Halo 5 would’ve been a hell of a lot better if the didact had returned he was an actually good villain that had motives and a good backstory in my opinion he was just as good a villain as the grave mind and the prophets. Halo 5 didn’t have a good villain like warden eternal was literally just a stupid robot and cortana shouldn’t have been evil.

They would have just replaced with a new character, which they pretty much did with Locke. Either way: Halo 4/TFA - Not bad, played it a little bit safe, set into motion some of the more unpopular directions of the narrative, even if decent on it's own Halo 5/TLJ - Single-handedly broke the franchise, nuked the story to oblivion, destroys one of if not the most beloved characters in the respective franchise Infinite/TROS - Who knows? Maybe The Didact will come back again out of nowhere, maybe it will be the Gravemind and Cortana will be revealed as his pawn the entire time. Maybe they'll kill Chief off and double down on Locke being the "true" hero, just like they killed off all of the Skywalkers and had Rey assume their legacy when she had no business doing so. Yeah, not really much to look forward to there.

I had the idea that that hunter is a "improvised" hunter made with Preomethian/Forerunner tech, similar how you see a hunter sort of awake in one of the missions of Halo 5 but instead of it becoming alive it would be like the lekgolo just grabbed a bunch of Forerunner/Promethian things and just made that unfinished hunter. Hunters from Halo: Nightfall, that could dissolve into a mass of worms and reform whenever they pleased. And...this concept art confirms what I thought for a while: who let the Japanese (fanboys) take over Halo? Ahem. Anyway, I also spotted concept art for the Master Chief in what may be upgraded Forerunner armour--which clearly got dropped from Halo 4, along with 343 Guilty Spark. I like the hypothesis you gave, as it makes a whole lot of sense. But there's too many dropped or read-all-about-it-elsewhere plot threads in Halo games now--from humanity being the Forerunners originally, to the Hunt the Truth campaign (and the former I love Bees campaign) to the Spirit of Fire Flood infestation (resolved in a comic) to 343 Guilty Spark having survived the destruction of the Ark (read all about it!) to Black Team dying off-panel in a comic to the Didact... I'm not entirely sure how the Master Chief going after Medicant Bias would be considered as him turning against the UNSC. It _would_ make a heck of a lot more sense than 'Hey, Blue Team, whom we've never seen in a video game before, I just had a spooky dream about my ex-girlfriend who died, let's all go search for her.' 'Sure, Chief, we're right with you, just like the good old days the audience has never seen.' Right with you on the old Guardian designs, by the way. 'I am your sword. I am your shield', etc.

Picture this: Halo Infinite, Cortana is in the Zeta Halo control room, about to activate it to start the reclamation, harkoning the words of Guilty Spark. Chief has confronted her. There's still good in you yadda yadda. But this whole time Chief has been followed by a cloaked humanoid. John believes this to be Mendicant Bias, helping him navigate the Ark. However, once Cortana presents the Index she's kept this whole time, the cloaked figure turns out to be none other than the Didact himself, still alive. The Warden Eternal stands up to boast and defend Cortana but within MOMENTS is forced mangled to the ground by Didact who claims "A traitorous construct does not even deserve to stand in my presence. You are now decommissioned." The Warden is destroyed. His parts, helmet included, are used to reconstruct the Didacts body. "How foolish of you to think a simple construct would be the Reclaimer. You are a tool, forged of ions and metal - nothing more than a light-show with a face, an optical illusion with a voice. And when I have destroyed you, there will be nothing for you afterwards, for you are not alive." The judgement leaves Cortana trembling. Didact ejects John from the control room, and now Cortana is left to stand alone, a Rampant AI, against the might of the Forerunner. Then the level begins.

i somehow thought it'd also be a cool alternative if we had the Didact have a "the enemy of my enemy" moment and Join the chief as an ally born of circumstance, with the Warden Eternal's pride growing wary of Cortana's instability (probably being infected by a portion of her rampancy) and ultimately betraying her, seeing her unfit to bare the mantle of responsibility as she is disposable and unreliable whereas he is eternal. Then again the problem with my idea is the concept of power scaling between the two as established by the game already.

@James Gk The reason this always bugged me is the fact that it's not like Bungie exactly had amazing designs, either. Hell, the Chief's armor in Halo 1 looked like a plastic action figure. A toy. The UNSC personnel also had pretty damned stupid uniform designs, too. But nobody cared about it then. It was all about the story and the gameplay. People weren't nearly as fussed about huge, dramatic changes in art style between Halo 1 and Halo 2, because they were just looking forward to more Halo.

@@Phoenix-214 it's because a large chunk of Halo's old fanbase grew up with and became attached to the blocky, brutalist visual nature of the older games, and it's harder to find that same connection with the unrecognisably different new games. Why stay a Halo fan if Halo doesn't look familiar any more? It's not a bad visual style, just not associable with what a lot of us grew up with and with the name 'Halo.' Halo is a sci-fi military FPS, but visually emphasised the militaristic aspect (lots of worn out greens, blocky armour, etc...) whereas the newer games look like they follow the trends of the sci-fi games industry to the letter. Halo 5's Spartans looks closer to Mass Effect's base undersuit design than to Halo 3's walking slabs of green metal. That's why so many people were happy with Infinite's art style returning to its roots, and ironically all the H4/5 fans are now experiencing the same things as us H1/2/3 fans did in 2012. Oh, and H2 did not change stylistically from CE anywhere near as much as H4 did from Reach. And the franchise wasn't as well established back then as it was in 2010, making visual changes feel quite jarring and dramatic when H4 arrived.

Jon Iorio The logic plague doesn’t make sense due to it directly being linked to the Flood. It makes more sense that the “Cortana” in Halo 5 is simply one of Cortana’s rampant fragments that was teleported to the Domain. After all, a lot of rampant Cortana fragments viewed Humanity in an extremely negative light. This would also explain evil Cortana’s hate of The UNSC Infinity. Seeing as how Infinity leaving Requiem basically cemented Cortana’s fall into rampancy. Had the ship not left and attacked the Didact, Cortana could have feasibly been returned to Earth or wherever Halsey was being kept and repaired.

Actually the point in which it would’ve occurred(and Hidden Xperia covered this three years ago) was when Cortana was captured by the gravemind for all that time of the end of Halos 2-3. You make good points, I won’t deny that, but the Logic Plague being an AI related infection by the flood that clouds her mind and makes her do all this makes a lot more sense to me, and it’s also just way more likely. Especially considering that Requiem and Didact’s ship were both completely annihilated. So there isn’t any way a fragment of hers could survive in between 4 and 5 without a stable device with reliable power

This sounds like an awesome theory. To me, the Didact was always intended to be the definitive antagonist of the 343i data. I think the meetup with Mendicant Bias would be a mid point in the game, with the later part being a journey to the Domain. The game would start with Infinity supporting the war on Sanghelios as Chief goes AWOL to search for Mendicant. There's still some loose ends though, like the absolute record (which was also a bandaid story developed on Escalation), the presence of Ilsa Zane' s NCA forces, Sapien Sunrise and the cultists from Hunt The Truth season 2. Finally, a major thread that has been ignored is the relationship of the return of the Flood and the discovery of Maethrillian's location by Rho Barutamee's luminary. In my mind, H5 would end with a confrontation with the Didact on the Domain that however victorious or failed, would be interrupted by the return of the Flood, eventually leading Blue Team (and maybe Osiris) to Reach's Forerunner relic on Sword Base, so they can travel to Maethrillian on H6. A bit of a mess, but that's kind of my personal headcannon. I don't know, I just really hope they eventually get back to the Maethrillian Narrative and we get some human insurrectionist enemies.

Just putting it out there that I really hope the Didact will have some involvement in a future game like Infinite. Maybe he's controlling Cortana, a future ally or something. Anyways love to see all this concept art and reborn theory, cool stuff!

What if in Halo 6 the didact is what made Chief and his squadron that was with him "Lose everything" as chief was trying to retrieve Cortana, and her now following the forerunner beliefs, The Didact came and persuaded her to join him, and explains chief can no longer protect her without her help. Obviously, the didact being defeated in Halo 4 and the "Lore Prison" that you explained kinda puts a damper on this, but still, fun to theorize while we wait for more info.

One thing I always wondered was if the first level was originally going to be the last level. Both the first and last level take place on a snowy area with forunner structures. Also the villain that had been hyped up in Spartan Ops got killed in the first level. Especially if he was supposed to be a second-in-command to the Didact, that would have left the third game in the trilogy to kill the didact. The game might have originally been much darker too, given how disturbing some of the concept art is. I always thought it was weird that Halo 5 had a T considering a lot of people(myself included) were asking for the game to become a harder M instead.

As disappointing as 5's story was, at least 343 tried to do something a little original and different by having an emphasis on Locke and Osiris rather than just another generic Chief vs. the universe story and continuing to copy Bungie. That said, I think it was a necessary evil to pave the way for Infinite and bring it back to its glory. I truly believe it will be the Halo game we've all been waiting for. Hopefully we'll get Didact back and some of these unused concepts as well. God, E3 can't get here soon enough...

The "redesigns" for the Prometheans that you go through at the start was all art for H4, off the top of my head portions of it have been previously released online/in the H4 artbook. (And the first 2 "arbiter" art works you show are labeled under just "elites", I would argue that labeling them under arbiter could be false) I feel like I'm coming off a bit rude so I'll mention that my tone here is more casual observation and not demanding 10000000+ changes.

@Yung Sooty I like to think he is still alive and is the one pulling the strings from the shadows, with his body being so broken and all. He is using a corrupted version of Cortana to be the face of the reclamation and in doing so is allowing him to steal away humanities greatest tools (their A.I.). I find it hard to believe that Cortana would coincidentally use the same words the Didact did and also find it hard to believe the Warden Eternal would just willingly follow her. I am hopeful he returns in Infinite.

Halo 4 should have been the story for Halo 5. There should have been a more simple story to bridge the gap between 3 and 4. Imagine if Cortana’s rampancy was hinted at throughout Halo 4 until the end. That way Halo 5 would have been the emotion middle chapter. Halo 5 feels like it needed to end a lot story threads created from 4 and Spartan Ops. I hope Infinite glosses over the stupid stuff from those games while maintaining the things that worked so I can play 1-3, maybe 4 with visual mods, and Infinite as one good cohesive story.

My theory on the corrupted Hunters was that they were supposed to appear during the Argent Moon mission. Think about it: the first Hunter pair we encounter is in a laboratory of some kind, so it's possible some contaminants escaped or the Hunters were infected somehow, leading to a special variant. Who knows. Also, based purely on your theory, maybe its possible that Exuberant Witness filled the role Mendicant Bias was supposed to fill in the game?

I think the Blam Engine proved too cumbersome to create such an immense amount of designs. In turn, limited 343i's vision in making a Halo game. It's an old gaming engine that the artists and developers have described as difficult to work with as described in some of their interviews (specifically pointed out in the interview with Bonnie Ross from IGN). It is why they developed an entirely new gaming engine the past couple years to fit 343i's vision, the Slipspace Engine. Hopefully we will see this new engine and its huge potential in Halo: Infinite and supposedly Halo's next "10 Years". We have something to look forward to at E3 2020, then onward to early flighting, then a full-on launch of the game we've been waiting for.

The Didact didn’t make sense in Halo 4 to start, he’s a forerunner who was shoot and caged on a sphere for 100,000 years. How did he survive if he was wounded? If you look at the story of the forunner precursor war, it is very similar to the upcoming human created war because the forunners were created by the precursors and ended up exterminating them and you know the rest... The humans created the AI's, it's like a mirror... Maybe the humans must succeed where the precursors failed to get the M.O.R... I don't know maybe you can cook up some iconic theory soup with this. Also, if in Halo infinite, 343 would want to make you feel helpless like in Halo ce, why not let Halsey be consumed by the flood... Imagine the possibilities... Now I see why people hate Halo 5. We could have got Didact and making Cortana into a villain is a big mistake, after all she went through to save the Master Cheif. The Warden was just another rogue Forerunner AI, he wasn't a bad villain but could have been the Didact second in command.
