My thoughts on a dead battery. I don't like to start a vehicle on a dead battery if I can help it. I like to charge it up first. I worry about burning up the voltage regulator or the alternator. I've worked at car dealerships and seen so many alternators burned out from jump starting the cars over and over.

@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics What's the duty cycle of a typical automotive alternator expected to be? From the components in the ones I've taken apart, I'd be surprised if they're expecting more than 30 or 40% load for sustained periods. Diodes are not oversized, there's not a whole lot heat sinking going on.
@Garth20114 жыл бұрын
@@dmscheidtify Ventilation and heat sinks are usually problems for alternators. The bridge rectifier converts AC power into DC power and during that process heat is generated. Rectifiers need to have a heat sink to stay cool and not all alt designs are doing well in that department. Overall though, if an alternator goes out, it's usually the rectifier or the voltage regulator of which those can be replaced with higher quality brands. Usually if a regulator goes out, its best to replace it with an XHD model or extra heavy duty as those tend to perform best and last. Rectifiers are also made in higher grades such as all copper etc.
@dmscheidtify4 жыл бұрын
@@Garth2011 I know all that. I've repaired quite a few alternators with blown electronics. It was fast and easy (and cheap) to do on the Delco SI alternators, which are very popular on hot rods, etc (They had overheating problems, particular where they were retrofitted, and the installer didn't remember they suck cooling air through the back) Most automotive applications don't require the alternator to work very hard for very long. The design load is a few minutes at max output to recover from long crank starts in the cold, followed by the normal running load. That Silvarado has (or should have) a group 78 battery in it, call it 60A-hr capactiy. It's dead as a doornail, so with typical charge efficiency, it's going to absorb 80A-hr or so. That's a couple hours of that alternator running flat out. Won't hurt a new one, once. A 20 year old one? Wouldn't count on it. Of course, it probably won't die today, but in a month or so.

@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics Alternators were not designed to charge a cars dead battery. Doing so is a strain on the alternator and circuit. Yes, they will do it, but they are designed to provide power to a running vehicle. The battery is designed to start the vehicle and provide stable power by absorbing spikes and providing power when the alternator isn't spinning fast enough for the demand.
@dennisbailey42964 жыл бұрын
I agree with Jason Bauman it's very hard on an Alternator to charge a battery below 10 V. But just as an FYI the alternator really is not designed to charge a battery as to maintain systems that are being used well running and driving the car. Even though it has the capacity to do some charging it's not really designed to give a full battery charge because of its limit of 14.5 V. All the best Canada

These new jump packs are amazing! Remember the old 50 lb. ones? I hated lugging that around! I bought an Audew charger similar to that one, after seeing it blow away the competition on the Project Farm channel, where he tested it against a few other models. It's the same as that one you have, basically - maybe a different shape is all. The cables are also thin. This Audew is rated for 2,000A. First time using it, I had a dead deep-cycle battery while winching a dead car onto my flatbed trailer. That was WAY too much current, but it handled it!! I couldn't believe it. The winch never spun so fast in all the years I've owned it! After getting the car into position, there was still 77% capacity in the Audew! Amazing. Fast forward a few months, and the battery died on me again while winching a Lexus RX350. Audew to the rescue. Luckily I got the vehicle up on the trailer before the attachment with the cables died. When I plug it in now, it lets out a constant shriek. Must've burned something out. This winch up was a tough one. I forgot to release the parking brake the first time, plus, was on a steep incline to begin with. Then when I got the vehicle almost all the way up, my winch failed and popped into freespool! The car went careening down the trailer. I slammed the winch back into gear, and it slammed the vehicle to a stop! That was a close one! So, had to winch it up AGAIN. Guess that was a little too much for the jump pack. The winch probably draws 500A when stalled. I might take apart that little safety box with the light on it and see what happened. The company is supposed to be sending me some part. What part that is was lost in a poor translation ....

I've also thought about using a lithium power tool battery to charge it up in a pinch but haven't tried it yet (maybe an M12). The problem with the small gauge leads is the extra resistance they represent. So there is less power going from the internal battery and more being wasted as heat. I would stick with your tried and true one which has appropriately sized cables for the amount of current being carried. They’ve used 4 cells in series to get a 33% higher voltage which means they can use 33% smaller gauge wires but those leads looked a lot thinner. And while most cars should be able to withstand 16.8V there’s always going to be the odd exception.

Hi Ivan, when you connected the trek up to the batteries the fact that the terminal voltage was so high was not because of the trek power, but the HIGH battery series resistance. The current going into the battery was probably only 1 or 2 Amps, the trek can supply by the sound if it more than adequate starter current which is very impressive. When you had the first start failure, the 0.6V would have been the trek having isolated itself from the vehicle electrics, possibly due to the alternator beginning to perform. That is why you have to act in 30Seconds, the trek disconnects itself, or if it senses any problem that may harm it. The constant output of the alternators will bring the batteries back up as you have found with time. Can you please do a followup and see how the batteries have recovered at a later date?

A bit odd that the wall charger is only 5v. They must have a boost converter somewhere to charge the 15v battery. Also it's only rated for two amps. I got a glimpse of the back of the unit in the video and it says the battery is rated for 18000Mah. So a two amp charger is (at best) going to take 9 hours to charge it IF the battery were 5v. BUT if it has a boost converter for 5v to 15volts then it's going to draw 3x the charging current. That 2amp capacity of the charger is only going to be a third (15/5) so the charger only has capacity of 2amps / 3 = 660ma at 15v. 18000/660 = 27 hours charge time. I'd like to know what you find when charging it from dead. If the pack is smart enough to use the USB C properly it can get 20v and several amps. I doubt it does though. It's probably doing the same trick with 5V. Then a couple of amps is max with a USB cable as well. Needs more investigation IMHO. In addition did you find a way to reset the unit other than to pull that connector out and in? Those connections aren't going to last IMHO.

Nice gadget. Apparently, it has 4 Lithium ion cells in it, in series. This will put out 16.8 Volts when fully charged. Some of that gets lost in the diode of that black box, cables and clamps. But definitely not something that I would leave connected to my vehicle's electrical system for a longer than just for cranking and to get the alternator going. Most of its counterparts have just 3 cells in series, which will put out 12.6 Volts when fully charged. Not so harsh on your car's electrical system, but less cranking power. I would have replaced the batteries of both vehicles. When a battery sits empty for a few days with a load still on it, the strongest ones of the 6 cells will charge the weakest ones with a negative voltage. That would hurt those weakest ones beyond repair. Those will always take the biggest hit during cranking and charging. Those weak ones will cause that battery to fail on its owner again, soon. Proper way would be to start, rev for a little bit so the alternator gets its field coil going, and turn off all lights, hvac and other power hogs immediately. Wait a few mins. Charging current should be at least 20Amps. If not: replace battery and diag the alternator after that, just in case. After 15 mins: turn vehicle totally off, turn off all lights, dome light, everything. Wait a few mins. Measure battery voltage. Should be above 12 Volts. If not: replace battery. Then, if you need to go, then go: car should crank and start. If not, then replace battery. If you don't need to go anywhere, then charge your battery until full with a proper car battery charger. ...but nobody does all of that when they just need to crank and get going somewhere... If you start using a car with a faulty battery, you might damage something. The battery is an important component in keeping the car's voltage stable. I wonder what died on the Subaru... For those that think these kind of boosters are junk: you were using it wrong. These kind of boosters are NOT made for replacing an empty car battery for crank-no-start diag work that requires cranking for longer than normal.

Nice! I have a Noco GB70& GB150 2000a/4000a i love them very reliable. Does the Tekpow have cross protection for wrong hook up? I’m asking for a friend 😂 thanks for sharing Ivan. Seems cool.

Yeah all the modern jump packs are "idiot proof" :)

Ouch, charging that from USB. 2A @ 5V already gives you more than 6,5 hours to charge. Taking into account the inefficiency (don't expect more than 75%) will give you around 9 hours.

Not really an issue... Just charge it overnight 😉

Is 16V actually safe for all car electronics?
@AP93114 жыл бұрын
Yep, as long it is within 11 to 15v for alternator. 16v is for booster when battery is completely dead. Completely safe.

In Japanese cars, inside the electronic control units, I met 22 volt protective radio components. This means it is safe to 21 volts.

Ivan, A question. Can these boost packs and the NOCO ones work in 220v setting? I am in India and there is nothing like these available.
@RobertHancock14 жыл бұрын
Most of these just use a USB charger, you might just need a different charger or a plug adapter.

I suspect they're using the higher voltage to their advantage (uses less current) good for them, not good for your battery unless it's a Calcium!

Great point! Those cars cranked over so nicely 👌🙂

@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics I've been stranded with a flat Battery in the middle of nowhere with nothing more than a few Power Tools & 18v Cordless Drill(back in the Nicad days) & have resorted to cutting off the power leads on a tool & using the 18v Battery to bring up the voltage on the 12v Car Battery to get me out of a pickle. (Not recommended as it roasts the 18v Cordless battery but got me home).

I look forward to your 12 month review of using this thing as a go to device. :)

Report back in a few months, I doubt it will survive frequent/professional usage. Plus, try it on a big diesel, I bet it won't work :/

Ivan, why don't you take the GB40 apart and fix it like you do everything else?

Not a bad idea... Needs a new internal battery pack for sure 😁

I hear alternators under pressure. Noco is better built. Long term assessment needed for critical evaluation.

is the one you have a 1200 or 1500A. I see from your amazon link they offer both at different prices. Not seeing the JT2500 you reviewed. Is this a prototype?

The link got messed up for some reason...I'll check with the vendor. Maybe they sold out in 10 minutes lol
