The lack of localisation in Italy was so dire that, back when Pokémon Red and Blue released, the marketing explicitly pointed out that it was translated in Italian as a selling point.

Also, the Spanish translation of Ocarina of Time came in a booklet because they didn't have enough time to program it into the game. Apparently, the marketing for Majora's Mask and OOT3D both mentioned having in-game Spanish text as a selling point.

That Star Tropics secret reminds me of the Phantom Hourglass puzzle where you have to close your DS in order to progress. After spending some time trying to find the solution, I couldn't figure it out, so I took a break and closed the DS. When I came back to the game, the puzzle was solved. I'm guessing this happened to everyone else too, haha.

I remember just staring at the screen for a long time and eventually, for some reason, I turned the DS sideways. At that point I realised that the top screen and the bottom screen fit perfectly together. It's still one of my favourite Zelda puzzels as it really made me feel like I was thinking outside the box when I solved it.

Meanwhile, needing the letter was EXACTLY how Nintendo got me to buy Startropics game with my allowance. I had rented it but got stuck. Now, in all honesty, I could've brute forced until I eventually stumbled on the code (or if I had tried to get clever I would've accidentally found it quicker since "747" was the popular phone number prefix for my area). But it was tedious and felt like cheating. Since the rental place didn't [read: legally couldn't] include that stuff, I asked my dad drive me to Toys R Us to pick up a copy ASAP. The solution of dipping actual paper into actual water wasn't as out of the blue as one would think, as this was a time where games included shit with their packaging *besides* instruction manuals. Some games had posters, stickers, or anything else classified as "feelies" for either company marketing or additional in-game lore stuff like maps and item/enemy compendiums... stuff that's either all fanmade and curated anymore, or sold only in more expensive "collector's editions" or as separate outside marketing.

To this day I find baffling Nintendo released Startropics on the Switch's Online subscription without the electronic manual from Wii and Wii U (it was such a perfect system) In the same way they release untranslated Mario's Super Picross and then post a video in social media explaining what the tutorial is trying to tell you

@@BlazeHeartPanther in this case they seem to suck specifically since the switch era. The virtual console alternatives to the letter had some effort in them and the Wii U version at least gave you some context on the letter. The switch online version of startropics not containing any such context or digital letter is a perfect encapsulation of how little shit Nintendo gives about this stuff in the Switch era

Yeah they probably just thought "Oh well everyone will just google it and find the answer in two seconds anyway." But there are a lot of gamers who, if they thought it was an in-game action that needed to be done, would insist on figuring it out on their own. Thus, they'd waste hours and hours of frustration not even realizing they're trying to find something that doesn't exist in the game.

Growing up in Hungary, the only way of playing a game was with a dictionary in your hand, would've loved a manual with the translation in Hungarian for Zelda lol

Childhood favs would be Super Mario Bros 3, Mega Man 2 & 6, Double Dragon 2, Little Nemo the Dream Master, and Kirby's Adventure. My favorites that have persisted up to the present day though would have to be Mega Man 2 & 3, Zelda 1, Crystalis, Metroid, and Blaster Master.

As a mexican, one good thing Nintendo left me by not caring enough to translate american releases into spanish, is that I actually paid attention on english classes just to being able to understand the games I was playing.

I remember playing it multiple times, and always running into a state where I can't proceed. Now I'm looking at this video, and... ARE YOU ******* KIDDING ME!?!?!?!?!?!?!? MY BLOODY GOSH! XD

Games have mostly been English only up until the Wii in North America with no translation given in the instructions booklet. There are languages other than English in the Americas you know? At least Europe got their games translated starting on the SNES.
