This is a great tip and it makes a huge difference. I once saw an interview with Greg Norman where he said short thumb was the key to his entire swing. Any time he would feel tension in his swing he would check his thumb position.

It's crazy crucial. Sometimes these things seem like they've been intentionally hidden. A proper grips makes all the difference. You Will swing just fine automatically with the proper grip. And thumb position and pressure is pretty much the key imo.

As anything in golf ... it depends. To me, the long (and I mean LONG) left thumb on grip is crucial. I went down from a 14 to 7 hcp JUST with this grip modification. Which is also essential for short game, at least for me.

I’m a senior golfer, and like most in my age cohort I’ve lost flexibility. While experimenting with some ways to get a bit more extension in my backswing, I switched to the long thumb. It seems to have helped me do that, and I’m also hitting the ball with more consistency. I think this is more a matter of personal preference and less of the swing killer than MrShortGame Golf argues here.

I agree 100% with this take. Short thumb restricted my wrist cock. Long thumb RELAXED muscles and tendons in left forearm and wrist. Gave me more wrist cock and more speed.

Golf is the main sport that every golfers swing is different. I've seen some have a swing that looks off balance and bad tempo, yet they find fairways. I recently tried the long thumb grip change which does give a slightly firm grip. But I don't feel tense with it, I feel like I have more of a connection to the club. Shot my best game the other day making the switch. Everyone is different and just find what works for you! Now get out there and hit em straight

Try out this idea... it is the short thumb idea but with no thumb. That's right no thumb! If you're right handed, take your regular grip, but put the thumb on your left hand behind your right hand. This is kind of hard to explain but you'll see how it works once you take your grip. This takes the whole thumb out of the equation. A friend of mine showed me this technique and it works! I guess it's a version of the baseball grip with interlocking or overlapping grip.

I work at a range and teach several students. Its always the same profile. Lil older, physical limitations. And the one thing they all have in common as far as golf? Their grip. There are guys and gals who have been playing for years and cannot hit a ball. When I first meet them I start by asking to see their grip. Its unbeliveable how many say "an instructor told me to hold it like this. I mean, thumbs on top, hands nearly separated, hands rotated so far on either side that they cannot hit a ball. 15 minutes later, with much whining and sniveling, they are hitting balls pretty straight. Just picked up a new student. GRIP GRIP GRIP!! If you cant do it right, you cant control your swing.

This nonsense has to STOP! I need to just move where you live and take lessons to make sure everything I'm doing is correct. By the way, you fixed my fairly slight fade after I watched your video of correct shaft placement in my hand. I am so grateful to you for that - I really appreciate everything you do to make us mere mortal golfers better.

I am wondering what a winter of hitting on TM4 will mean to my game when the season opens back up again. They will close the course Oct 31 no matter the weather and open when appropriate so I won't have an outdoor option until then...

so this may be a silly question, but may this be the place. I tried golf last week for the first time. I used a hybrid, from decathlon, not from toyota. I have no professor yet, but i will join classes soon, so all i know is from watching people like matt. After a couple hour trying in the training field, and around 250 balls -and probably half of the time i hit somehow the floor, so is more gardening than golf- my left hand, in the bones that go from the ring finger to the wrist started to pain a lot. I was unable to properly close the hand for some days, and still hurts. Any advice?
@roberttarrant76463 жыл бұрын
Go get a lesson from a PGA teaching pro. What you xxxx'ed out is called grounding the club or, hitting it fat. This type impact will cause pain in your hand which very quickly becomes tendinitis which, will sideline you anywhere from a few weeks to a few months. Again, go get an in person lesson from a PGA teaching pro. Fixing this type issue is their main job and, there is no flat 2D answer to your question.

@@IronDrummer91 Unfortunately I've had 2 sets of X-rays, 2 MRI's, and been to 4 orthopedists with no real answers. Over time and with next to no golf activity, pain has gone away enough for me to play a couple rounds relatively comfortably over the last couple of months. The fact that Matt has his while thumb literally on the grip is funny. You can have your thumb extended without it completely laying on the grip. If I don’t go long thumb, I can’t hinge the club at all and get no speed…I can more easily produce power and hinge the club with a long thumb, so I don’t agree that a short thumb is right for everyone…some people can’t flex their hand the way it’s necessary to get speed…I’ve got no tension in my arm with a long thumb since I’m used to it…the club is being held by the ring finger and middle finger of the left hand mostly, so long or short thumb shouldn’t change your grip…IMO.

For me best thing I did with my grip is just focus on holding it in my fingers. I think that helps to naturally create a strong grip and keep the hands a bit looser, and the thumb placement as you describe. Gripping an shaft without a grip, fishing pole, etc. is a good way to get this feel

But opinions, NOT RESEARCH supports this thumb point.
@brich20653 жыл бұрын
One small point. Long thumbers, not to be confused with hitchhikers, generally orient their hand stronger thus accessing the fingers. Dustin Johnson and Nicklaus have done ok with it. Ricky fowler too compared to golfing public. Among 100s of other pros throughout time.
