Neck pain rehab often involves strengthening the deep neck flexors which are a series of smaller muscles located in the deep part of the front of the neck. I find that not much attention is paid to the muscles of the back of the neck.
These muscles are crucial for extension of the head/neck and also have attachments in the upper back. Due to this, they are often involved in issues of neck tension and upper back tension.
Posterior Neck Planks are a great way to subtlety increase load to these muscles. Start off slow, with short duration isometric holds. Gradually build up to repeated lifts off of the wall. Pair these with common deep neck flexor exercises listed below.
