My ecoboost 2016 3.5 has been tuned since 12k miles. Ran hard, towing across country many trips, maintains and still runs great at 167k miles of long hauls. My Chevy 5.3 didn’t make it that long with a trans rebuild, some electrical issues, a fuel pump and two alternators. Way more power, way more. Better driving and running vehicle with zero mechanical issues aside from a bad sensor which was simple to replace. I’ll stick with my ecoboost.

Not sure you can compare a Chevy with a Ford. You'd have to go Ford vs Ford I think. I'm looking at the 2.7 btw. I'm not sure if I would need more than 400 lb/ft torque. Good to know you can haul. That's my concern that it will give way after hauling for a while.

We jumped, drifted, did burnouts, in a bunch of 3.5 ecoboost F150 that were getting abandoned in Iraq (we had to go around the FOB and pick up all the suburban 2500s and F150s and park them in a field with the keys in the ignition) in 130 degree heat, during a dust storm. The trucks took it like a champ. Also I learned a regular F150 3.5TT can jump like a raptor, just don't expect the landing to be comforable, still more comfortable than a HMMWV though.

I have an 2011 f150 with the 3.5 ecoboost and it now has 370,000 miles on it with few issues. The biggest thing you need to remember on this engine is you have to use a very good synthetic oil and filter otherwise they’re problematic. I use Amsoil signature series oil with their 25,000 mile oil filter and I change it every 12,000 miles. I have zero oil consumption, zero timing issues and I still average 17 mpg and it sees 95/100 mph on a weekly basis.
@brucejohnson12642 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't recommend such long intervals between oil changes. Condensation will get in there, as will combustion products, and no oil can magically remove contaminants. I change no less than every 6 months (especially in the spring since winter is when things get lots of condensation), or 4k-6k miles, whichever comes first.

12,000?! Amsoil or otherwise you’re lucky to have reached 200k without major work. I’ve done a 2,000 mile oil change on the 3.5 and the oil is already DARK. Like any turbo motor these are not long interval engines. They’re very powerful and long lasting but they are not tolerant of long oil change intervals. If it were me I’d spend half the money on the oil and change it twice as often, and with an OEM filter

I've had my second gen 2.7 Ecoboost f150 for 4 years and the only problem I had was the EGR cooler tube filling with soot (normal for turbo vehicles) and when the dealership forgot to put enough oil into the engine..ZERO issues otherwise. The main thing with the Ecoboost (3.5 for sure at least) is STAY ON TOP OF YOUR OIL CHANGES! They need good clean oil. The timing chain is really long, the guides will wear and the phasers have tiny passages. Keep up your regular scheduled maintenance and they do just fine. They don't tolerate poor maintenance as much as other engines.
@bradleythomsen30835 жыл бұрын
Strange. Ford 5.4 3v has the exact same problem. Small gunked up oil ports leading to cam phaser issues. Still everyone I know with one has gone 220-240k before selling or trading.

From what I understand is that the 5.4 3v suffered the same problem if oil changeds weren't adhered to religiously or poor filters/oil used. Now, maybe you did what you're supposed to but I've also seen that the oil pumps are not sufficient. There are aftermarket high flow ones.
@2strksrule5 жыл бұрын
Staying on top of maintenance is a requirement for ALL new engines. Look at the Toyota sludge problems a few years ago (just google it). I bet the majority of those owners who had issues would not be able to provide legitimate maintenance records. Same goes for any modern engine. They are much more highly stressed, rev higher, run hotter. Do what the owner guide says and you will most likely have smooth sailing.

It doesn't matter what i use, it gets an OE filter and the exact spec oil called out in the manual. The Ford F-250 6.2 gasser is fine, as is the RAM 2500 with the 6.4 gasser. The RAM has cylinder deactivation for regular highway driving so it'll help on mpgs. Both are nice trucks though and will handle a larger travel trailer with no problems.

@@dorothylouisegage5286 If you are going for a new truck, I agree to definitely stay above 150/1500 trucks. 250/2500 is the lowest I would go. Also, for stability's sake, depending on how large of an RV you decide to get, I would honestly opt for a 350/3500 truck with dual rear wheels, as when driving down the road and passing semis (or being passed by them), you will notice that the trailer will try to control you a LOT. Especially the larger the trailer is. Dual rear wheels will help eliminate/reduce the so-called, "Tail-wagging the dog" syndrome. Ford's newest diesel isn't too bad, either. No head bolts stretching on these newest iterations. The 6.0L was notorious for that, which is why Ford decided to start building it in-house instead of outsourcing it from International. You should have nothing to worry about there. If you're buying older, my personal opinion is to get a 7.3L if you're buying Ford. Their gas engines just drink too much, in my opinion. If you go Chevrolet, you won't improve much on fuel efficiency, but their gas engines are all pretty solid. They've been sticking with the same general design for years, and they have worked out a lot of the kinks. Good overall trucks. Just watch out for electrical stuff. Dodge/Ram has the Cummins diesel. I would not go for their gas engines. Transmissions are notorious for dying on Chrysler products. Just be very aware of that. Other than that, and what others have said here, that's pretty much all the advice I can muster for truck buying. I worked for Ford for years, but I am not biased (too much) toward them. I just know their products very, very well. Cheers, and best of luck! If you need any more specific info, especially about the Fords, just ask! I have a fair wealth of knowledge about them. ~Sir Timothy

I’d have to disagree with Scotty on this one. Ecoboost engines have been out since 2009 overseas and is based off of other companies tech (Mazda) who have been doing it. EVERY engine and manufacturer have small number of people that have issues, overall the ecoboost have been very reliable. Now before someone jumps in and says “I know this person that broke down at 20-30k blah blah blah” if you look for it, you will find issues with every car. Also, Ford F-150 has been the best selling car in America for years, so any major issues would have been discovered by now. (Ie the issues they had with the 6.0L diesel in their super duty trucks)
@iarpak5 жыл бұрын
I think Scotty's perspective is looking more at long term reliability, past 100k miles. I have an '06 Accord as my DD with the 4-cylinder, manual transmission. It's got 161k miles on it and I'll probably get at least another 100k out of it before any major repairs are needed. I'm not confident that I could say the same about the 1.5 and 2.0 turbo motors that Honda has in the current Accord.
@redsrt45 жыл бұрын
iarpak I get what he’s saying, I have a 2007 Honda Fit with 312,000 miles on it. So I get it, but ecoboost is not brand new tech, and there are plenty of cases of people having over 100k miles on them and still kicking. Even his argument for not getting the Chevy 4 cylinder turbo in the Silverado, has merit because it’s a brand new engine but it’s not new tech. It’s odd to me that he says don’t get all this tech, but then in his video of 5 trends that he likes in new cars, it’s all about how tech is making them better.

And it is extremely hard to think of a car more reliable than Toyota. The Koreans are starting to produce cars that give the Japanese a run for their money. It is a simple fact that American built cars just don't have the same build quality. The interiors have knobs and buttons that fall off the dash. I had to replace the RHF strut in my Ford at 60,000 miles. That is just not good enough in this age of technology.

all the demand stresses the companies to put things out sooner instead of doing the proper testing. the engines and tech including things like driverless tech is rushed out without the needed time to stress the designs properly. I think it's a good thing for Ford to limit their lineup to just trucks and SUVs because that's narrowing the tech used makes for higher quality. thats the real toyota advantage they simplified their lineup of tech using much of the same stuff across the board the Camry has basically been remolded a lot so it gives them the opportunity to refine designs to make cheaper more durable products.

I currently still have my 2014 F-150 3.5 Eco boost and it runs like a gem (less than 50k miles). I did put an oil catch system on it and the gas mileage increased. Is there anything I should do that Ford doesn't tell its customers?

I have a 2013 with 150k km, still running fine. The thing is to take the factory guidelines seriously. It's a high performance engine, after all. • Frequent oil changes. Take this seriously. Use premium synthetic SN+ rated 5W-30 oil and a premium filter. Turbochargers are hard on oil. Oil changes are important to any engine, but they're critical to the EB 3.5. • The first generation EB 3.5 has a timing chain that's somewhat prone to wear, and a single tensioner. Eventually the tensioner runs out of range, leading to timing issues. Oil care helps to mitigate this, but it's something to be aware of. If you get a diagnostic message about timing, get that chain and tensioner solenoid replaced ASAP. It's an expensive task, but the alternative is far more expensive. • The first generation used direct fuel injection, which doesn't provide a means to wash oil mist off the intake valve stems, so they tend to coke up. Your aftermarket catch can is intended to reduce the amount of oil misting, and premium synthetic oil helps too. If you ever need to get top end work done, might as well have the valve stems inspected and blasted at the same time. • If you seldom take the engine into turbo mode, the waste gates don't get much exercise, so that one can potentially become stuck open. The one turbo then cycles with a characteristic yip yip yip sound, while the other is fine. An easy mitigation is to spool them up lightly once in a while. You don't have to be terribly aggressive if you don't want to be. But admit it, you do. That's it. Four things, two of which are just responsible care and operation, a third you've already done, and for the fourth you'll get fair warning about the timing chain.

@Dan Razzell I'm looking to buy a used (2016 - 2018) F150 Supercrew 4×4 within the next few weeks. There are 2 2018 3.5L EB and a 2016 5.0L I'm really interested. Your advice is very much appreciated!

My 2012 left me stranded three times.. twice when pulling a trailer across Texas. I traded it in for a naturally aspirated proven design.

Greg black: You have him dialed in. However, from reading posts here i think a lot of people actually take him seriously. Have to regard them with a mixture of pity and contempt. Could you imagine actually making a decision based on his advice?
