Real masters master the fundamentals and make hard things look easy. That's why Stockton's game is nothing flashy and yet he is probably the best true point guard in the history of NBA. Really miss watching him.

Yep, strong and durable, he missed only 22 games out of 1558 games - in 19 years. All time assist and steals leader too. When you watch him play, after doing the offense, you can see him hustle back to play defense and he played hard, he had no fear regardless of who it was. Seen him go after Shaq with zero hesitation. Legend is right dude, well said.

@@kingofpendragon OK. So who was a better PG? Everyone he ever played against and with says he was the greatest decision maker with the ball in his hand ever. @gdog3finally4 жыл бұрын
@@yellow8206 That's right. The Jazz didn't get much TV time until Stockton was in his middle 30s. The grainy footage of the 80s shows great speed with the ball in his hands. Also a very strong base is well said. Stockton would be great today as well. The defense can't lay a hand on guys with the ball or coming off screens anymore. Stockton dealt with bigger bodies draped on him and fought through it and dribbled through it. Stockton was as tough and durable as anyone who played the game ever.
@robertrawlinsii93724 жыл бұрын
@@I3ucket. He is insanely athletic!!!! How easy would he go by guys especially early in his career. John was primarily a penetrating scorer in the NBA. Now if he was blowing by Billy bob YMCA than yes that wouldn't be a big deal but he is going by Gary Payton or Isaiah Thomas. Was he more athletic than those guys? No but he was insanely athletic.
@keplerconcept52874 жыл бұрын
@@I3ucket. He had massive hands -- as big as a 6'11" man's -- he was known to have a heartbeat half that of a normal man's, and his first step was so effective that he was able to take any defender to the basket off the dribble into his mid-30s. You can find a video from 1995 when Stockton was 30+ where he's iso'ing Jordan consistently, taking him to the rack. Isiah Thomas said that people didn't understand that what made Stockton so difficult to guard was his foot speed. I get the feeling people don't watch his play-by-play carefully, and only believe that he was somehow a "crafty" player. AKA he was white.

It took Stockton 3 years to win the starting position from the great Ricky Green. The next 9 years in a row he lead the league in assists and was in the top five in assists AND steals most of his 19 yr career. Played both ends of the court. Incredibly he stole the ball just 0.6 times less a game for his career than he turned it over. Averaged basically a perfect game with his ball handling and decision making. Shooting was superb averaging 51, 38, and 82% from the line. Steph Curry as of now 47, 42 and 90% from free throws. Stockton didn't shoot threes at the start of his career since it wasn't considered a good shot averaging only 0.3 threes a game his first three yrs. His most threes averaged a game- 2.8 attempts shooting 44% from deep. He went over forty percent from three seven times but his forte was getting in the paint and setting everyone up. Tough as they come and mentally couldn't be intimidated- he intimidated with execution. "Best leader I've played against."- Magic. "Hardest to guard" Gary Payton . "Id start a team with John Stockton"- Wilt
