How do they get a petrol V8 pass the EU WLTP fleet emissions requirements? Is the petrol V8 within the 95 g CO2/km fleet average required in 2021? One worries that EU WLTP rules give too many breaks to large vehicles, while being overly punitive against economy vehicles. The old Range Rover Sport is 324 g CO2/km on the combined cycle which is extremely poor, even compared to other 5.0L V8 vehicles (usually in the low 200 range).

It was difficult selling my 2011 supercharged but I couldn’t pass up a 2006 Supercharged last year with only 28,000 original miles. That is now my primary car that I should be able to drive for the next decade or more. By then the new model now should become much more affordable so I can skip over last years highbred altogether. Though the technology is there along with its superior off-road capabilities, range rover seems to be slipping away from any sort of rugged look whatsoever. At 63 I guess I’m just old school.

I agree (and I think Harry secretly does as well.) He hinted as much when he reviewed his L322 & compared it with the new model. He appreciated the manual mechanical features of the L322 (tailgate etc) and the manual buttons, compared with the extra electrics and LCD controls of the new model (extra potential for failure.) He also appreciated the better all-round visibility of the L322 with the deeper screen and windows, and preferred its narrower width (he said the extra 200mm width of the new one makes parking and driving narrow roads more difficult, and that means more bodywork scratches from trees and bushes when passing other vehicles in a confined space.) I own a 2002 L322 which I bought for 13000 Euros in 2009 with no service history, so I expected to replace a few parts when I bought it. It’s the 3.0 TD6 which is less popular than the 2006 version (3.6/4.4) Harry has, but the 3.0 BMW engine is fine unless you want to break speed limits. Now it has new gearbox, new front suspension, new turbo, new injector, new brake discs all round, new fuel pump, new wiper motor, and is fully professionally rust proofed, it’s the best example of its year, drives beautifully and I love it. If I ever change it I will perhaps buy a later L322, maybe 2011/2012, but not the new shape. I think LR got it right with the L322. In the same way, Toyota got it right with the previous Land Cruiser but the new one looks like a bus by comparison, and Mitsubishi got it right with the 3.0 Shogun, compared with the newer one which looks like a Noddy car with those excessive curves!

So Harry, seeing you've owned 9 of them so far, what's your real life experience with reliability throughout the years? There's so much talk in the market about how horrible any landrover product is in that regard, yet they sell tens of thousands of units a year. Could you do a video on that?

@@worldofrandometry6912 haha which video did they dig a hole and bury it?!! that's brilliant. In seriousness I agree - Land Rover really need to get out in front of this story and sort the reliability with some sort of statement or reassurance. The new tech on this would terrify me as an existing owner. I love it all, but is it going to mean my six-figure pride and joy will spend ages off the road?

I recently changed my Subaru Outback after 25 years of Subaru ownership largely because they don’t, currently, do either an electric or hybrid which suits our needs. It was sad to see it go but cars have moved on. My wife loved her previous Volvo estate and so we tried an XC40 Recharge and this she loved. It has only done just over a 1100 miles and in the first 650 achieved 134.98mpg and for 95% of its use it was on electric. We’ve just been to visit a relative in Cornwall and it ended up with us having to top up the tank as we always fill at the halfway mark after some 200 miles and it had recharged the battery up to its 80% limit on recharge. This was the first time we had put petrol in it since we bought it! It’s quiet comfortable and meets all of our needs well and we were very pleased with its overall economy. The only snag so far is that we were promised a charger fitted at their cost but the waiting list 4/5 months which is not good. This as I understand it and after several emails and telephone calls is due to the lack of chips for the charging unit. I hope that the sighting of charging units etc gets better but with a recharge car this is not a problem for the rare occasions that we undertake long journeys. So all in all despite my fears that this was going to be an expensive mistake I have to say that I’ve changed aged my mind and now really like the car and it’s performance. It’s ride and handling is good and when combined with its comfort I will probably go for the same again if I change it! Thanks for the video on the Range Rover it was very interesting but far too big and indeed expensive for me!

I live on a mountain, next to a Prarie, with lots of ice, snow, sand, rock crawl roads, and I make two 500 mile hiway drives a month. I think I will be like you, and be a serial driver. I have lived in the Rocky Mountains, and I know all the off road/hiway vehicles that are out there, and Range Rover is the best for the price with options no other car offers. The 2022 can wait a year or two, and then I will not feel like I jumped a year!!!

Great information thank you. I keep a 4.6 HSE P38 in the UK as a hobby car. It is the only car I have owned that I enjoy driving long distances in. I find the P38 interesting because it pioneered quite a few of what are now everyday features on cars. That said it takes a lot of different skill sets to keep it running, but spare parts are really cheap. I have driven the P38 diesel and it wasn't a patch on the V8.

Soo many new features to break😉 Door handles, door actuators, door opening engines, door sensors...😉 I'm making a little bit of fun of the brand but LR had quality issues with a new Defender, I wonder how intense were they testing the car and it's components. Looks great for all but one angle, the rear. I like the rear end of the ongoing Range Rover much better than the brand new one. Somehow I think the new one's rear feels incomplete. Edit: I think that L322 is still the best looking Range Rover they have built so far, and yes I agree with you that's it's iconic. The L405 and the new one also look good but they lack the ultimate blend of brutality and sophistication of L322. Definitely my favorite so far.
