Neville's Remembrall: What Did He Forget? - Harry Potter Theory

Hey everyone,
Welcome to another installment of Harry Potter Theory. In today’s video, we’re going to be discussing Neville Longbottom, a magical artefact known as a ‘remembrall’ and chapter 9 of the Philosopher’s Stone - The Midnight Duel. More specifically- we’re going to be diving in to what exactly a remembrall is, as well as Neville’s relationship with his own remembrall.
For those unaware, a Remembrall is a large magical marble-sized glass ball that contains smoke. The function of a ‘remembrall’ is in the name- as it serves as an indicator of whether or not you have forgotten something. It fills with red smoke when the owner has forgotten something, otherwise it’s clear. It also turns clear if the thing that was forgotten is remembered. They are somewhat readily available for purchase in the wizarding world, and they make the perfect gift for your absent minded friends. Now, who do we know that’s calamitous and forgetful? Why- young Neville Longbottom of course. Neville actually received one as a gift from his gran at the beginning of the 1991-1992 school year.
Neville’s Remembrall, as it happens, is actually the reason that Harry got the position of Seeker on the Gryffindor quidditch team. During their first flying lesson in Madam Hooch’s class, Neville injures himself and leaves his remembrall behind. Malfoy spots it immediately:
Draco Malfoy: "Look! It’s that stupid thing Longbottom’s gran sent him."
Harry Potter: "Give that here, Malfoy."
Draco Malfoy: "I think I’ll leave it somewhere for Longbottom to find - how about - up a tree?"
Harry Potter: "Give it here!"
Draco Malfoy: "Come and get it, Potter!"
After Draco took the remembrall, he threw it high up in to the air, thinking that it would land on the ground somewhere nearby and smash in to a thousand pieces. But boy was he wrong, as Harry Potter took this opportunity to flex his flying skills and save the remembrall from being broken. McGonagall, who saw the whole scenario transpire, was immediately convinced that Harry would make an excellent Seeker for the Gryffindor quidditch team.
In chapter 9 of the Philosopher’s Stone Neville explains the remembrall:
"'It’s a Remembrall!’ he explained. ‘Gran knows I forget things - this tells you if there’s something you’ve forgotten to do. Look, you hold it tight like this and if it turns red - oh…’ His face fell, because the Remembrall had suddenly glowed scarlet, ‘… you’ve forgotten something…’ "
Now that you know what a remembrall is, the next important question is: what did Neville forget?
It’s never actually revealed, in the book or the film (which coincidentally suggest different things), what Neville forgot, but we do have enough information to make some theories.
In the book, I think that it’s most likely that Neville forgot the password to the Gryffindor tower. Later on in the same chapter that the remembrall is mentioned, Harry, Ron and Hermione find Neville outside the tower. When he bumps in to them, he explains that he had forgotten the password:
"Thank goodness you found me! I've been out here for hours, I couldn't remember the new password to get in to bed."
The Remembrall was likely trying to remind him about the new password, but Neville forgot.
However, the film has a different answer to this question. If we go by the events of the film, the most obvious answer is that Neville forgot to put on his robe. We can make this assumption because, in the scenes that contain the remembrall, he is the only student not wearing a robe.

One of my favourite parts of the books is in the Deathly Hallows, during the Battle of Hogwarts, where Neville's Gran asks Harry if he's seen her Grandson. Upon being told by Harry that he is fighting. “Naturally. Excuse me, I must go and assist him". He got there in the end.

that bit was awesome. there you really see that while she was strict she really loved Neville and was proud of him. I also love the scene with neville's new wand in HBP. Neville tells how his gran bought him a new wand. "I thought Gran would kill me, you know for destroying dad's wand but she said she never was prouder of me and got me a new one:" or something along these lines. Don't have the book here right now

@@Metalhammer1993 that was always a key point for Neville, imo. He wasn't incompetent at magic. He was actually pretty talented. Seeing as he was using someone else's wand his whole student life, it was only natural that he not be able to work the best magic. According to Olivander, each wizard must be chosen by his wand to perform to the best of their abilities. And what happened with Neville? He got a new wand, became much more adept at magic, led a resistance for a whole year and survived a war that veterans of the last war and incredibly powerful wizards like Lupin couldn't.

I always thought it was a jab at how paradoxical the item was since Neville’s line in the film immediately after it turned red was “I can’t remember what I’ve forgotten,” suggesting that it would always be red since a holder would always have forgotten what exactly they forgot.

The remembrall is designed to make you realize that you forgot something and help you finding out what that was. If Neville would have checked the remembrall when he was standing in front of the tower's entrance, realizing he forgot the password, the remembrall would have turned clear immediately.

@@Timberwolf69 I disagree, because that assumes he hasn't forgotten anything else. This is impossible because everyone in constantly forgetting stuff: information you learned in class, memories from your childhood days or even from a few weeks ago, a conversation you had yesterday, basic things when you go shopping... If you take this into account, it's impossible for a remembrall to work at all like it's intended to work, because it would never clear up at all. If anything, this item would drive people towards absolute madness. It's actually a terrifying object if you think about it.

@@forn8473 I agree. If it would work like you describe it, it would be a pretty useless device - except you're up to torture someone. But I think it has some sort of filter. My guess would be that each of these devices can be fitted with a very specific task, like 'always remember to wear your robe'. Still, there is a lot of room for improvement.

@@forn8473 That's where I think is quite a bit of room for improvement. The remembrall doesn't tell you what you have forgotten. Usually not that big of a problem if you created it yourself. But as Neville's was sent him by his grandma, it is most likely that she made this one. If he had made it himself, we would most likely be able to find out what he had forgotten.

If you look closely Neville has his robe right next to him on the bench and there are several other students in the great hall without a robe so i think it's more likely that it is the password.

Additionally, if you look at the wideangle when the great hall is shown from above you can see the robe sitting next to him on the bench! So he just slipped out of it for breakfast but has it with him :)

The assumption of what Neville might have forgotten in the film is wrong. In a total camera shot of the Great Hall, you can see that he is not the only one sitting there without a cloak. When the owl post arrives, you see that Neville has his cloak right next to him on the bench. So Neville just put it down next to him like many others. The rumor is therefore disproved. The password thing is very plausible, though, since forgetting the password happens in the same chapter.

I believe it is Better to Watch the movies first. Then read the books. The movies are very good, some are excellent. However, there is so much more that may be put in a book. That said, the visuals in movies allow a different form of telling the story. Very Talented actors and actresses added dimensions to the characters and the stories. I believe JK Rowling improved her craft, and the series by watching and participating in the first couple of movies! I was an adult when the books came out. I heard about the first books just before it was announced they were making the first movie. I knew they are targeted at a YA audience, however, it was clear they were becoming a cultural touchstone. I chose to wait until I had seen each movie, before I read the book of the same title. I enjoyed both more that way.

But having the movies first, when I read the books after, it felt like I was doing a deeper dive into the world and that there was so much more to learn. Fun fact: in the Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone game for PC, the scene where Neville introduced his Rememberall for the first time is right before class. He says that "it's telling me we have Herbology soon", indicating that the thing he forgot was either which class was next, or that there was class soon at all. The next thing he says is: "oh, I almost forgot, watch out for Draco Malfoy" while still holding the Rememberall...could the ball also prevent the holder from forgetting their current thoughts as well? 🤔

Yes for Neville he has always forgotten his Robe or Password..... but as time goes on and he gets embarrassed enough over that problem and his forgetfulness of password almost gets Harry killed. Neville LEARNS the importance and no longer forgets those two things!!

I’ve asked this before, but can you explain the timeline of what happened with the prophecy and Peter defecting? So far I have: Early 1980- prophecy July 1980- Harry was born. Peter defected around this time give or take a couple months. Late summer/Fall/winter 1980- Snape told Dumbledore that Voldemort was after the Potters Fall 1981- Dumbledore offered to be Secret Keeper. Lily and James said no and that they wanted Sirius to do it. Sirius said Peter should be Secret Keeper. Last week of October 1981- the Fidelius charm was cast with Peter as Secret Keeper. Peter told Voldemort where the Potters were hiding. Halloween 1981- Voldemort killed Lily and James. Why did it take Voldemort a year to track down the Potters?

A very silly thing I've always wondered about is whether Harry's firebolt performed normally after it's tale got caught on fire by the Horntail or not? Plenty of students aren’t wearing their robes though if you look carefully during the scene when the owls are dropping the mail, you can see at least 3 other students at the other end who just have jumpers on like Neville. Also directly behind him you can see a student as well without them so I don’t think this is it.

For a long time, I believed he had forgotten his robe, but after reading some other comments, I rewatched the scene and there are other students without robes. Therefore, I have to agree that he must have forgotten the password to the Gryffindor common room as implied in the book.

did he ever get it back after malfoy? i don't remember that he was given it back (but i think he probably was), and he only remarks that he had lost it. 3:32 he isn't the only student without a robe on, the first image that you showed of him showed that another student in the background was in grey not black. 0:45 next to his right shoulder. it still could have been the robe that he forgot, but he isn't the only one without a robe.

well, im suffering of a mandela's effect. as I remember, really clearly, harry potter after he got the remembrall from Draco, he kept it. and in the scene with Prof Quirrel on the room, when the professor Quirrel ask him what harry sees on the mirror, Harry look at the mirror, put his hand on his pocket, and pull out the Remembrall, and when he looks at the mirror, he sees the Philosopher stone, and when he looks back, the Remembrall is already gone, and he has the Philosopher stone. And I'm the only one remembering this scene, it came out to me, because yesterday I did watch Harry potter with my wife, and it doesnt show the Remembrall, it goes straight showing the Philosopher stone, and I was like WTF..?????? ITS CRYSTAL CLEAR THE Remembrall on his pocket changing to the stone. geez. what's happening...?? u.u

Has anyone pondered that the reason Neville has such a poor memory could be that he witnessed his parents being tortured to insanity as a baby, and some adult wizard who found him Obliviated him so he would not have to remember it in later life, which permanently damaged his memory? There isn't any mention of this in the books or anything, but it seems like a natural idea to ponder and I've never seen it brought up anywhere.

He's literally not the only person in the scene without a robe. 20 seconds in you see a wide shot and you can count several without it. It's not the Robe obviously.
