I’m super happy with my 2021 13” M1 MBP. So quick and editing LR with 61mp files and FCP in 4K is great. Personally don’t see any reason I’ll ever edit anything larger than 4k. Apple stepping up for sure but 2x more expensive for the 14” is not worth it to me. But I see many workflows finally opening up to laptop use for sure

The notch is an identifying feature. You can recognize from looking at the screen that you're an Apple user and therefore a member of the prestigious club and also probably financially doing well and therefore probably suitable for mating.

That is exactly what I have done. Late 2013 spec (maxed out at the time) has given me an uninterrupted 8 years of use. Ordered a maxed out (apart from SSD size) 16 inch a few days ago - should get 8 years or so out of this.

All the cool M1 chip stuff aside. Bringing back the ports on a Pro-level MacBook, is the best thing they have done in years, and now makes this an actual worthwhile competitor for professionals. However I won't forget that someone actually made the decision to take them away in the first place.

They removed ports for water-proof purposes and thought that we were heading in a direction where hdmi wouldnt matter and display ports wouldve just used usb-c. Obviously that didnt happen so they brought back the ports

7:50 windows hello actually does require an additional IR camera for facial recognition. On modern laptops the ir camera is usually very well hidden as it doesn't have to let through visible light, so it might look like just a regular webcam.

Sorry, but I have to add that it’s still not at the same level as Face ID, which, in addition to the IR camera and IR flash, has an IR “dot projector” which enables it to scan the 3D topography of your face and use the resulting 3D depth map to verify it’s you. A depth map simply provides much more data to the system and is thus more secure than a simple IR image from an IR camera. The main advantage of using IR for Windows Hello is actually that it works in the dark.

One flip side of relying on a dedicated port instead of USB is that it may not be up to date. The HDMI Apple chose, for example, isn't HDMI 2.1 (so you'll have to get a dongle if you want that). I've been using external card readers to have faster download speeds and support for other card formats: like compact flash/c-fast). The most significant advancement with Apple silicon seems to be energy efficiency. The M1 Max (on initial benchmarks) don't outpace the fastest AMD systems in raw performance: but they come close to matching the performance at half the wattage. I'd definitely like to upgrade for the video performance and image/video editing on a true HDR display. However, software also is important: for work I have software development apps that are strictly written for Intel and cannot be run in emulation on ARM.

Hi Marques, First, Thanks a lot for taking the time to review tech products. We really love your insights. Have you gotten the recent M1 Pro/Max MacBook Pro? Have you tested out if the read/write speeds max out before the 8tb. Basically, my question is, will M1 Max fully specced out be faster than fully specced out on all but storage. Between just 4TB and 8TB, is there are reason to expect 4TB to be faster than 8TB for any reason? I remember reading something similar about 2015/2016 MacBooks where the 1TB version was faster than 2TB due to the system having to maintain and manage a larger drive.

M1 is PCIe gen 4, so the SSD won't go over ~7GB/s. 4TB gen 4 ssd's already reach that, so 8TB won't be faster. Unless apple cheaped out on their ssd's. Then there will be a difference.

I'm so happy that they added back the ports and the much beloved Mag Safe! However, I'm wondering about the elimination of the touch bar. I actually don't mind and kind of like it now. It seems that Mac has been really fighting making the Mac Book Pro Touch responsive. Now they've eliminated the touch feature all together. It might be that they don't want to compete with their own product line, the iPad? I doubt at this point that it will ever happen. But as a designer, the ability to draw on the screen would be huge! As for the notch at the top, I think this was a good design choice. It increases the screen real estate. And lets be honest about that point in the screen. The notch/camera has been integrated into the top navigation bar. Where as before it would have just been a grey bar. Also, All the newer iPhones have integrated that design aesthetic into them and I don't even notice it. Even when I' watching movies. I'm not ready to upgrade just yet. But these decisions to put back the things we loved about the previous generation Mac Book Pros is a good sign. Makes me excited to see what will be coming in the next few years. Until then, I'm saving my pennies. lol.

Touch Bar is amazing with some mods. I could never go back. Most game changing feature on a laptop in decades for me. Apple didn’t take advantage of it but the 3rd party apps for it are insane.

6:15 - you know why. They were using Intel's architecture and designs. They opted for higher performance versus extraneous ports. With the advent of their own silicon, they could do whatever they wanted in the VLSI.

Hey Marques, just an wanted to throw out an FYI/correction that Windows Hello requirements don't work with every day normal webcams. They are actually pretty strict and require some sort of depth/IR camera to do proper face detection.
