I feel like there's a missed opportunity to have those panels actually have a function without needing to remove them and build something from them. I feel like it would be more exciting if, instead of being a detachable item to be populated with components, the PCB had a couple of areas where the capacitance of the user's finger could be used as an expression controller, or you could have a theremin like arrangement that could do something similar without directly touching the pedal. I'm thinking of it as being a means to add some circuit bending effects without dramatically upping the component count or crowding the casing with knobs and switches.

Hehe, I think we have a similar mind 😁😁 working on some stuff that is based on the idea of pcb touching!

Hey Simon, glad to have you back and that you’re ok! As for live circuits on the top panels, that’s pretty common in synthesizers, but maybe not guitar pedals. Touch capacitive pads often have SMT stuff on the bottom side of the PCB. Like Make Noise Strega, Buchla Music Easel, stuff like that. Me and my friends built a Music Easel inspired synth for a school project, and we designed a keyboard PCB with sensors, multiplexers, and a Raspberry Pi Pico reading all the data, which spit out control voltages to control the analog synth voice.

Very excited to see where this all leads in the new year! You are always ahead of the game with your concepts. The additional PCB to expand the pedal is a genius move! I am personally getting into bending and building and have found your channel a great resource, all the way back to when you were bending user pedals back in the day. Such great insight into the process! Having a breadboard show or segment would be inspiring to those like me. Easy to get inspiration anywhere on your channel though, so thank you for that.

The prices for Simon's pedals/gear is really reasonable, 1,000 SEK is around $100 USD. For a bespoke handmade piece of gear/art that's more than a reasonable price in my opinion. If you made a video of how to use a pedal with a DAW that would be so helpful, Happy New Year Simon!
They hide it very well but the Dirtywave M8 actually works this way, with the front panel also the main PCB. Very clever construction method, but with through hole parts you risk shorts and things, which could increase the number of warrantee repairs you have to do.

I've always seen you as divergent, a routine is great, especially as executive function is flawed. You can lean into it once its set up and life gets tough/busy. Win win for us as well, Mondays are always tough, we can look forward to getting home and getting cosy with the Magpie. Do it, do it, do it.
