"The higher you're flying the faster you go" is true. 250 knots at ground level is around 450kmh, 250 knots on FL380 is around mach .70
@XxDmanMCxX4 жыл бұрын
The speed of Mach numbers changes with altitude. Mach 1 at sea level is 1225kph, at 30kft it's 1091kph. Flying higher also means you need to travel a higher total distance. The main reason it's done is for efficiency, since less air = less drag = better fuel efficiency.

Some comments about this game and Dan's questions: Those units are painful. Literally _0_ of them are what are actually used in aviation, with the possible exception of distance between cities. The physics leave a _lot_ to be desired. In terms of world design, really? That is poor. Also, that building at the end of the runway and the airport designs themselves are, to put it _plainly,_ not great. Controls could definitely be better. No flaps? Hm. The aircraft design is ugly. I think one of those planes was supposed to be a 787, but it may as well be a child's drawing. The thrust lever is backwards. Notice how pushing it forward to increase the thrust puts it into the "REV" section of it, standing for reverse. Good effort, but no. The radar screen on the HUD isn't even found on aircraft. Aircraft have the magenta-line-machine (don't know the name), and that radar is only in the tower. The instrumentation is lacking. No artificial horizon? The hoops before landing aren't great. That is _not_ the 3° glideslope, not even close. £13? I'm afraid to say Dan, you were ripped off. Big time. In terms of what Dan said, yes, as you get higher, aircraft get faster. This is due to there being less air, decreasing drag and so speed. As an example, a 737-700 could reach about 500 knots at 35,000'. This would be nigh impossible at 5000'. That "big forehead" aircraft is the Airbus Beluga, designed to transport aircraft fuselages to other places. However, I'm not in any way qualified to say this, so take it with a pinch of salt. I think I put more effort into this comment than the devs into this game. If you're looking for a flight simulator but don't want to hand over £13 to some shitty devs, play GeoFS. It's a free browser-based flight simulator with decent physics, controls, and graphics as far as a free flight sim goes. The environment in the free game isn't great, but for just €10/year you can get HD graphics for the environment. Not to mention there's multiplayer. I wasn't paid to say this, I just think it's of decent quality for a free flight sim. (This video was great. Thank you Dan.)
@cheatsenabled16624 жыл бұрын
Or if you want to play a flight simulator that doesn't try to charge yearly for better graphics, try FlightGear. Not only does it cost nothing, it's also free/libre software, so anyone can contribute to it and improve it.

@Streaky1000014 жыл бұрын
Dan, I'd just like to mention that the idea that the speed changes based on altitude isn't actually completely ludicrous. There's multiple speeds used in aviation, firstly indicated air speed (IAS), this is how fast the aircraft is moving relative to the surrounding air, and is measured by measuring the RAM air pressure, that is to say the pressure which the air exerts on leading edge areas. Since IAS is measured based entirely off the pressure you'll notice you're IAS drop with higher altitude, since there are simply less air molecules to exert pressure. Another form of speed is True Air Speed (TAS), this is your airspeed corrected for changes in ambient pressure. At 10,000ft of altitude TAS will be around 20% higher than IAS. You also have ground speed (GS) to think about. GS is you're speed relative to the terrain underneath you and has nothing to do with the speed of the air passing over the aircraft, so you could maintain a constant airspeed, but if the windspeed is changing you're GS will change with it. These aren't all the types of speed either, there's a few others, but these are the main ones to consider. Most, if not all, aircraft will show IAS on the primary airspeed display, as all of the reference speeds for the aircraft (such as stall speed, maximum permissible speed, flap and gear extension speeds etc etc) will be given in IAS, as will any speed restrictions in relevant regulations or requested by air traffic controllers. Some aircraft will also display TAS and GS as additional information. Now, my point with all this rambling is that the game doesn't actually specify weather it's showing IAS, TAS or GS, it's not entirely impossible that you're altitude would effect the speed being displayed, however I personally feel it is poor game design :P
