I was literally just thinking this! I foster dogs and not knowing their background or knowing they have trauma means I need to be super flexible with structure and training. I'm always open to new techniques and really appreciate your training philosophy.

I used these principles to introduce my older puppy to a dog park. We just sat in the car and watched for awhile, then observed from outside the car, then finally introduced to the other dogs. Fortunately, all were dogs of similar size and age. The nice thing is these general principles can be applied to a variety of situations

Ive been teaching my Pup Maria Sit and come for the past two weeks. She has realy gotton the sit cammand down and is starting too get the come command down. Ive had a neighbors dog helping me too get the extra energy out while still getting her to come too me on command. I just need too be a littler more relaxed with her and the training. I still want it too be done and over with. Butt just as Zak has said I need too be mindful that she is still a living being and I need to go at her pace.

I am loving all your videos. We will be getting a band new puppy in 1 week and love that I have a rough idea on what to do now. The problem I have is I grow up with Labradors and my mum breading them and our dogs being trained by my mum and me not having to do any of the training. Now I am all grown up myself and brought my first house it's time to get a dog and I have no idea what to do other than how to make them sit. With all your great advice I am very confident I will be able to at least start and grown with my dog training. Just a little side note. I watch your videos early in the morning before anyone in my house wakes up and wear head phones. At the end of your videos, you introduce music and it gets me thinking one of the kids are up and I take the head phones off to check. Secretly I think you are training me lol. Thank you,

Another awesome video, Zak! Your content makes a world of difference in people’s lives and I hope you and Bree take the time to celebrate that now again. Watching this humbly as I see all the little ways my novice, bleeding heart created more work for myself with my near two year old mini doodle. Have to have a good laugh at myself though, when you know better, you do better. Anyway, blah blah blah the point of this post is to thank you for everything you do to dispel the myths that dog training has to be negative, scary or aggressive. I recommend your videos all the time. 💗 PS. I notice Kona is only 13 weeks here but obviously cleared by her vet. Do you know if she on some kind of fast tracked vaccination schedule I should know about so that I can maximize the extra weeks of public interaction to desensitize and socialize before a puppy hits the fear stage? I had to wait 16 weeks with my guy.

Kona is exceptionally good at this. Not an overly distracted puppy at all. My pup is going to be a lot of work..... her focus is improving at home but leaving the yard she gets distracted by EVERYTHING. Very reactive when she sees dogs, vehicles, etc.

I had a puppy for a week that I got from a shelter. We had to put the puppy down last week. It had Parvo. We brought him home and he got sick a couple days later. He got it from the shelter.

So sorry to hear that. Just heartbreaking. Before you bring another dog in, bleach clean everything very thoroughly as the parvo virus lives on things for up to 7 years. You don’t want your next puppy to get sick from your first and for you to have to go through this gut-wrenching heartache again. My thoughts are with you.

are you spying me and my dog? lol I needed so much this video!!! I have a HUGE problem! Maia is my 4 months old chihuahua. She can: come back, sit, lay down, roll over, play dead, high five, shake, spin, speak when I ask her to, hide (she puts her front legs on my arm and hides her head between them), walk with me (staying between my legs and putting her paws on my feet) and do the “slalom” between my legs. She does all these things outside too, without any problems. Yup, I think she’s pretty smart! 10/15 minutes per day of training were enough to teach her all these things.. My problem is when there are ppl near to us. These days in fact, she seems to refuse to listen when there are strangers around. She didn’t used to be this stubborn! She LOVES cuddles and people love to pet her..so she won’t listen to me, when someone is playing with her. She literally runs towards everyone, to be petted. I think it’s because she’s getting more used to the environment. I don’t know what to do! If there is another dog and I call her and ask her to stay, she does it and waits for my okay to go play... but she loses the concentration with people. If I call her and then walk away, she won’t come. When we’re alone, she’s always with me and runs if I whistle or say her name. I’m afraid she just had enough of me and commands and won’t listen anymore!

Many dog owners don't practice any basic behaviours before introducing their puppies to other environments and expect the puppy to behave normally. Changing locations and environments within a few months from each oher and working on the basics is a must.

That stairs portion reminded me of the two pomernarians I had as a child. The male one had no idea how to climb down the stairs. The female one figured it out really fast on her own and got impatient waiting for her mate to get downstairs. So she got back up and shoved him off 😂😂😂

I had such a hard time teaching my newest rescue the stairs. Even after a few weeks it want working, so I had to carry him (60lbs by the way) up and down the stairs 4 times a day!! As soon as he had his entroipion surgery done, he flew up and down those stairs no problem!! I actually started crying. I didn't realize how blind he was with his eyelashes pointing inward, it must have been super painful. Poor wee soul.

I was curious about that myself - I used to love retractable leashes when I walked dogs. Then I did a google search 'retractable leash and dog training' - apparently there are a lot of reasons not to opt for retractable leashes (dog safety, encourages pulling, etc.)

I want to have a dog for the first time (I'm really interested in german shepherds, rottweilers and dobermans), however many people keep telling me they're not good dogs to have for a first time but I've read many owners who speak really good of them. Hey @Zak I have been watching a lot of your videos and bought both of you books but I am slightly concerned about exercising my new puppy. I live in a small apartment and I don't have enough space to do proper indoor fetch sessions to burn her energy out. Also I live in a highly traffic area with lots of people, cars and other dogs nearby which makes me very worried if I have to burn her energy by doing long walks.
