I love how - since this is only Metal Gear Solid before playing MGSV - he's still missing quite a bit of story. Because they rely on story from Metal Gear 1 and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, both of which are before the first MGS, but _after_ MGSV, which leads directly into Metal Gear 1 and comes directly after the prologue, which is a separate game called Ground Zeroes, which comes right after the PSP games called Portable Ops and Peace Walker, which-

This is how I feel about MGSV. I'm a HUGE stealth fan, and I heard that the game is amazing, but the story is so complex that I feel like I would be so lost (never played a Metal Gear Solid game). I love games with a story and I want to be able to enjoy that and not just the gameplay.

+Tylermike75 Actually, 5 doesn't have a good story. My MGS fan friend and his big brother told me that 5 is the disappointment of the year. I mean, the gameplay is good and the AI nice and he really liked the new gameplay elements they put in, but the story is just about Big Boss making the army and upgrading the motherbase and the characters are all like "Oh fuck I'm so fucking pissed man holy shit I'm gonna avenge everything man I don't need bionic limbs I wanna remember the pain of my dead friends and have no arm and a leg". He said that 5 doesn't feel like a MGS game because it's so not story rich. He also said that even Metal Gear Rising feels more canon than 5.

+Tylermike75 All you actually need is to read a plot summary of MGs3 and Peace Walker. Or play them yourself, they're fan favorites anyway. Ground Zeroes and Phantom Pain are prequels to the 'main' series, so you only need to know about the other prequel entries. And since MGsV is meant to attract new fans anyway, they'll probably try to make it accessible to newcomers for you--though I wouldn't know, since I don't have the disposable income atm to buy either MGsV game, even though I do follow the series.

+FromTheInternets Haven't played it, but from what I understand, the gameplay is like Far CryxPeace Walker. Mostly open world stealth with missions to progress the narrative, and short cutscenes between missions, with most of the narrative told through cassette tapes. Which is disappointing, because, although the cutscenes were ludicrously long, they were bearable because they were well-directed and gave Metal Gear a distinct style. Now it looks like Metal Gear by Ubisoft. Gonna buy it anyway once I can afford it, but I thought that the first two acts of MGs4 were a great model for modern Metal Gear gameplay, and I'm disappointed that Kojima's last entry is going the 'trendy' route.

Apojuice Dagda Mor My friend and I talked also about how Big Boss doesn't talk at all and how the game is actually unfinished, because Konami stopped funding the game at one point. If you consider the fact that there was videos of Kiefer Sutherland being face mocapped for Snake going around probably a year or two before the release of the game, why doesn't Snake say a goddamn thing during gameplay? He just nods and is really silent compared to previous MGSes. We also talked about the open world being dumb too. Like the open world is just sand and rocks in Afghanistan. Of course it's realistic, but it really isn't a good design choice to make a open world with nothing in it. Also I remember him telling me you can evade the enemy outposts and patrols by just going around them in the empty open world.

You and your friend might not have looked at the cassette tapes either, a bunch of them(especially after getting Huey) talk about the events of previous games and what's currently happening in that game without all the cutscenes, but I see the tapes as just crammed in and they should have been put into the intermission times instead of being optional to listen to. *Spoilers* If you want to figure out why Big Boss doesn't talk like, at all, is because the Big Boss you play in the game is a fake. He was a medic on Mother Base who got his face surgically changed to look like Big Boss's. The bandaged man at the prologue of the game who saves your ass? That's the real Big Boss. He uses you as a decoy to get Cipher's attention while the real Big Boss does his own missions to stop Cipher. Ocelot knows of the double the whole time.

I love both Kingdom Hearts and Metal Gear Solid BECAUSE of their intricate and convoluted storylines. They're probably the only game franchises that can keep a single, consistent plot through all the titles. You gotta admit, that's kind of impressive.

In preparation for MGS 5 I also had to undergo initiation of the MGS lore through an electrodump. To those unaware of the story: step one is understanding that there are 4 characters called Snake, 3 of which are clones, 2 of which are playable and the other 2 are bosses. One of the Snakes kills a character called 'The Boss' (who is not a boss) and gains the title 'Big Boss', who is also not a boss and is in fact one of the playable Snakes. It's dumb. Rip Jerma. Long live Kojima.
