Wow Scott I had my Honda (302k) sitting since 10/16 I actually ask you a question about it on a live.. I finally figured out what was wrong, and fixed it. I started it this June and it ran like a dream very smooth. I had 3/4 tank of 2 yr old gas which ran with no problems. Next time I'll try that stabilizer...

Hi Scotty, I believe the colors are a throwback from the old aviation days, when octane was critical in aircraft engines. Red=80, Blue=100, Green=115, Purple=145 and jet fuel was clear. A pilot would know immediately if the wrong type was pumped into the fuel tanks or if there was water in the fuel. Great videos!!

Great overview of most car related issues. Just wish I had the patience to take on large jobs. And Scotty is right about new cars, working on older cars (pre-1990) is so much easier. BTW, gas is different in each state. Gas from CA sucks! Too many additives to meet EPA requirements. Gas in TX is so much better and cheaper. Glad we live in the same state, Scotty.
@THOMMGB
@THOMMGB 6 жыл бұрын
I appreciate what you're telling all of us, but my experience with old gasoline was different. My Mom's 1991 Nissan Pathfinder sat in the heat and snow in Carson City, NV for 4 1/2 years with a little less than 1/4 tank of gas. There was no fuel stabilizer in the tank. Two of the tires were so cracked that they wouldn't hold air. Everyone said to drain out the gas tank and clean it out. But much to my surprise, it started right up. I noticed it did run a bit rough. I filled it with premium and drove it back to Los Angeles where it passed the California smog test. That was back in 2006. I never cleaned out gas tank and am using the same fuel pump. It's still running very well in November, 2018.

Do you think the gas in the tank was non ethanol or with ethanol? Makes a big difference for fas that sits. Spoils much quicker with the Ethanol pulling water in

Once I started a car with fuel that was sitting there for 8 years ... it knocked hard, I could hear it. This was a very old car with carburetor and a fuel filter that could be manually removed. I used it for several years as a young driver, had no problems after I put in new fuel.

Scotty! You saved me! We have an early 2000s Buick LeSabre. Used to be driven all the time but now it's a secondary car. Every time we took it out and drove it more than 50 miles or took it on a shopping trip where we'd make plenty of stops/park/start it agains - on the trip home it wouldn't backfire but the car would start to feel weird. I'd be driving along and it would feel like someone took a baseball bat and hit me right under my seat. We knew it was the gas but we didn't know exactly what was wrong. I took it to several mechanics and they'd just shrug. Sometimes we'd get a lot of white smoke coming out of the back until I ran the car about 5-10 minutes as well. Once you explained that the alcohol was evaporating or getting corrupted it all made sense. THIS TIME I put fresh gas in the car before we went on our big shopping trip and it drove back and forth like a dream. I bought the Stabil and now I'm going to put that in every time I fill up and let the car sit for a bit. Thanks again! You're a genius!

Great advice Scotty. If you are going to store your vehicle for an extended period of time (over 3 months) Several mechanics I've spoken with also recommend that you use the STA-BIL and fill up your gas tank with NON-ETHANOL gasoline. It costs a little more than regular gas with ethanol, but it lasts a LOT longer without breaking down or attracting water in your gas tank. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Thankfully I'm near the "County Line" where, if I cross it, Premium Non-Ethanol Gasoline is frequently available... Been meaning to do the same combo for Winter 2023-2024. Just for added precaution. Noticed some Short/Long Term tests of several Stabilizers on KZbin recently and looks like Sta-bil 360 (Geared for treating Regular/Daily Driver Type Equipment that uses Ethanol Blended Fuels for up to 12 months) and various other Stabilizers were able to work as advertised keeping the E10 Regular 87 Octane from becoming a gummy corroded mess when stored for "Winter" (say 5 months). 360 was also the last Stabilizer Additive still standing (lost to an Engineered No Ethanol Fuel which didn't show any fuel breakdown) after 19 months of starting/exercising the engine and fuel. 360 did show degraded fuel but it had also exceeded its stated treatment period and was still performing better then others... Some/Many of the Stabilizers claimed up to 24 month treatment but after just 5 months some weren't even able to do better then Regular E10 without any additives (which during those tests did surprisingly well both long and short term.) As he mentioned... if you know it's going to sit for an extended time giving it a Shot of Stabilizer, draining, or "topping off" with fresh(er) fuel is a good idea. Protect the fuel system and keep it ready for "Spring"/"Winter". Since this Video went online Sta-bil Storage has gone to a 24 month treatment level (vs 12).

Everything you said is 100% correct but you forgot to mention you can find a fuel station that sells non-ethonal fuel and then add stabile which is a lot less likely to attract water ( I know all fuel attracts water especially diesel and ethonal fuel ) and it doesn’t gel up like ethonal fuel. This is what I use in all my quads, mx bikes and small engine equipment I have at my house. Non-ethonal cost more but you have less chance of it gumming up, also when you clear your carbs of fuel it can dry out seals and the plunger so don’t forget to start up every so often.

Thanks Scotty, very informative. Not just cars and motorcycles, but other small engines are affected by old gas. I run my lawn mower and tiller dry rather than leaving them with even treated gas overwinter. I have a gasoline generator for emergency power but left it too long with a full tank of treated gas. When I needed it, of course it wouldn’t start! Fuel line to the gas cock was full of gunky slime. Now I leave it dry of gas and keep rotating-out a gas can filled with treated gas every six months.

Just my two cents here. I'm 67 years old and remember the gas lines of the early 1970's very well. It took the government a couple of months to get the odd even plate number system working. That was in order to make the gas hoarders, which were mostly the cause of the lines, to stop constantly keeping their tanks full. Whether there really was a gas shortage or not is beside the point. If you needed gas at that time, chances are, you waited in long lines for it. Ever since those days I make it a point to keep 100 gallons of gas in a garden shed in 5 gallon cans just like the one Scotty showed in this video. I put 3oz of Sea Foam fuel stabilizer in each can and fill my Jeep up (my other cars is a VW diesel) out of this stock. It takes about six months to rotate through this supply but sometimes I screw up and find a year old can of gas or even older and never have I had a problem with the gas not burning ok. I use this in my small engine stuff as well. I agree we don't need ethanol in gasoline but since we can't make the stuff we have to deal with the reality of the situation. In short todays gas is a very good product and if treated has a very long shelf life.

I always use Stabil in my lawn equipment gas. Even when I'm using them regularly in the summer. This way I know it's good for long down time intervals and over the winter. When spring comes, I charge the batteries and they start right back up like the last time used. Cheap insurance against varnish cause by deteriorated gas.

Scotty, I agree with you and use Stabil Marine in my vehicles. It is designed to "remove" water from fuel (think BOAT) and keep the ethanol in suspension and helps stop water absorption. I use it in our classic 1972 MGB and 1977 MG Midget, as well as my 1999 Honda Valkyrie.!

@Wisdomnidog

Goran Kulić it clogs up and you lose throtle response and starve your engine of gas. I changed the fuel filter on my 99 Mustang GT recently and it had been a LONG time since it was changed and when I tipped the filter, black old dirty gas poured out the end of it! Change that thing out!
@GeneralCrassus

Goran Kulić it just clogs up fuel flow to the injectors. If sediment eventually worked its way through a faulty filter it'll clog up your fuel injectors too, so no/not enough fuel gets to affected cylinders

Last car I stored I drained the tank and ran the engine dry. Several years later I simply used fresh gas after I rolled the engine over to get the oil pressure up. Yes, I gave each cylinder a squirt of oil! I filled the floats of the carb and the tank with fresh gas and it fired right up. I remove the alcohol from a couple gallons of gas and use it in my lawn tools, brush cutters and chain saws before I put them away for the season. Then I empty the tanks and run them dry. No trouble starting them the following season. Several videos on the tube showing how to remove the alcohol from gas.

Ozzstar why? Ethanol is a cheaper to produce octane booster. That way, gas manufacturers don't have to refine the oil as much. It's really only a problem if you let your car sit for too long. And even base gasoline doesn't last forever, thanks to the additives in it, so it's not ethanol fault.
@ozzstars_cars

+hypershadow corn farmers love ethanol because they makes lots of money. That crap melts away rubber fuel lines. More fuel has to be burned than just using gasoline without ethanol to get the same fuel mileage. It also doesn't smell good and gives people headaches. It's the MSG of gasoline, filler garbage.

hypershadow5g Ethenol isnt any cheaper. Thats what they want you to believe by jacking up the prices for non ethanol. E10 doesnt cost anymore than regular did before they made it manditory. Ethanol does damage plastic and rubber components in the fuel system over time. Any car built before 2008 or so will have issues with its fuel system at some point if run on E10 for an extended amount of time. Cars after this time are said to have been built to run on E10. Only time will tell if thats true or not though. Also, ethanol does accelerate the degradation of fuel because it absorbs water and will actually seperate from the rest of the fuel. And then what ends up happening, because water is heavier than gasoline, is that the water will settle at the bottom of the fuel tank where the fuel pump is and then when you go to crank your engine its just sucking up water. Which is bad. And also, as already stated ethanol doesnt burn as efficiently as pure gasoline thus you burn more E10 than non ethanol fuel. Because of the price hike on non ethanol in an effort to phase it out, it isnt worth the price difference anymore but if the prices werent artificially jacked up non ethanol would be a cheaper more efficient fuel to burn.
@TheWilferch
@TheWilferch 6 жыл бұрын
Ethanol is the result of political lobbying only, it has no real-world benefit....please do a deep-dig research on this. Ethanol eats up all manner of polymer and rubber hoses....and it *decreases* gas mileage. And your car doesn't run as well. Altogether "not good".....for a food product better used as a food. If anything, the trend is in the wrong direction. Today's fuels are 10% ethanol and efforts are underway to make it 15% .

I could never understand why the EPA made us put ethanol in our gasoline. The additive burns slightly cleaner but it is more expensive to make and you burn more of it due to the different air fuel ratios of gasoline and ethanol. With modern 3 way cats on our cars, what comes out of the tail pipe is really not all that bad compared to just 15 short years ago. What I find ironic is that the process of making a lithium ion battery actually does more damage to the planet then driving a normal car getting 30 mpg. Electric cars are dumb, we should get into hydrogen powered cars.

I have a question. Many years ago I knew an older mechanic who said it was a good idea to pour the occasional quart of ATF into your fuel tank. He swore by it, and did it on his own vehicles. He said it would burn out with the gas and act as a cleaning agent for any carbon build up in your fuel system/engine. It could smoke a little until you had burned it all out though. Was that a good idea then, and now? Would there be adverse effects, particularly on newer vehicle systems? Just wondering,
