Well amongst my many nuggets I’m gonna share that the one I’m so grateful to have grasped in its simplicity and ease of application is the 1:1 PE ratio for maintenance and how bumping it up leads to fat loss. I’m currently doing this now and have been able to confirm the validity of this for myself and am soooo glad I found this simple formula the week before I was asked to be in my best friends wedding!

First, thank you for this interview with Dr. Ted Naiman. He is always a fascinating speaker to listen to, and his unique emphasis on protein and the protein leverage hypothesis introduces something new to the ketogenic community. With reference to the disagreement in the ketogenic communty about excess protein intake inducing elevated levels of mTOR and IGF-1, I think this controversy maybe resolved if we subsume mTOR and IGF-1 in a broader dietary context. While it is true that protein induces both mTOR and IGF-1, and both things have been implicated in cancer, I think it is important to understand that the degree to which these things are involved in the etiology of cancer is dependent on how long they are elevated in the blood. A serving of protein will cause them to rise, but since protein is so satiating it will also allow the person to go through lengthier fasting periods, which in turn will result in more prolonged periods of lower levels mTOR and IGF-1. Hence the satiating effect of protein, and the longer fasting periods that such satiety facilitates, will result in a net lowering of both mTOR and IGF-1 levels. Contrast this with the low fat/high carb diet, which can also raise both mTOR and IGF-1, and cause the person to be perpetually hungry and therefore eat more frequently. This will result in CHRONIC elevation of both mTOR and IGF-1, instead of the pulsatile elevation of these substances on a low carb protein rich diet.

The PE diet is great for people attempting to lose weight on a low carb diet. It makes sense. If you're not burning carbs, you MUST burn fat. You do not want to add fat to your diet if you are already fat. You have plenty of fat to burn. This is why fat people who go on a carnivore diet lose TREMENDOUS amounts of weight. Because the meat that they are eating is so incredibly lean. Even ribeyes! Once you've reach your healthy body fat percentage and have regained proper metabolic health, it's no longer useful. Up to 2 grams of protein per kg of body mass for maintenance and fat for energy. Carbohydrates are completely unnecessary. There is a reason as to why your body has such a tight clamp on blood sugar. It does not want any high blood glucose excursions.

Brilliant interview - thank you both! I tend to do keto for about 6 months a year and i've always lost a lot of muscle mass. In my recent Keto phase i've followed Teds (and Ben Bickmans) advice for eating more protein and it definitely works. The fear of protein is definitely unfounded... proof is in my Ketone levels and glucose readings. It's definitely worth trying.

Ted Naiman is the ONLY one in this space that has explained that we are going to be insulin resistant if we are still FAT--in spite of being very low carb. I believe this may be the reason I have struggled with blood pressure. I am still not to my desired weight, AND I have put too much emphasis on fat to satiety, thus encouraging the "24 hours later" higher insulin from over fed adipocytes!

He is so right by my experience. One thing that is missing in the devate, despite him being very openminded and not dogmatic, is the cyclical approach. Since the body doesn't follow a daily macro metabolism but a multiple days cycle, you can have one high fat day to have the good effect on hormones, etc. but still keep the fat low on the long term.

Another Great Interview. Thanks Vanessa. Also i like how Dr. Ted offers different view points about carbs not being evil. To many in the low carb world try an paint carbs in a black or white way. The only question i would of liked you to ask him is about his views on ketones, an what about eating certain fat an protein ratios to get to certain levels of ketones in the blood and the amazing brain an health benefits that ketones offer. For me personally i feel best at a certain level of ketones in my body which keeps my mood elevated an my hunger cravings down so i eat higher fat an around 120grams of protein for my ideal body weight of 160lbs Always more to learn thanks again

Interesting, so according to Dr Phinney, lower sodium intake is associated with higher mortality rates. The Doc just salts to taste so surely isn't getting anywhere near 5g of Sodium. If his carbs are super low his body is excreting all his electrolytes, so his approach goes against the currently accepted Keto norm. I'm beginning to think the heart palps I had when starting Keto were much more correlated with the body producing adrenaline to make glucose due to my metabolic systems not ready to utilise Ketones efficiently than lack of sodium.

Dr. Naiman makes excellent points. The one thing I encourage him to do is study GIP, the intestinal sensors that produce GIP, and GIP acting to increase insulin. Due to differing genetic coding, a lot of people produce a high amount of GIP when the sensors sense carbohydrates. These people get overweight and obese when eating too many carbohydrates.
@KetogenicGirl
@KetogenicGirl 4 жыл бұрын
Yes it has to do with SNPs or single nucleotide polymorphisms but Ted can’t be an expert on all things! He is already and engineer and a doctor ;) Dr Jose Antonio has some research on this topic however.

@@KetogenicGirl , thank you for more details. Yes, Dr. Naiman can't thoroughly study everything. But, if he can study a little about GIP, he will have more info that he can use to help his patients. GIP production explains why people should stop looking down on overweight and obese people. Also, it helps overweight and obese people know why they must reduce carb intake so that they have more ammo to refuse carbs.

Does it matter if you eat 2000 calories with fat, protein and carbs or 2000 calories just from protein and fat, you will still loose weight and get lean as long as you eat in a calorie deficit ?
@VLearnIT
@VLearnIT 4 жыл бұрын
It all depends on which is easier for you. If you're more into carbs than fat then lower the fat more and slightly increase carbs or if you're more satisfied with a bit more fat slightly lower the fat and decrease carbs. I like to cycle, keeping my carbs and fat lower most days, under 100grams for carbs and 55grams for fats. Protein is my main source daily, then on what I call cheat days I up either carbs or fats depending on my cravings. The key for me was to increase protein from 50grams per day to 160 to 180 grams per day.

Hi: something that always confuses me is when these experts say to eat a certain amount of protein, are they saying grams of the macro protein or grams of meat? Different experts use these concepts differently but interviews don’t always clear up which concept they are referring to. I had one expert tell me 75 gr protein 3 times a day when she meant 75 gr of meat. I think, but am not sure, that Ted Naiman is referring to # of grams of protein so that would mean about 3-4x that amount of meat (generally). Can this be clarified?
@KetogenicGirl
@KetogenicGirl 4 жыл бұрын
Debra Ann most of the time when its being discussed its grams of protein in the meat. When speaking in grams it would be pretty rare and people would usually refer the the weights of meats in pounds and ounces

this is so confusing. he says low carb+ low fat= starvation, which is not good. if you are "fat" though, don't eat fat and be low carb. so if according to him protein is just protein, and energy is either carb or fat, then where does the energy come from ??? on low carb, you got to give your body fat to burn fat. how about other hormones, like histamine and leptin? how about thyroid and thymus glands and their health. how about phytoacids, for example, almonds, that deplete you of minerals? according to this diet, you can have a whole bunch of almonds and cheese. If you put the pistachio in his calculator, it shows as fat gain, but it is on the list of ok foods. what?? it sounds like any other "diet" that will make you miserable if you are fat and are trying to lose weight. he also says be 110 lbs if you are 5.2 and female. there is no way in hell that I can be 110. at best 5.2 and127. ok. but not 110. ummmm no thanks.
@bildotunechi
@bildotunechi 4 жыл бұрын
"so if according to him protein is just protein, and energy is either carb or fat, then where does the energy come from ???" The fat stores on your body are always a good place to start since you want to lose weight. It makes more sense to burn that off than the slab of butter that's going in your coffee, does it not? "If you put the pistachio in his calculator, it shows as fat gain, but it is on the list of ok foods. what??" You can have things that cause weight gain, in moderation. 15 pistachios aren't going to have a detrimental effect. "it sounds like any other "diet" that will make you miserable if you are fat and are trying to lose weight." Having done this WOE for two years and losing more than 110lbs since, I disagree. As for the rest, I'm not qualified to answer, but he goes a lot more in-depth in most of his other videos if you're actually open to absorbing information that isn't necessarily what you currently believe in. His ideology is far more backed up by science for weight loss than LCHF.

@@janebanks2768 I have intentionally been working out and toning up, and this WOE gives the perfect building blocks for doing so. I have also been helping someone who is sedentary with the same diet, and although they haven't built noticeable muscle, they haven't lost it either. The worst part of the typcial 'butter chugging' keto is yes, you'll lose weight, but you're also losing lean muscle, which means you're more than likely to end up 'skinny fat' when you shed the pounds. Dr Naiman has heaps of information on KZbin, and also a book called the P. E. Diet. I highly recommend them both.

I'm very skeptical of the protein hypothesis. If protein was driving satiety like he says then all you would need to do is drink a ton of protein shakes to lose weight. I've done that before. It sucks and I didn't lose weight without fighting intense hunger. Back then (20 years ago) protein was the one macro that was never demonized. Then I restricted my carbs and the weight just flew off with no hunger. And what he says about not being concerned about someone eating 4 lbs of chicken breast but being concerned if it was 4 lbs of ribeye: no, it's the complete opposite. Way more people have problems going too lean on carnivore than too fat.
