My Grandfather served with them in both World Wars. I will always remember his face when as a little boy I laughed at The Sikh toy soldiers "silly hats". A short while later I realized how special The Sikhs were to The British Empire and what magnificent Soldiers they made. My Gramps didn't get serious often but in regards to the respect deserved for Sikh Soldier his seriousness will live with me forever.

Well you forgot the Gurkhas and over 200 years of service. There’s a reason why there’s no Sikh regiment in the British army but many Gurkha battalions. You can just google this or go to the Uk and visit any military town. You will see Nepalese people all over the place and many in the army barracks.

After serving in the first world war the British rewarded the innocent Sikhs with the massacre in jallianwala bagh and after serving in the second world war Sikhs were killed by being tied to cannons and the cannon being shot through their chests. They were EXPLOITED BY THE BRITISH and were told to crawl on the ground on all fours but when the Sikhs peacefully protested they were brutally and mercilessly killed. The British DID NOTHING for the countless sacrifices of the Sikhs.

Considering Sikhs was a population of just 2% during the British Raj In WW1 and WW2 they made up more than 25% of the British Indian Army. There were more Sikhs than the Welsh and Scottish put together and I can proudly say my grandad served for the British Indian Army and yes he was a Sikh !.

Canada just had a former Sikh Lt. Col of the British Columbia Regiment elected and appointed as the Minister of Defense. Harjit Sijjan is a highly decorated soldier with 1 tour of Bosnia and 3 of Afghanistan. He has been wounded 3 times, once in Bosnia and teice in Afghanistan He also spent 11 years as a Vancouver City Policeman serving on the Gang Squad. There are KZbin videos of interviews with him while he was serving in the Canadian Military. Canada has 4 Sikhs as Ministers in the Parliament elected on the 19th of October, India had 2 Sikh Ministers in their government.

They really should have carried out the idea to raise a Sikh regiment, it would have preserved uniformity within regiments as well as allowing Sikhs to serve and keep their turbans and beards.

Turbans makes it impossible to wear any helmet. Highly impractical in a combat situation for a infantryman, a tank crew member, a pilot (fixed winged or rotating winged plane). That's why Indians of the sikh faith serving in the armed forces usually do so in the Navy. And the beard is a true hassle for personal hygiene, when safe water isn't available for this use. So yes, turbans and bushy beards can be a problem. Not to mention the impossibility to wear gasmasks, if needed.

Jack Murphy which is fair enough, although I don't think its a good idea as there aren't regiments for White Englishmen only, or Fijians only , so why Sikhs, unless they are recruited directly from overseas like Ghurkhas. With regards to my reply to this, thread, I think the OP was saying that Sikhs should have their own regt where they can wear their turbans etc whereby I was saying, they should be able to do it in any regt they join

I don't think so that they recognize Sikhs first then Gorkas to them all is the same Indian and the reason why all Indians had joined the forces they didn't have a choice. One time Sikhs were fighting against the British during Maharaja Rangeet Singh , other Sikh Maharajas Hari Singh, British soldiers crushed the Sikh army and made them slaves like with Black Africans some Sikhs were taken and forced to work for the British example sugar plants, railway so were other Indians Muslims and Hindu's. The British divided the Punjab in half kicking Sikhs out of their Holy land where Guru Nanak main Sikh shrine is now called West Punjab in Pakistan. I'm Asian Christian from Bombay. The country shouldn't have been split in half. Sikh rulers were weak and lost India to the British. They will always see Indian as an Indian Not white which is Anglo Saxon English. Where ever British ruled Africa they too were in the British army and fought for British equally as the Indians , Sikhs have self voice what they did for the British but so did others. Sikhism was founded to abolish all separation, hate, racism, castes, etc including pointless rituals. That's why Guru Nanak created Sikhism. The beauty of it all is that he never created it to be a prophet with a large followers base.. He created it to bring the world together, rather then separate it. Times have Changed now,Just like the Hindus have forgotten 80 percent Sikhs sacrifices during the Independence struggle. Jalianwala happened during the last days of British Rule. Sikhs have always fought for British during foreign wars, British have always praised Sikhs During Anglian-Sikh Battles in Pre Independence India.

Sikhs have been apart of the royal army for a few generations. I don't think its all about "diversity" the bearskin hat guards are called "the queens guard" and are traditionally used to protect the queen, otherwise any regiment can take over the shift if they are in reserve, as the Gurkhas have been put on guard duty before, but I do agree its nice to see the Sikhs getting some light shown on their loyalty to Britain, may the lord bless these kind and faithful chaps

All can trace it historical herritage back to the British-India colonial. Where India Sikh troop serve under British Indian army. They fought during ww1 and ww2 from Fall of Singapore and Malaya to Jungle of Burma, They lost many brave man. Multiple VC awarded to this brave Sikh. That what i like about British Armed forces, keeping that tradition alive.

I am a Sikh and can say that THIS is nothing to be proud of. Our religion was founded from fighting AGAINST tyranny and higher caste systems who think they are "superior" to other human beings. It truly saddens me that Sikhs are actually proud of serving the queen or any other so called "royal" family. Let alone fighting in their profitable wars. Sikhs should be innovating the world. I have noticed a difference in pronunciation of "Sikh", we Americans say "seek" but British say, "sick". which is correct?
