Mazda cars are so classy, their designs will stand the test of time years from now. Can't say the same for some of the competition that tried too hard to be different.

My wife and I bought the first edition way back in late 2012 and we still have it 92,000 miles later. Prior to that we had the Mazda CX-7 (which sold us on the Mazda experience). Our Cx-5 is getting long in the tooth now and we're hoping to change vehicle later this year. I recently drove a 2022 CX-5 courtesy vehicle from our local dealership for a couple of days while ours 2013 model was getting serviced. It was the 2.5L with 186HP so 30HP and 30lbs torque better than ours. So, I got a good comparison of how the CX-5 has evolved. First thing I would say about Mazda having owned them going back to 2006 is in my experience they have great build quality and reliability. We've kept up all the maintenance services over the years and our CX-5 has never faltered once in nearly ten years of ownership. They are great daily driver for people that don't need the space of a midsize or large SUV. As Andrea pointed out the sporty handling and easy maneuverability are strong points. The steering is well weighted and it's easy to know where the wheels are pointed. If you like that overly boasted light steering feel look elsewhere. Some improvements and differences I noticed with the 2022 CX-5 courtesy vehicle over our 2013 are; The extra 30HP in the newer base engine is considerably peppier than our 155HP engine so the 2.5L with the 256HP must feel decently quick. The steering wheel leather is softer and more premium feeling, the seats are much better cushioned and more supportive, the material quality throughout the cabin and especially around the dash with the large info screen and more modern center console is a lot nicer. There's a lot less wind and road noise compared to ours and although the suspension is on the firm side with the newer models it's much smoother over bumps, road imperfections and expansion joints than our 2013 model. Although our CX-5 has the outdated touchscreen I still would rather a touchscreen or at least the choice of it and a rotary knob to use the info screen. The trunk space in the newer models is also noticeable smaller than the first generation. Overall if you enjoy driving, want a bit of sporty handling in a very reliable and upscale feeling small SUV it's hard to beat the CX-5. They may be a small company but with the CX-50, CX-70 and CX-90 on the way Mazda are continuing to put out very competitive vehicles. I just wish the new future models were coming out sooner!

Just wanted to thank Zack and Andrea for this channel. We bought a compact SUV in early January and used Motormouth and one other great KZbin reviewer to narrow down our search. Especially enjoy their different viewpoints. We got a 2021 CX-5 Carbon Edition Turbo. Didnt get a '22 because in the US they dont offer the Turbo except in the highest trim lines, so we were able to get the Turbo for around $33k (US). That was important to my wife - she loved the way to the Mazda drove and the power of the Turbo, and that it was an affordable option to a X1/X3 or Q5. It seems with this review perhaps Andrea and Zack arent quite as positive on the CX5 for '22 as they were for '21? Is that because this generation is showing some age, or upgraded competition from the Tucson and the Rogue? Thank you Motormouth - really enjoy watching your reviews.

I absolutely disagree with you. If Mazda is the boutique hotel the RAV4 is the Holiday Inn. I have driven both vehicles extensively. The RAV4 feels very cheap. The glass is thin and cracks very easily. I cannot express how noisy it is. Mazda feels expensive , quiet and composed. For build quality the Mazda takes the trophy; it is built in Japan! The RAV4 is built in North America. Even the Lexus NX is built in North America… and I am sure the NX is noisier than the Mazda as well. Some of the most unreliable vehicles built by Toyota used the 2.4L engine in the past.

Me too, I ended up leasing the Mazda CX-5 Premium Plus Package in the Soul Red Crystal metallic with the Parchment Leather seats. I really wanted the Turbo Signature for the power, beepers and navigation but I did not like the dark brown seats and the Turbo with the signature had black seats. Hence, I decided I just wanted a more airy feeling in interior which will make me happy. Hopefully in 3 years after my lease ends, the Turbo will allow a lighter Parchment Leather Option.

I love everything about the cx5 & almost purchased one last month until I found out the cylinders deactivation turned me off. Why would a 4 cylinder engine has to have the feature?
@shibaspeed2 жыл бұрын
I heard the turbo models don’t have cylinder deactivation, but I could be wrong
@DJPleasureSeekingMissle2 жыл бұрын
It’s not present in the turbo models and I believe it’s only present in the upper trims of the non-turbo models. Mazda had a few complaints so they honestly might have abandoned that feature. Check the spec sheet if you go look at one.

The used car prices are insane. A 3 year old Forester with 60k kms is the same price as this brand new mid trim CX-5. How does that make any sense? That Forester should be under $20k.

I think the Subaru Outback with the turbo engine offers greater value for money as compare to this as it has more room , more power and accessories f you don’t mind the CVT it has great all way driving dynamics. Plus the regular gas it uses saves a lot on the gas station and the crazy resale value is just a plus.
@Alboravin2 жыл бұрын
The CX-5 can also run on regular gas.

What happened to the price of the turbo engine option.....looks like it is now an over 5,000 USD option on both the CX-5 and the CX-50!!!! What they did is eliminate the possibility of getting the Turbo Engine on any of the less optioned models such as the Carbon Edition....so essentially the 2.5 Turbo = 2.5 S Premium Plus with a Turbo engine. From that perspective I suppose it is a 2,450 USD option for the engine upgrade.

The 2022 refresh was just right! Infotainment system very responsive…I love the knob and no touchscreen to reach for…and constantly clean…it’s interior luxury goes head to head with Lexus NX, Audi, Volvo, BMW, MB and the exterior of the Signature is sweet! Looks and feels amazing to drive and sophisticated. I cancelled my Lexus NX order and got the signature model. If you want a utilitarian feel and need cargo space get a RAV, Honda but if you want a fun fun fun car to drive…get a CX5 and be amazed by quality and overall value. Had a RAV for ten years and loved it…but driving the CX5 blew me away and I’m all about the interior luxury! It’s fun…and luxurious and priced for the masses. What’s not to like?
@annv43382 жыл бұрын
Totally agree with you. My last two vehicles were RAV4s and I really did like them but I love my 2022 CX 5 carbon edition. Not as much room but the great interior and much quieter ride make up for that. I don’t miss the touch screen at all.
