and yes, the federal army is quite small, we really don't have many people willing to fight, not to mention all the payment issues and corruption present. The US basically put all their eggs into the basket of the Danab battalion, and it seems to have worked well. But the 25,000 is only counting the federal army, there's probably another maybe 10-15,000 in local state troops, militia groups, etc.
