Air Canada is the flag-carrier and, as such, has a responsibility to dawn the maple leaf and be the first choice for travel in and out of the country. Let's explore what fleet powers the operation at Air Canada and how the company innovated during the pandemic to maximise the life of an aircraft type on the way out. This is your full overview of Air Canada, from Airbus to Boeing aircraft to small and big.

It should have been covered since both AC mainline and AC Rouge aircraft are maintained by the same AMO 32-03. AC Rouge only has A319s A320s and A321s. All passenger 767s were retired sold for parts or converted.

One certainly develops a sense of the variation within Air Canada's fleet simply from seeing how many aircraft types it flies into LAX alone.

My most memorable flight was in summer of 1981. Calgary to JFK on an Air Canada 727. The crew brought 11 year old me to the cabin during the flight. The landing at JFK was as smooth as silk. I’ll never forget that summer trip, seeing BA and Air France Concordes in JFK and Heathrow (and also hearing/feeling them when they took off). The air traffic controller situation was navigated to the point where we experienced minor delays (much worse these days).

It's nice to see 'my' old A320s are still in service. They've proven to be a great aircraft - despite reservations some AMEs expressed about them early on as they entered service. I loved flying it - it was a landmark for it's day with the extended autoflight capabilities and flight deck design. Thanks for posting this - much appreciated.

Coming back from Barcelona to Calgary last month, I had an interesting fleet. Barcelona to Toronto with their A330-300 and from Toronto to Calgary with their bigger B777-300 ER. Enjoyed both aircraft a lot as the previous A330-300 flight I had with Air Canada was many years ago flying from Montreal to London Heathrow. The previous Air Canada B777-300 ER flight was from Vancouver to Toronto several years ago as well. All in all, I think I’ve flown in 90% of the types they have now. Plus the B767-200, the B767-300 and last but not least, the black-nosed DC-9 of Air Canada when I was almost 2 years of age 😅

The black & red livery is absolutely gorgeous, especially affixed to the MAX 8! Love to see you do more on my country's flagship airline. As for my favourite aircraft, you should have seen and flown in the greatest, IMO, airliner of all time, that being the Lockheed TriStar L-1011!

I also loved flying on the TriStar, but had a definite soft spot for the 747 as well. My last flight on an AC 747 was an unexpected treat. Returning from LAX to YYZ, the expected 767 was replaced by a 747 Combi, allocated to that flight to transport some racehorses from LAX to YYZ en route to LHR. The flight was underbooked anyway, and I ended up with an entire four-seat centre section to myself!

Last summer I had chatted with some AC pilots in Vancouver about working for AC and how big the jump is from smaller pilot jobs to the airlines. They asked if I had a license and I had just got my Private a couple weeks before that. So they invited me to the cockpit and it was the MAX, it was a little more spacious than a 172. Something I'll be able to share with others soon enough.

One of the welcome developments since the pandemic is the allocation of several of Air Canada's A-330s away from European operations and onto the Toronto and Montreal routes to Florida during the winter season. I've been back and forth a few times between YYZ and FLL, and whether flying nonstop or via YUL, the flights always seem to be on the A-330 -- a nice change of pace and a great improvement from spending hours crammed into jam-packed 767 aircraft with Air Canada Rouge.

Viewers outside North America may not realize Air Canada 🍁 pays for the United States customs and immigration services to maintain operations at the largest airports in Canada. (Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver that I have passed through, and I surmise Calgary. Do not know of others.) U.S.-bound departures from these airports have a dedicated portion of the terminal separate from both domestic and other international flights. Between the ticketing hall and the security check, travelers "enter the United States," present passports, and answer the "anything to declare" inquiries. You can violate federal U.S. laws in these spaces because, legally, you've crossed an international boundary. Only after "leaving the United States" does one actually drop checked bags and proceed to the security check (conducted by Canadian officials). Legally (though not literally) one starts in Canada, enters the U.S., re-enters Canada, then flies to the U.S. as if on a domestic U.S. flight. This arrangement gives Air Canada a huge advantage over its Canadian competitors (and U.S.!) who also fly to U.S. destinations. First, since passengers have already cleared U.S. immigration, Air Canada can fly to any airport in the United States whether that airport handles international traffic or not. Competitors have fewer potential destinations since many smaller cities may not have the federal agents at their airports to process international traffic, or the times available for international arrival slots may be constrained by limited staffing. This flexibility would be especially useful to the numerous U.S.-Canada city pairs (of all sizes) only 1-2 hours' flight time apart. That includes LaGuardia, where AC is virtually the only non-domestic airline able to offer service. Second, because international "arrivals" wait in line only with Air Canada passengers, their time spent at passport control tends to be quicker than it would be if they had to wait in line at larger U.S. airports with travelers from every other international arrival. One may fly Westjet's short-haul service from YVR to SFO on a single-aisle aircraft, but at a busy time of day passengers deplaning the heavy jets from Europe and Asia and South America may make wait time for passport control almost as long as the flight. Meanwhile, Air Canada passengers just waltz into U.S. domestic terminals, which makes the back-end of this international passenger experience feel ever so much easier. Finally, contracting with the U.S. agencies to provide customs and immigration in Canada has ramifications for Air Canada's fleet. Because the airline can disperse its U.S. bound passengers among dozens of destinations, it can deploy single aisle aircraft to most of the routes over two hours and regional jets for the many cities near the shared border. That reduces the number of heavies the fleet requires and preserves the fleet's widebody capacity for long-haul flying. Toronto-Chicago and Montreal-Boston (large cities, close together) are incredibly busy routes, but proximity means both are best served by increasing frequency on regional aircraft. Even Toronto-LAX and Montreal-LAX (large cities, far apart) typically see 737s on those routes.

I think AC has a lot of upcoming announcements as they seek to further modernize their fleet. Expectations are below and include Rouge. 787 - Further orders exprected to replace the 777-200s and potentially the older A330s (A330s seem like a cheap stop-gap). 777-300 - Doubt to see changes in the future for now. Fit the mission perfectly. 200s could be converted into freighters to go alongside upcoming new build 777Fs. A330 - See the 787-10ER as eventual replacement. A321 - CEOs are in desperate need of retrofit or replacement. Used Alaska 321s seem like prime option to go alongside XLRs. Rouge 321 fleet only seems to grow but used AC seems likely. A320 - 737 MAXs or potential A220-500. AC has options for MAXs and I see another order in the works. Expanding Rouge 320 fleet seems likely. Lots of used Alaska 320s out there. 737 - Only see more coming onboard in next 3-5 years. A319 - Keeping them until more A220s are brought in. Rouge A319 fleet is at the end of their life. Replacement needed ASAP. A220 - Keep them coming. Express will have decisions, esp with the CRJ-200s.

Not a fan of their Rouge experiment especially the old 319's pawned off on Atlantic Canada domestic. I like the long haul experience on the 787's better than their 777's. I most enjoy flying short haul express circuits on q400's and the mid range mainline a220's. The Max I have flown and is nice but it really seems like a deluxe version of the 737-800 NG that AC has never flown. Just missing flying on the their a330's to have done the whole fleet. The a330 I have flown on other carriers and I liked it but prefer the 787.
