Unless it's a piece of kit that is not accessible to all then there should be no issue. Tape and water bottles are fair game. Wait till a big manufacturer comes up with the same idea and it will be legal again

The positive thing was that you could get more aero, gaining watts with just a gorilla tape.. now for the same effect you’ve to spend a lot of money… I used to check my performance with and without tape.. the results was that with tape I had my best bike split until now last year in Cozumel

@@TheAfinda To some degree yes, to another degree no. Put a pro on a regular road bike instead of a tri bike and they'll beat out most age groupers with ease. The gains they're looking for here are marginal and can save seconds to a minute or two (depending on the distance and depending on the aero change). In a full distance race, it may not have any effect on where they finish, but the goal is to add up all of the marginal aero gains so they become significant over a long race.

The aero bar taping might only be a tiny fraction of an improvement, but over 112 miles, even the tiniest fraction will make a noticeable difference

It separates the air before it hits your nether regions. Yeah, it is a microscopic gain aerodynamically, but if you think about it, the diamond frame bike hasn't changed much since 1926, and manufacturers are doing all they can to market a new bike to you. "1 watt here", "2 watts there".... I don't envy the marketing managers, but then again, people are dumb enough to keep spending $10K on a new bike despite there being absolutely no reason to. "I got a scratch on my Ferrari, time to buy a new car."

The profile design aero bottle flaps (Profile Design HSF Aeria Hydration System) are also fairing by nature

Though that's true, I don't believe the rule applies to hydration systems.

@@triathlonHowas you can see the flaps do nothing for the hydration. It only purpose is fairing by definition. If that is true, then anyone should be allowed to build a device to attach on the hydration with the intend purpose of moving air around the body. I am not against this. I just want to know where the line is. As this bottle will cost $250-$500 to install.

@@khontruong9588 I don't disagree, though I think the spirit of the rule is to ban items whose sole purpose is to be a make shift fairing. This is my interpretation, but I would be surprised if all non-integrated hydration are banned through this rule change. There are two specific sections in the rules that are changed. First, the specification about bottles down the kit. Second, the note about fairings or other materials intended to reduce drag. Though hydration kits are meant to be aero, I read this as them staying within the written rules because their purpose first and foremost is hydration.

Needs updating... the aero-bar fairing rule was eliminated and to be re-written to make it more clear. The only exception is the use of duck tape on aero-bars.

This is the section of the rules as it stands as of today: "Protective screens, fuselages, fairings, or any other devices or materials (including duct tape) added or blended into the structure with the intent to reduce (or having the effect of reducing) resistance to air penetration are prohibited. Aerodynamic assemblies and protuberances on the head tube or elsewhere are prohibited. Provided that the use of adhesive tape (including duct tape) does not fundamentally alter or enlarge the general shape of the structure, adhesive tape may be affixed to the bike (e.g., to cover valve cutout of the rear disc wheel, to cover bolts access, etc.); " Are you saying that these are being rewritten or that this is the rewritten version?

However, the problem regarding "...assemblies and protuberances on the head tube or elsewhere..." portion. This implies that front aero-hydration systems and rear tool boxes might be considered illegal. In the past, the functional value of the attachment was the determinant of it being a "fairing" or not.

In theory, if the shape of the bag is more aerodynamic and the bag was seamless against your chest, it could make you faster, however, that would be considered a fairing and would be against the rules.

triathlete.com has a good article on this. The water bottle down the kit was a loophole for how the rules were previously written. It's about aero not danger. The bottle trick means the jersey is stretched down and air can flow around your body easier. Taping the bars means you are adding an aerofoil although the angle of attach is probably not going to help much speed wise anyway. The bike race is not a time trial in the traditional sense.
