It's because that's footage from the Switch trailer. When it's ported to other platforms like the PC, I'd bet it looks a lot better. On PC there will likely be graphics enhancing mods too.

The thing with cozy games like this is, you need GOALS. Not little goals, like collect items, grow ingredients, make recipes/friends. No, they need bigger goals that you strive for, long-term. In games like Stardew Valley and OG Harvest Moon games, these bigger goals were either game-made via quests and a dedicated storyline, or were able to be self-made by the player. (Player goals usually have to do with marrying NPCs, having kids, upgrading EVERYTHING and getting your homestead/house looking exactly as you want it) Without these big goals, the game gets boring REALLY fast. So when I see a trailer or review for a cozy game that ONLY talks about the short-term, small goals, I get really wary. I don't want to play a garden/cooking game with basic NPCs. I can get that anywhere. I want a goal-oriented game that can keep me invested for weeks, if not for months or years. So while this is the start of a great idea, I'm not buying a gardening game with a Hobbit filter. I want a Hobbit game that has gardening elements. I want the NPCs to have their own stories. I want to help shape those stories. I want to hear gossip while I shop for ingredients. I want to hear rumors about "Mad Baggins" and his silly stories. I want to become invested in the different Hobbit families, and their lineages. I want Fell Winters to be something me and my NPC neighbors have to actively worry about each year. I want Rangers to bring news of distant lands. I want to see mischievous faunts stealing pies from windows and crops from fields. I want a living, breathing Shire to play in. And, sadly, that's not what this looks like so far.

​@@yippeeflowers (Long comment is long) I've watched the gameplay at this point, and while my hopes are definitely higher, I'm still not interested in buying it for myself yet. I'm definitely a roleplaying gamer, and so far this looks like a very simple game with only surface-level roleplay elements. Beyond changing your appearance and choosing different dialogue options, I don't see the experience of this game differing much from one gamer to the next. (Meaning, I can just watch a playthrough of it and get all the enjoyment from that, second-hand, that I would from playing it personally. No need to buy it when I can just watch it for free, like a movie.) I still don't see any meaningful, long-term goals. At least, none that interest me, personally. The story might be interesting, but I haven't seen enough of it to be hooked. The cooking and other skill stuff will be fun, but only for so long. Building relationships with fellow Hobbits will be the most interesting part, but I haven't really been pulled in by their personalities yet to say for certain. Is there more than just a friendship system? Is there marriage? Having kids? Harvest Moon and Stardew Valley are extremely popular, not just because they're fun farming games, but because there was a marriage/family system. I'd argue that, at least for the female audience of those games, that was the biggest draw. What's the full farming and ranching system like? What's the fulfillment of upgrading your tools and decorating your house? Just how many options will we have for cosmetics and decor and what do we have to do to unlock those options? Will they even be locked to begin with, or will they be open to us to buy from the start? I don't mean to sound like a cynic. I'm just being extremely cautious. I have hope for this game - I really do. But as it stands, I have more questions than answers and I know myself well enough (and have played enough of this genre) to know that, from what I've seen, it looks like a cute game that I'll play for a week or two before dropping entirely. Not because I didn't find it charming, but simply because I got bored. So I'm holding my breath. I want to be excited for this. But I know better than to just blindly believe in hopes for a perfect Hobbit game. Advertising can be misleading. What the creators show may not be a perfect representation of the whole game. Creators can LIE. That's how we got No Man's Sky. I'll keep my eye on it and continue to watch playthroughs to hopefully get more answers and sus out just how in-depth the mechanics of this game are. But until I have a complete picture, I'm staying stand-offish.

I’d really like a re-release for the Hobbit game that came out in the early 2000s… that one was so perfect, in vibes and as an adventure. Updated graphics could really do it such a favor, because honestly? I cannot think of a single flaw about it. It is, hobbits build their houses mostly underground so they call them holes. I believe that the first sentence of The Hobbit was along the lines of In a hole under a hill there lived a hobbit. Not sure if that is completely accurate as it's been a while.

I love how all these a-holes coming in here think it's DEI because "Brown hobbits don't exist" (Yes, they do, they're called Harfoots and you can read about them in the preface of LOTR books written by Tolkien himself) and their 2nd reason is solely because two of the devs displease them with how they look.
