@John Dough you make me laugh. The Ridgeline is a truck, like it or not. It may not be as capable off-road or tow as much as other trucks, but I guarantee you that it'll still be going strong long after the others have found a spot in the junkyard, with the exception of Toyota trucks. Besides, the majority of people that buy trucks don't actually do any towing or off-roading, it just makes them feel good knowing that they can if they ever needed to, which, like I said, they won't. Crap on the Ridgeline if you must, just don't complain when your truck takes a dump on you long before the Ridgeline craps out on its owners.

@John Dough do you have any clue what you’re talking about? The ridgeline can tow 5k pounds, if you tow less than 5k name a vehicle that would be more practical, 24-25mpg on the highway, drives like a car etc.
@pm270x3 жыл бұрын
The Ridgeline comes standard with Tri-Zone Climate Control to accommodate rear-seated passengers. I believe the Gladiator is the only other midsized-pickup to offer that feature. Something to consider for parents who pickup kids from daycare or vacation regularly with their pickup. The Ridgeline also uses stadium seating for the rear-seat to remove motion sickness. The rear seating is positioned higher than front seats, which also helps taller riders sit more comfortably. The RTL-E trim and above has the gloss infotainment screen. The Ridgeline is the only midsized-pickup that’s built standard with a full towing package ready for 5k lbs. All other midsized-pickups come standard with a 2k lbs tow from bumper, and then up-charge available tow packages.

@@wornoutwasd8567 Kelly Blue Book says my 2020 Ridgeline RTL-E has a Fair Market Value of $39,636 through $43,095 ($41,366 averaged). I’m the original owner. It had a list price around $42k and we negotiated down to $38k. I really don’t have any issue with a vehicle that’s appreciating in value from what I paid with the current marketplace’s chip shortage. Otherwise, 2020 MSRP of $42k up to 2022 MSRP of $45k now, is also good appreciation. The Ridgeline doesn’t have any issues with rusting. The 3.5L SOHC VTEC engine has a long history of reliability and low maintenance costs. The German ZF 9-speed transaxle is extremely reliable. The interior doesn’t have any history of fading from sun exposure. The Tonneau tri-panel solid bed cover is the only recall that I’ve had to date, which only involved additional straps between panels for users who neglected to properly fasten it down before driving off. The Ridgeline doesn’t currently have the high costs of maintenance on turbo chargers, GDI fuel dilution, nor high labor for diesel mechanics. It also has one of the best midsized-pickup crash test ratings, which keeps insurance premiums lower as well. Automotive Loyalty Awards from IHS Markit recognize manufacturers for superior performance in owner retention. The Ridgeline has been one of the most retained vehicles, which keeps value steady and reliable. The Ridgeline and Tacoma are retaining their customers the best. Gladiator is also building a similar reputation as a Wrangler counterpart. It’s the Ranger, Colorado, Canyon, and Frontier users that are doing the most trade-ins between one another, for the midsized-pickups.
@pm270x2 жыл бұрын
@John Doe the biggest advantage is payload capacity. Depending on the model year and trim level, it gets between 1,477 lbs. and 1,583 lbs. which gives it a (3/4 ton) payload capacity. When the Ridgeline originally launched, its payload capacity was best-in-class for the midsized-pickup market. The competition have only recently completed against the Ridgeline’s payload capability. Unlike true unibodies, the Ridgeline, Pilot, and Passport has a frame welded within the unibody. Most off-road suspension packages drop payload capacity below 1k lbs (1/2 ton) and towing typically drops to 4k lbs. So functionality gain in one area is lost in another when going aftermarket. The Jeep Gladiator with Overland trim and Toyota Tacoma with TRD Pro trim are the best middle ground for maintaining reasonable off-road capability without losing too much towing or payload capability, while remaining reasonably priced. On paper, the Ford Ranger with FX4 trim and GMC Canyon with AT4 trim (Chevy Colorado with Z71 trim) appear to also provide a reasonable compromise of payload, towing, and off-road capability for pricing; but their 4x4 systems aren’t particularly impressive but just there for the sake of being there. The ZR2 Bison, Tremor, and Raptor aren’t reasonably priced considering the consistent costs of repairs for a true off-road’er. Most 4x4 systems aren’t asphalt compatible for long commutes in snowy or icy conditions between intermittently dry and slick conditions. Also, most 4x4 systems don’t recommend towing while the 4x4 system is engaged. This is where Ridgeline’s iVTM4 is vastly superior with dynamic torque vectoring maintaining 70% torque on axles or wheels with high friction and 30% torque on axles or wheels with low friction. That’s a best-in-class 40% torque spread. Jeep’s traditional and well known Quadra-Trac I® 4x4 system only offers a 4% torque spread with 48% front axle torque and 52% rear axle torque. Ridgeline’s iVTM4 provides on-demand AWD (4 wheel limited-slip wet clutch) traction control while towing, light off-roading, commuting in snow/ice without sacrificing payload capacity and or towing capacity. The TrailSport Edition should be available in a couple of years for the Ridgeline to start overlanding (not rock crawling). Honda dealerships are teamed with JSport Performance Accessories to provide lift kits, skid plates, and taller tires that won’t void the manufacturer’s OEM warranty; for those that won’t wait for the TrailSport Edition. Considering the Ridgeline is only a 2nd generation model, it’s actually doing very well as an entry into the midsized-pickup marketplace. The Toyota Tacoma is a rebadged 1969 Helux, by comparison with 65+ years of development history. In high school, I drove a 1st generation 1983 Ford Ranger XLT long-bed with a Lima 2.3L I4. The Ford Ranger (Mazda B-Series) have plenty of generations on the Ridgeline as well. If you aren’t running a farm, operating a construction trade, towing daily, or rock crawling monthly the Ridgeline is most likely the most cost effective option available for running a household with children. Off-road the Ridgeline rallies like an ARCA dirt track racer; the steering is tight and goes where you want it; it’s exceptionally practical for family trips due to an oversized cab and open concept storage below the rear bench; the huge in-bed trunk basically replaces the need for a crossover truck-box against the cab (would consume 1+” of bed capacity), it remains competitive in fuel mileage; the manual paddle-shifting in Sport Mode is fun as hell on 180° switchbacks through the Smokey Mountains and is also practical for towing and heavy payloads; the engine and transaxle are very reliable, I didn’t have to buy a towing package since that’s standard on all Ridgeline trims; and etc…
@pm270x2 жыл бұрын
@John Dough the Tacoma/Hilux established its own production line for a full 65+ years. The Ridgeline has never been on an independent production line. Honda is working with General Motors to lease and occupy those abandoned GM factories to spread out model specific production lines. Right now, I believe the Ridgeline is produced last at Lincoln, Alabama after the Odyssey, Pilot and Passport go through the production line which reduces Ridgeline’s available production numbers. The Pilot dominates the production line for now. I think the Ridgeline would become a much different vehicle if it wasn’t restricted to a shared platform production line. The more important statistic is that Ridgeline’s have exceptional retention. So the Ridgeline has a promising future. Honda overwhelmingly dominates off-road racing with their super cross, motor cross, ATV, and enduro divisions. A little more leeway is all Honda’s engineers need to build another dominant off-road product offering, but for now we have to settle for what the Ridgeline is today, the most family friendly midsized-pickup. I’ll also continue to use my pickup to haul the additional 500 lbs of payload that a Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro isn’t rated to handle. I believe the Toyota Tacoma has moved their production line to Mexico to allow their San Antonio, TX plant more capacity to expand the production of the Tundra. It’ll be interesting to see if the quality controls in Mexico keep the Tacoma as reliable as their previous US built model years.

I had a 19 RL sport for three yrs (company car) and just ordered a new 23 RTL-E for the family. I've had 10+ trucks over the years too. To be very open... before having a RL I was not all that impressed. Never even test drove one as I didn't consider it a "truck". (It was a company car and my cost was low and is why I got it) But having put 50K miles on one and in all kinds of weather, I'm must say we are very impressed. So impressed that we just ordered a loaded one for use as our main family vehicle. The things that surprised me the most: 1. MPG On 1000+ mile freeway trips (Oh, Tx, Fla) it averages right at 31mpg w/three adults and the bed full of luggage. The 50k mile average was about 23.5mpg (maybe 75% local and 25% freeway) 2. The trunk in the bed is more useful than you might think. And its BIG too. We use it every single day. Groceries, tools, general stuff. The only and rare times that its a pain is on a long road trip where the bed is full of stuff. (can't open the lid unless you take 1/2 the stuff out of the bed). But that's maybe 1 or 2 times a yr so it's no biggie. 3. The Audio system is pretty good. SUB does very well. 4. Its VERY comfortable. Seats are semi-firm and in 50k miles they were excellent. It has ANC and the cabin is quiet. Even on non-stop 1000+ mile trips (18hrs of non-stop driving) you never get saddle sore. 5. It brakes, handles, and when you rev it out it performs very well. (I had the 6 speed auto but this new one has the 9sp) 6. Visibility is very good. Much better than a sedan and I think even better than a comparable SUV. 7. Tailgate. We almost always opened it sideways. It does have a long swing radius. So when backing in.. you have to give a little thought to the car or wall behind you. CONS: Not many. A. We had the cloth seats which were a pain to get cat hair out of. They also got a bit dirty and I had to do a super clean on them before I turned then in. B. We drove in in the salt / snow. I was very surprised the lugnuts got rusty during the first few times we drove in the salt. Nothing else on the RL got corrosion though. Weird C. I had the Honda hard bed cover. It was ok but I wound up removing it about 3-4 times per yr to haul something sizable. On road trips it was awesome as its lockable. I'm on the fence if I should get it on the new 23 model or not. I need to look at the aftermarket ones. D. The door panels are TALL and flat. We got a few door dings in parking lots. IMO Honda could toughen up the door panels or maybe use plastic ones.

@@phild9813 It is not as deep, but that can be both an asset and liability. The raised bed floor allows for the trunk and spare tire compartment. It makes reaching over the bed sides to grab cargo a bit easier. Being a pickup, the sky is literally the limit for loading cargo, but that shallow bed does make having a bed cover a little less convenient as I have confirmed with mine. @life phobic So, I am a data analyst for a $3bn in assets credit union that finances about $500 million in new and used auto loans in WI, MI, MN, and IL annually. My job is to make sure we know what people are buying. Fun facts: over 50% of the mid-sized trucks we finance DO NOT HAVE THE MAX TOW PACKAGES! This means that the Honda can out-tow 50% of the mid-sized trucks sold up here in the snow belt, as without that package most of the mid-sized trucks have less than 5000lbs of towing (Colorado 3500, Tacoma 3500, Frontier 3790). Even more interesting, the most popular F150 trim (here and in the US in general) is the XL with the 3.3l engine, without the optional 3.73 axle (stock is 3.55 axle). This configuration of F150 maxes towing at 5000lbs and 1700lbs payload. Given these are the way people are buying them, I would say the Honda is absolutely capable of meeting or exceeding those buyers' needs, as they so far are being served buy even less capable to equally capable trucks. Don't look at the max numbers quoted, or the maxed-out ones sent to reviewers, look at the actual market data. Now, credit where it is due, the majority of the new Rangers sold up here do have the tow package. Now, objective reality. Up here in the snowbelt, most people have AWD or 4x4 in their vehicles, due to our lovely winters (come up to snowy Houghton MI, where the annual snowfall is over 200 inches and it already snowed last week). That said, the vast majority of 4x4 owners do not go any further off-road than the AWD folks up here do. We are not up here rock crawling in the snowy midwest. I have a friend who admitted that he has not actually used the 4wd in his last 2 trucks for off-road/mud, but rather just to get out of his driveway in the morning before the plows come there, which his wife's AWD Chevy Traverse does just as well as his truck. It is easy to say "a truck must off-road and tow" but he reality is that most truck owners do neither, or at least do not do so to a degree to require the capability level they are buying. The truth is, you don't need a TRD Pro to go to the grocery store and drive down a snowy gravel road.

I grew up in Northern Alberta and have been driving in harsh winter conditions since the mid-1970s. I have driven many, many highway miles in the Cdn prairies, Rockies and the mountainous interior of BC. 7.6 vs 9.4 inches of underbody height is a lot less important than the experience and skill of the driver, a good set of winter tires, and how well the roads are plowed. An inch or two more of clearance under the chassis isn't going to make a lick of difference in conditions of extreme ice or in a low-visibility blizzard or whiteout. No sensible motorist dives in deep snow if they can possibly help it. Sure, sometimes you have no choice, but if you have with 5-6 inches or more of snow on the road, the sensible thing to do is to stay off the road altogether and wait for the road crews to come. Even if you are well-equipped in a good 4-wheel drive vehicle, why expose yourself to the inevitable risk of sharing snowy roads with inexperienced drivers on inadequate summer or all-season tires? Are you talking about off-roading in deep snow? How many people actually do that? Almost none, I'd say.

Who has ever said when buying a new vehicle, "Sheesh, am I going to have to replace the timing belt at some point?" I love my Taco, but… the Ridgeline does carry 500 lbs more payload and is way better to drive on the daily. Sure it won’t keep up off road, but that doesn’t matter to everyone.
@NoelKunz3 жыл бұрын
this is the boat I'm on. Need a truck to lug equipment for what I do for work, and need something to drive daily and carry people, but I won't be towing anything or going off road. I happen to like the features better, so it's a better choice for ME, even though the Frontier is also amazing. I'm just saying this as to not discount the Honda for being unibody. It's the better fit for what I need and like.
@jg82633 жыл бұрын
Exactly, in fact that payload is the dirty secret of the Tacoma. Let's look at a 4000lb trailer (a ski boat in the mid 20 foot range or a 18-20 foot camper would fit this category, or a couple UTVs on a trailer) with 15% tongue weight and a 200lb driver, what I would say is a fairly typical towing scenario for a mid-sized truck. So you have 600lbs of tongue weight and 200lbs of driver to subtract from your payload. So Taco is 1100-800 for 300lbs of remaining capability for passengers and cargo, whereas the Honda is 1600-800 for 800lbs of remaining capability. So the Honda could take my wife and 2 kids along for the ride with capability to spare, the Tacoma could not (I would have to leave 1 person behind). So yes, with just a single driver and no passengers, the Tacoma could (in specific configurations) out-tow the Honda, but in a real life scenario, the Honda is actually better at being a truck. Of course, this leaves out the fact that the Honda is the only mid-sized truck that can haul 4x8 material flat in the bed. Not to be a conspiracy theorist, but notice the only mid-size that can do this.... is from the one company that doesn't offer a half-ton model to "upgrade" you to.

Truck bed audio with lockable cargo space - 2022 version of the Ridgeline is a more aggressive good looking truck. Which one will get me around in increment weather more safely? Which one can I drive down dirt/gravel roads with 6-8 inches of unplowed snow without getting stuck? Can I get across a muddy field reliably? These are the questions that really matter for a mid sized pickup.

They did cover the points you mention. They're not going to do much more on a press tour. Comfortable to drive - the Honda as 4 wheel independent suspension, unibody construction. Reliability - Nissan Gas trucks generally get high mileage with some easy repairs, Honda has a penchant for reliability but reliability is not really something that can be judged on a new car review. Towing - the frontier is set up slightly better for towing. Inclement weather - the one you buy good tires for, but the AWD on the Honda gives a slight edge. 4x4 stuff - Frontier with better tires because low range and rear locker.

If I was going 4x4ing all the time I'd get the Nissan sure but for an everyday vehicle that will easily get me to a trailhead or the lake, I'd take the Ridgeline all day. In the end, it all depends on what you need. And Unibody is NOT the end of the world, They've been making unibody for decades now. They have all the kinks and limitations figured out. As long as the Honda meets your payload and towing needs I say go for it. I know I'd kill to have that lockable storage box in my truck bed. Just bought the little old lady from Pasadena’s Honda Ridgeline, 2020 RTL-E, only 17680 miles. Tried Frontier, Tacoma all great trucks just they were a little to small cab wise, not a big guy but like my room plus got my dog which weighed heavy on my decision, he fit better in Ridgeline. My opinion the truck must fit the life style, no bad choices out there. Enjoy what ever God blessed you with. BTW at 65 mph was getting 27 to 29 mpg! Heck yeah!

Spot-on analysis. The next edition of the Toyota Tacoma had better be a good one, because Nissan just fired a major shot off their bow. I don't think the Ridgeline would necessarily appeal to many Tacoma buyers due to the Tacoma's offroad abilities, but they definitely have something to worry about from Nissan. A lot of people who wouldn't think of owning a Ridgeline might find it actually more than meets 98% of their needs and is in a more fuel efficient and comfortable package to boot.

I have filled the bed with Mulch and the truck only squatted a bit and there is enough torque to not feel a difference.The only think I did was installing a leveling kit on mine (Much better leveled). I’m a frontier owner so I am biased. And as in many of these comments…buy what you want for your needs. That’s all. I personally will put a small lift on the new frontier for bigger tires bringing clearance height and a little bit of articulation for traction. I do trails etc. but honestly considered a ridge line as 90% of my mileage is commuting on pavement.

I think the clear winner is the Nissan Frontier in many ways. Ridgeline needs some upgrades to compete the Nissan.
@rondail56753 жыл бұрын
I like them both. They both have some missing features. I have a Ridgeline because it does ride/drive like a SUV. But if I could do some off-roading, I would pick the Frontier. Snow is my only obstacle. Ridgeline AWD is one of the best.

The reason the steering is heavier on the Frontier is because it's hydraulic power steering whereas the Ridgeline (and most modern vehicles) have electric power steering.
@kenhoward35123 жыл бұрын
Come on now: Hydraulic power steering - like electric - can be any weight it's designed to be. Are you old enough to remember when big American cars typically had steering wheels you could easily turn with one finger lightly on the wheel, even standing still?
@ScarletKnightmare3 жыл бұрын
@@kenhoward3512 I am, and thank you for your good point. I should've clarified that effort needs to be added to electric power steering whereas, if anything, it needs to be removed from hydraulic systems e.g. '74 Cadillac. Only Mazda to my knowledge is placing emphasis on steering weight in their electric systems. Other brands do give you an option via "sport mode" or whatever they may call it to indicate user-selectable preference.

The Ridgeline is a real truck. Everybody says it is a unibody. Which it is; however it also has a fully boxed latter frame underneath with seven crossmembers. Body-on-frame is more resistant to long-term fatigue, impacts, and twisting forces. All important factors for the more serious off-roader, especially rock crawlers. The modular build of body on-frame also makes it easier to replace damaged parts.

Frontier all the way, 2 mpg isn't enough of a different to make up for the other compromises. The Ridgeline may be able to meet 95% of my needs, but the Frontier would meet 99% for a lower initial cost (for a package I would be happy with). And it would take years before that slight difference in MPG made any meaningful impact financially. "How much truck do I really need?" Is a pretty ineffective argument when the lesser truck costs more.
