I had this happen as a private tutor. I had one student come back after many months break, they asked for a better price, promising more work later in the year. As the day approached for the student to start, conveniently he has no ride (I can't remember why he got rid of the car) and needs me to go to their home to pick them up. Then they wanted an even better price in exchange when he finally did get a new car. The last straw was when they quit altogether before what they had agreed to as the length. Complicating the whole thing was that the student owed me $300 which he was paying off in installments and I couldn't have him just walk. Ugh, just really disgusting. Yuck.

yes! like many of the tactics, I think using them is borderline dodgy, the thing is to be able to recognise when they are being used on you. And the tricky thing about the salami is the because the slices are small you don't notice it happening to start with, and then when you do notice, it's almost too late! But at least you can stop the rot by saying "I can do that but it'll cost you" or "I can do that but I'll want X in exchange" - and you can even take it all back off the table and say "do you know what, I'm thinking this whole thing isn't really worth it for me any more..."

@@theChrisCroft The thing that allowed these jokers to walk so far is that they owed me money and I couldn't risk them completely be shaken off. I guess this is just reason #581 not to extend credit to your clients.

@@theChrisCroft What do you do when a negotiation accidentally touches on something a little personal? The car ride was especially troublesome because my car's AC wasn't working and I really didn't want to reveal my personal financial situation. They didn't know they touched on something personal.

@@ThePeterDislikeShow you can choose how much you reveal, - you can just be vague and say "I've got a problem with my car at the moment" - and if they ask for more information (none of their business!) you can say "I don't want to go into the details" - even if they say "yes, but WHY won't you pay that?" you can still say "I'm sorry but I can't go into that" - not answering can be quite powerful.

@@theChrisCroft I suppose. I hate how presumptious some people can be! Anyway, I'm glad they paid off the entire balance and I was eventually free to walk away. I ended up doing a giving a few rotten concessions our last couple of months just to get completely paid up.

Do you think people plan salami slacing from the beginning or are they just indecisive and see more and more things they want?
@theChrisCroft
@theChrisCroft 4 жыл бұрын
could be either - the effect would be the same - but I think mostly they plan it before the start. and it can be a very effective strategy!

Chris I find I have a problem with negotiating at work. I find it's hard to negotiate after you have done a great job --- the company just swallows it, but before you do it you don't know what you're going to do and you don't want to overpromise. Is there a good happy medium in between the two?
