Former Naval Aviator here: to answer Violet's question, normally all launches are done before any landings start. The previous "cycle" of aircraft hold overhead at pre-determined altitudes while the next cycle launches. Once the Air Boss tells "Paddles" (the LSOs) that the deck is ready to receive aircraft, they will turn on the lens, which is the signal for the lowest holding aircraft to come land. Then everyone in the "stack" will descend 1000ft to their next lower altitude and repeat until everyone's aboard. The beautiful thing about it is a good Airwing (and most are) can do the entire launch and recovery completely radio silent on the Tower freq. It's possible to launch on Cats 1 and 2 while planes are landing, but this is usually reserved for Carrier Qualification (CQ) when there are only a handful of aircraft operating.
@wiwa23
@wiwa23 13 күн бұрын
Thanks for the provided info. Please allow me to ask an additional question: Does the first plane to commence is pro active on the readiness of the deck in a way that they start commencing the moment the waist cats are being launched/wrapped and so the actual clearing of the deck is done during the +/- 4m30s it takes from commencing at position 3 untill in the groove? Or does the first plane waits for commencing until the LSO has put the lights of the lens on?
@edwardlittle5686
@edwardlittle5686 12 күн бұрын
@@wiwa23 The first plane (probably a division of 4) waits for the LSO to turn on the lens. But when that first plane "breaks the deck" it doesn't take more than 1 min to land. Also, an experienced pilot will see what's happening with the launch, and will anticipate when the lens should turn on. He will adjust his holding pattern to be arriving behind the ship right as the lens comes on. There's no wasted time.
@wiwa23
@wiwa23 11 күн бұрын
@@edwardlittle5686 thanks for the reply. However I can't understand how it could only take 1 minute from breaking the deck untill in the groove. Breaking the deck at position 3, descending to 800ft and turning towards the boat, doing overhead break, 1 lap in the pattern, ending up in the groove. That would always take more than 1 minute, right? I would roughly count 4m30s for this. Or did you mean the time from commencing at position 3 untill Initial? I can imagine that to be 1 minute.
@vf24renegade23
@vf24renegade23 10 күн бұрын
Yep, and the landed aircraft would temporary park forward of the island or as he said for carrier quals could be directed to the forward cats for launch.
@edwardlittle5686
@edwardlittle5686 10 күн бұрын
@@wiwa23 "breaking the deck" doesn't mean descending out of the stack at position 3. I meant crossing the stern at 800ft and ready to break. The Lead will break NLT the bow and be on deck w/in 1 minute. Here's maybe what you're missing: you don't have to descend out of the stack at position 3 only. It's anywhere between position 3 and the break, and it's only 1200ft, so it happens fast. Nor does the Lead have to extend downwind any given distance (like I've seen on some public domain sites); he has total autonomy to turn into the initial whenever he wants. And since that experienced division lead will anticipate the lens coming on, he will be between position3 and the initial when it does. I'm describing best case here, but you'd be surprised how good our Aviators get at this.

You are sitting in front of your nose wheel and the center of rotation is behind that. It's always going to feel a like you are turning late. They can make the pilot feel like they are over the side and still get the turn in. Afraid of heights? You are now.

actually its not FAA reg that we HAVE to follow the ground crew. if i (PIC) feel like i cant do something or dont think i can do what they are asking i dont have to. ive done it many times. its up to the Pilot in Command for the safety of the plane. military regs are different.

yeah you can loose your license for it if your decision is found to be wrong. real story. pilot did not follow the ground marshlers signals or the follow me truck blew the windows out on a terminal and that pilot is no longer flying. so you might want to double check that.

So two notions: 1) "Shuffle/shuttle"??? They can adjust plane-butts on the carrier in real life? How is that possible? 2) As damned impressive as this is, I'm mortified that it reduces (word chosen carefully) chances of GR running over a ground crew. I take great glee from such grossly inappropriate events. (Don't judge ... hmm ... or do judge 😛) Bad AI !!

FAA regulations to follow the flight deck crew? No, the FAA has nothing to do with this. 🙂 Nice to see they have the final checkers braced on the deck with their thumbs up! Plane captains (in brown) wouldn't be directing aircraft, only aircraft directors in yellow, so that's something they need to fix.
