Surface pressure is so heart wrenching and real. “Give it to your sister, it doesn’t hurt, and see if she can handle every family burden.” “Give it to your sister and never wonder if the same pressure would have pulled you under.” Like WHAT- It’s so outstandingly painful and yet so accurate to how many people feel.

“Waiting On a Miracle” is one of the few Disney songs written in 3/4 time; representing how she’s “out of time” or out of the loop/groove her family is in, feeling like an outsider who wants in to make it 4/4. The most beautiful Disney song I’ve heard for sure!

Lin- Manuel Miranda wrote all the music in this! He wrote Hamilton of course as well as the music in Moana. He is Puerto Rican. So when it comes to Ethically diverse representation he is really wonderful at portraying it and doing all the necessary research! Lin isn’t a great singer in my opinion, but that man is so talented when it comes to writing music and lyrics he doesn’t need to be a great singer.

I watched Encanto right when it came out because my mom is Colombian and she was super excited that a Disney movie was representing her culture. “We don’t talk about Bruno” is kind of funny because a lot of my Colombian family will literally say they won’t talk about something then a few moments later they spill everything about it. Fun fact if you wanted the movie: there is a river of different colors at the end. It’s a real river in Colombia :)

Camilo is also the most popular character among the fans is what I keep seeing too. Ironic considering he was barely in the movie. I do admit he is a great character and didn't get his due like he should have. Disney could have done the movie so much better in my opinion and it's already a great movie. They could have intertwined so many different plots and still come out with what they had but better if that makes sense to you. They could have shown all their rooms like how they showed Isabela, Antonio and Bruno's room. They could have Mirabel really interacting with her cousins as well besides her sisters. They could have shown storylines with each of them getting their gifts. Stuff like that. Hopefully the sequel(I heard they want to make a sequel) will focus on Pepa's side of the family and we get to really see more of Mirabel's cousins. What gets me is that Disney did this movie but didn't even utilize the cousins so much. To me it's like what was the point in having them in the film if they don't get any attention either?!?! They were barely in the film. They could have removed them from the film(they could have just made Antonio her little brother) and STILL would have had the same results as what they came out with. C'mon Disney. Don't make a movie about a family with magical powers and then ignore half of the family. That's just stupid.

Would recommend watching Encanto, it’s a great movie! Personally felt a little robbed by the ending but it’s a great movie still. I relate a bit too much to Mirabel(and her sisters) so the intergenerational trauma hit like a train which is arguably a good thing since it’s helped with the discourse about issues in Latin families specially, making it much more easy to talk about and explain to others while helping Latine people who are going/have gone through it. But oof, as a Latina, that ending hurt me. It’s a complicated one for sure.

So, if someone wants to know, all the songs are somewhat inspired by Colombian rhymes and instruments used in the different regional Colombian music (which are very different from one another, we have LOTS of different cultural heritages and backgrounds, thanks to the African-Indigenous-European mixtures): Family Madrigal: Vallenato (from the north - Atlantic coast) Waiting on a Miracle: Joropo (from the east - Llanos Orientales) Surface Pressure: Champeta (it was Dominican and Puertorrican but got popular here around 20 years ago, kind of the antecessor of Reggaeton) We Don't Talk About Bruno: Salsa (it is Latina in general, but most famous here by the music created in the city of Cali, and the actor who does Félix is a recognized salsa Colombian singer) The songs obviously have the "Disney" touch and their own progression, but I imagine Lin Manuel-Miranda seized the chance to add a little bit of Colombianity to each of them as well, trying to show the richness of our cultural diversity (which is also shown by the variety of characters from very different regions living together in the same town)

As the oldest of 16 grandkids, this film hit my heart in all the right spots. I associated with Luisa's pressure to hold everyone up as the oldest. Mirabel's love for her family is so relatable. You should have seen our pre Covid Thanksgivings. Basically weekend long slumber parties. I miss those.

The climax of We Don't Talk about Bruno is so well done. It could easily have been a mess with so many voices overlapping, but they distinguish them really well, so you can actually hear each line. This would have been very easy to screw up, but they didn't. Surface Pressure is also the song that convinced me to watch this movie and I have zero regrets.

i love the classic lin song where everyone sings overtop of each other like in "we dont talk about bruno" or "non-stop" or "96000" (from in the heights)

I enjoyed the songs, but the ending bothered me a little bit of the movie itself since it felt a little too personal for some of the moments (making me legit cry) and the way everyone (especially the grandmother) was just forgiven. But the songs are lovely!

Yes! You should definitely do a reaction video for the movie. The visuals alongside the music is just *chef's kiss*. Lin-Manuel Miranda worked on the music, and going off of his past works, it's no surprise that the music is amazing. The vocals are all amazing too. They just work together so well.

You mentioned how beautiful Abuela's voice is, and that's because her singing voice is done by Olga Merediz! She's best known for playing Abuela Claudia in both the Broadway and movie versions of In The Heights, and she is f***ing amazing, I adore her.

That part right after the scene where she dreams about being free of “the crushing weight of expectation” and she goes back to singing about the the pressure that will “never stop” hit me the hardest. That moment when you’ve been struggling with so much crap for so long that you’ve given up hope that you’ll ever make it through. That moment where you think, this is my new normal, stop dreaming of ever being happy again…

Surface Pressure is my favourite, not just because it's real, but artistically is beautiful and real in every way. From the visuals to the music all of it is perfect. Honestly the way this film uses music and the world/character intertwined is so artistically beautiful.

Encanto works a million times better in context, purely because of the building of the characters (the beauty and the brawn do no wrong) and then later hearing from that character's perspective, because it's so much more of a slap in the face hearing Luisa freak out about pressure after seeing her as this strong character id love to see your full watch-through :)

As the oldest of three: Luisa’s song always gets me, and I know she’s not the oldest but I feel like a lot of older siblings in general can relate to that feeling Edit: Isabella has one of my favorite parts in WDTAB, everyone else is singing their part and Isabella starts out like that but then the panic starts to set in and she’s just saying “im fine” over and over, I love this movies representation of anxiety and the need to please your family

For Mathew: Mirabel (the one who you said was ashamed of her gift) No, she does not have a gift and the rest of her family has a gift but the weird thing is that Abuela (grandma in Spanish) has no gift either so that’s funny but when Mirabel said Morning Abuelo you might’ve wondered why he was not there it’s because he died when Abuela was young not really young tho

Context: Encanto is about the Madrigals, a magic family living in a magic house in Columbia. Minus Mirabel, every person born into the family has a unique gift. Mirabel discovers the magic surrounding her family is in danger, and that she might be the only one who can save them. Abuela had triplets with her desceased husband, Pedro: Pepa: Her feelings affect the weather Julieta: Heals with her arepas Bruno: Sees the future Pepa married Felix and they have 3 kids: Dolores: Can hear “A pin drop from a mile away” Camilo: Shapeshifts (It is unknown if he can shapeshift into animals) Antonio: Can talk to and understand animals Julieta married Agustin and they have 3 kids: Isabela: makes flowers grow Luisa: Can lift a whole church like it’s nothing Mirabel: No gift
