I have a 15-meter ex-BOC single-handed masthead cutter built in France. When I first got it, there was no windless. Like you, It was a lot of work to pull in the chain and finally the anchor. I thought I had a good solution for a time. One day I was in a nice protected bay, or I thought, and a southerly wind came straight into the mouth of a small bay. I found myself dragging on a lee shore. I used a hook and long sheet and ran the line back to my cockpit primary winch and winched in 15 meters and reset the hook and line quickly, having to reset the chain hook a number of times till the ground tackle was up. Your boat is lighter and smaller than mine, so this could be a good solution to what you're doing now with no control if you get hit by a gust. In the end, I installed a windless. One day you may find, as I did later that same day - I re-anchored again, and my boat dragged. The problem was there was shale under a thin layer of mud, and no Anchor could dig in enough to hold the boat in a strong wind - Since I was solo with a group of other boats this time I need to help a second time to haul up the anchor as I was worn out. Even using a primary winch and running back and forth resetting the line and chain hook... I was In trouble. I need someone to come on board to motor my boat forward to recover the ground tackle.

This is a good solution when you have a small (light) boat. In any case, don't use chain that is not suited for your boat. So if you need 10 mm chain as a minimum, you cannot start with 12, then go to 10 and finish with 6 or 8 mm. After all the thinnest chain is the weakest link. I guess for your boat the 6 mm will do fine so your solution works perfect. Just a bit heavy to lift it up from the bottom. Nice job though.

@@Nixontheman well to my understanding the weight should probably be concentrated in the middle of any given length of chain that is out to have the most effect.

0:05 Can someone (@Hugo) explain what “scandalizing” the main means on a Marconi rig?
@leaveonlywake
@leaveonlywake Жыл бұрын
Use your topping lift to pick up the after end of the boom. Mucks up the sail shape, makes it inefficient and so you can go slow while doing other things.
@cjmelendy1978

Thanks @leaveonlywake that’s what I gathered but I had only heard the term used on a gaff rig which is a bit different.

When sailing off an anchor I first raise the mainsail 3/4 of the way, then after raising the anchor I raise the main the remainder. Similar concept.

@TheSailingFrenchman
@TheSailingFrenchman 6 ай бұрын
Oui, j'avais aussi regardé les Lofrans à l'époque, mais je n'en avais pa trouvé dans mon budget. Est-ce que la fonction manuelle va assez vite? J'en avait testé un au port et la bringuebale était vraiment laborieuse

I bought a cheap D type copy. It was worse than useless. Dragged on sand. I later tried pulling it across mud, it just turned onto its back. I think the geometry is important, but copies may have got it wrong.

I thnk thay you could improve your system much more: When you have an anchor weighing 6-8 kg, you can more than double the holding power of the anchor by going from 6-8 kg to 12-16 kg. Read Dulhunty and Fraysse anchor experts, about that. In that way you only add 6-8 kg to your gear and MORE than doubled the holding. After that you can SAVE half of the weigth of chain, by going to 25 m 8MM + elastic NYLONrode 12MM. You forget that the anchor will still hold very good - at least 80%, even if the angle pulling at the anchor is 4-5 degrees. So you do not loos much holding power by reducing chain. Short: You can save much weigth by increasing anchor itself, and reduce chain - and still get BETTER holding.

Always enjoy your videos. Disappointed to get a lecture on anchoring though as you clearly don’t know much about the subject. Also in the same breath you seem to dismiss the Pete Smiths, Dashews, SVPanope, etc etc all of whom have anchored a great deal more than you as ‘pub’ sailors. It’s a fascinating subject to discuss in the pub or anywhere else.
