When we were kids, my now wife was playing Sapphire while I watched over her shoulder. She was in New Mauville, and as she was going down one of the halls, a very strange voltorb appeared. It was deep blue. Of course, we were really young and had no internet, so we couldn't possibly know how rare it was. We were both super excited anyway though- a voltorb, but in her favorite color. "It sparkled at me!!" I remember her shouting. So she caught it, named him 'Blue', and has it to this day! That's the memory I personally have of New Mauville 😂

The Adventures Manga’s interpretation of New Mauville is very interesting as well. It’s a myth amongst the townsfolk as a futuristic city built long ago but was lost somehow. While Sapphire (May’s counterpart) is on her way to Mauville, she notices as she’s walking that the ground beneath her feels different, so she punches it revealing a spinning hatch leading to a dark underground chamber. Before she has a chance to do anything else she’s swooped up by a bunch of robots built by the Trick Master & Wattson meant to catch a Donphan to help them search for the city. The two of them were searching for the city in hopes of preventing any future population issues and so the children of Mauville would have a nice place to grow up. In Sapphire’s frustration at the sight of Wattson’s lax nature as a gym leader when a group of kids come up to challenge him, she accidentally pisses off the nearby Donphan that the Trick Master & Wattson were after and it chases them, causing them all to fall down the hatch. When the three of them get up and look around to investigate they’re attacked by a giant security robot and once they take it down thanks to Sapphire convincing the Donphan to team up with her, it’s revealed that New Mauville was built by the Trick Master’s ancestor primarily as a giant amusement park for the children of the future.

New Mauville & Sea Mauville are contingency plans for Kyogre & Groudon weather-related disasters. The manga does a really good job at highlighting this. Really love the recent content covering the secret areas and side-quests of Gen 3. But include the manga context and it really adds another layer of depth to some of these spots.

@cis2210 ай бұрын
What's also interesting is that I think Pacifidlog Town is the very first optional town in the main series games. There's nothing to do there that directly ties to the main story. It seems that it only exists mechanically as some sort of reset button (by using Fly to get there) if you mess up the water current puzzle to the west when trying to unlock the Regis.

My guess with New Mauville in the original games is that it was almost cut content. They made this Power Plant lookalike dungeon (maybe intending another Magma/Aqua base), couldn't find a use for it, so they added a cave near Mauville and had Wattson show up to signpost their hard work. And yet it's still memorable to so many of us, myself included.
@evanmak783710 ай бұрын
God I loved the anime episdde with Wattson. Him having an existencial crisis over being 1-hit KO'd by a Pikachu and befriending a wild Electrike was so wholesome. The thing with Pikachu overcharging by the Raiku robot and getting that sick he could hardly move was a great touch into pokemon lore too. You could tell something was wrong when all of his attacks suddenly became so powerful.

@daccrowell477610 ай бұрын
I don't think we're done with Mauville... In ORAS, we find out that Sea Mauville was some sort of energy extraction project. Then New Mauville, which is the current power source for Mauville itself, was halted during development because of a not-that-well-explained issue involving Pokemon habitats... ...which is more than slightly odd. Were both new installations abandoned due to the same reason? Is there something under the Mauville area? Also in ORAS, you have Sootopolis. We know full well that there IS something under there, but consider the following: Sootopolis is inside a crater, supposedly the result of a meteor impact. Sootopolis definitely has something underneath it. When Groudon/Kyogre is released from the undersea location is was sealed in, it immediately goes to the underground area beneath Sootopolis. AND... AZ has been there before. The Delta Episode contains a reference to a peculiar tree that was planted there by AZ, under which we catch a glimpse of his Floette's unique flower. Now, it's a pretty safe bet that we'll be running across AZ in Legends Z-A. The primary locale for it is Lumiose, and this is where XY ended with AZ and his Floette reuniting. But if you remember, Lumiose is powered by satellite-harvested solar energy. However, there ARE two other power plants there that, from what we can tell, are sitting abandoned. Now, let's move forward. Does this pattern of "problematic underground energy sources" repeat? Answer: yeah, it sure does! First up, AZ's weapon required a large underground facility, which Lysandre has reclaimed. Then in Galar, the plot pivots around an underground energy facility that's being run in a VERY sketchy manner, utilizing Eternatus while it's encased in a stone orb (which we see the remnants of), connecting it to something that looks like a large array of huge tubes...specifically, tubes that resemble rectifier tubes that are real-world things. And then, we see loads of manmade structures in the bottom regular level in Paldea's Great Crater. In all three of those instances, we see abnormal geology. Crystals have overrun whatever the Great Crater's facility was. Eternatus is contained in a black and crystalline sphere prior to that being destroyed (which is also reminiscent of Reshiram and Zekrom's "stones", albeit MUCH bigger). And while Kalos doesn't appear to connect Xerneas or Yveltal to anything crystalline, it IS where we first encounter these in-battle transformations...all dependent on crystalline objects. In Kalos's case, we have the Sundial...and it looks like a chunk out of the same crystals in the Great Crater (as well as the crystals in the lake in Kitakami and possibly the strange ball in Blueberry Academy's Terarium). So...yeah. There's some common threads linking all of these. And next, we have Z-A. Involves Zygarde (very crystalline in appearance), probably AZ, possibly jumping around in time, centering on Lumiose City, which brings us all right back to Kalos and the Weapon. And one other point about Galar: was Eternatus part of a Galarian counterpart to Kalos's weapon? One which, instead of using the energy drawn from many Pokemon, used the energy of a single powerful legendary Pokemon and a device to amplify its own energy? To me, after my quarter-century with the game (I quit referring to the versions as individual games somewhere around Gen 7), this REALLY looks like an ongoing subplot which is going to make everyone's jaws drop to the floor WHEN (or if) it all comes together. And as for that, recall a few Directs back to how Game Freak was saying how Go links to Let's Go links to the mainline titles...and one guy there quietly mentions that "eventually it'll all be the SAME GAME" (my caps for emphasis). Generation 10 (which is expressed in Roman numerals as "X", after all) might be one helluva ride. There's too many potential links to suggest otherwise.

This made me think about the potential of a Backrooms-like game (or maybe an analog horror video?) that takes place in New Mauville. A maze of mostly-empty rooms, cardboard boxes strewn about and left to rot, harsh fluorescent lighting, the buzz of strange machinery; and instead of the Backrooms' carpet, it has a hard tile floor, meaning the sound of every step you take would echo through the corridors... and you have no idea who or what might be down here with you. (I prefer the psychological horror of not knowing what's in there versus the horror of specific entities chasing you, BUT I could see MissingNo. somehow playing into this scenario)

I might think they might have to add one of the Galarian Starters, one of the two Unova Starters minus Oshawott, and one of the Hoenn Starters fit on the past Kalos era for Pokémon Legends Z-A.

I was not aware of it originally being a maze complete with switches you had to find and press to unlock doors. But at least the remake upgraded it lore wise and definitely with Sea Mauvale replacing the Abandoned Ship and being a complete overhaul. Even serving as Mirage Spots for encountering Ho-Oh and Lugia on the top and bottom most floors respectively. Beey symbolic and for many like me who started with Gen 5, this was our first ever exposure to the custom Battle Themes for Ho-Oh and Lugia as we missed out on the Johto Remakes which were the original first and only time where these Legendary Pokémon had their own custom battle themes like every game from Gen 3 onwards.
