There are only three things NeoCons dissent against: 1. Paying their share in taxes for the greatness of the country's infrastructure. All while claiming that college educated software engineers who make $100k somehow are paying less in taxes than their shitty $35k per year coal mining dream job, and ruining the country. 2. Using your freedom for anything but being armed, straight, viciously nationalist, and protestant. Because, you know.....FREEDOM. 3. Anyone else coming here to get some of that Freedom who isn't as white as Julian Assange.

+Ryne Green As far as I know, this quote has been misattributed to Jefferson and the original source is unknown - which doesn't change anything about it being correct, of course. BTW: There's a similar quote from Carl Schurz (Secretary of the Interior under President Hayes) which IMHO drives the point home even more: "Our country, right or wrong! When right, to be kept right; when wrong, to be put right!"

coolfizz09 as a German exchange student (and being to the US about once a year) I can confirm that. It's like everyone forgets what it looks like when they don't see it 10 times an hour.... But more than thag, the pledge of allegiance every single morning. Kinda creeped me out everytime, had something of an indoctrination we Germans usually only see from old ww2 footage...

Its very common on the Sentimental right of politics. In all countries I've seen this kind of thing. The Right in Britain talks about the country as though its a garden. They associate rural with innocence and the garden of eden etc. It doesn't seem to matter that the UK has been heavily urbanised since the victorian age.

They would see New Yorkers as "true americans" if New Yorkers acted like they did in the 50s ala "Mad Men" with their martini lunches, ethnic jokes, and treating women like servants. Republicans honor whomever still lives in the pre-civil rights era America, which just happens to be rural america because most of them haven't caught up to the 21st century.

And they say they care for the life of the unborn, but don’t want to help women pay for pre-natal care. Oh but got have your viagra, right you two faced NON CHRISTIANS! And to prove your point further; if a woman was ever pregnant, then that is a pre-existing condition. WTF? GTFOH! Says the people who get 100% free Health insurance that we, the taxpayer, pays for! As far as these cretinism are concerned, women only matter when they are in control of them and they can get their dicks off. As a side note; Boehner crying like that ruins any day! Talk about the biggest snowflake. He is almost as bad as #1 Liar-in-Chief, who is so sensitive and thin skinned that he continuously goes after a grieving widow. Pathetic, the lot them!

I've been doing it in school since like 1995. Always found it pointless and almost like a brainwashing ceremony to instill nationalism into us ever since i was a kid. I grew up in the years of anti-communist hysteria of the 1950s and 60s, when we were regularly frightened on television by the elaborate displays of government-sanctioned rote-patriotism from the Soviet Union and Red China. So I was always amazed when America had us doing the same thing in school with the Pledge of Allegiance. I remember wondering why it was necessary to brainwash _American_ children into supporting their country. I mean, _we_ were the good guys, right? (And yes, we did try to be. Even today, I haven't completely given up on my country.) I understood why the Soviet Union did that, but why did we emulate them? Why didn't we just read the U.S. Constitution - or even just the Bill of Rights - and be taught _why_ we were lucky to live here? I still don't understand it. And now, Donald Trump wants to bring back those old Soviet Union military parades (or the current displays of North Korea), except in Washington D.C.! What has happened to us? (It is not Donald Trump supporters I blame, but every single American who couldn't be bothered to vote _against_ these people.)

Why is the national anthem even played at DOMESTIC sporting events anyway? I other democratic countries it is only ever played at INTERNATIONAL sporting events, where the players actually ARE representing their country. This piece of peculiar, saccharine American jingoism only started in after World War II (some teams had used it at special events before then). Interesting, the History Channel page on the subject ends with: "The anthem’s adoption also gave way to a new American pastime, almost as beloved as sports itself: complaining about people’s behavior during the national anthem. By 1954, Baltimore Orioles general manager Arthur Ehlers was already bemoaning fans he thought disrespected the anthem by talking and laughing during the song. Ehlers briefly stopped playing the anthem altogether, before relenting to pressure and reinstating it a month later."

Tribalism(nationalism) gives weak people a group sense...the feeling of belonging - They need social empowerment because individually they lack it. Thats why I always say rightwing politics is all about emotions, from the angry rhetoric to the superiority ideas of tribalism to their overusage of tribal symbols - Its always rooted in emotions, how it makes them feel good about themselves.

Federal law stipulates many aspects of flag etiquette. The section of law dealing with American Flag etiquette is generally referred to as the Flag Code. Some general guidelines from the Flag Code answer many of the most common questions: The flag should be lighted at all times, either by sunlight or by an appropriate light source. The flag should be flown in fair weather, unless the flag is designed for inclement weather use. The flag should never be dipped to any person or thing. It is flown upside down only as a distress signal. The flag should not be used for any decoration in general. Bunting of blue, white and red stripes is available for these purposes. The blue stripe of the bunting should be on the top. The flag should never be used for any advertising purpose. It should not be embroidered, printed or otherwise impressed on such articles as cushions, handkerchiefs, napkins, boxes, or anything intended to be discarded after temporary use. Advertising signs should not be attached to the staff or halyard. The flag should not be used as part of a costume or athletic uniform, except that a flag patch may be used on the uniform of military personnel, fireman, policeman and members of patriotic organizations. The flag should never have any mark, insignia, letter, word, number, figure, or drawing of any kind placed on it, or attached to it. The flag should never be used for receiving, holding, carrying, or delivering anything. When the flag is lowered, no part of it should touch the ground or any other object; it should be received by waiting hands and arms. To store the flag it should be folded neatly and ceremoniously. The flag should be cleaned and mended when necessary. When a flag is so worn it is no longer fit to serve as a symbol of USA, it should be destroyed by burning in a dignified manner.

Red Button TV1 And there is nothing saying it isn’t allowed. Almost everyone of these “so called “ Americans do almost everything the code book says it isn’t allowed. Kneeling is the highest form of dignity and respect and to say otherwise is a stain on our rights!

I think giving felatio is the highest form of dignity and respect but to each their own. Honestly, if they all mimed sucking on a dick I think it would have sent an even clearer message. Fuck the flag, these days it only spreads nationalism to a violent degree.

The flag is supposed to represent ideals right? Sure, it represents democracy and freedom of speech, but sometimes a symbol carries the sacredness of those ideals. It becomes a tangible manifestation of them. So I can understand where some Americans are coming from. (Edit) I'm not saying the flag is beyond protection. I'm simply stating the argument some conservatives have...

First off, thank you for your service. Secondly, I whole heartedly agree with you. This is the same type of rhetoric which contributed to the Plebian riots of Rome and Greece. I'm not calling flag defenders plebians , I'm calling Trump a demagogue.

Was that, "Thank you for your service" a reflex, or did some neurons above your brain stem actually fire?

I'm sorry that showing appreciation for a serviceman offended you. And it's not like he spent 6 weeks in ROTC, the man spent 20 YEARS of his life in the Navy. I don't know you, maybe you're a jaded veteran or just an 'edgy' intellectual but either way, I didn't think it would hurt to show respect... Also it was a reflex, just like its a reflex to ask someone who's crying if they want to talk or if they want a hug. Probably has something to do with being a human idk... Feel free to fuck off though :)

It hurts because this lionizing of the military feeds the military industrial comp!ex. It creates an environment where the invasion of the wrong country (that didn't have WMDs and had nothing to do with 9/11), that cost three TRILLION taxpayer do!lars, and resulted in the deaths of a couple of hundred thousand people, becomes difficult to criticize for fear of accusation of distressing the military. Those who serve in the military should be respected. Just not in a trite, parroted manner that has created its own political correctness. Where NOT saying "Thank you for your service" (those exact words repeated by rote only - don't go actually thinking and come up with something sincere that you spent time to express in your own words) is frowned upon and thought of as dangerous. There are many other people that serve this country. Why doesn't this faux gratitude extend to them? If you meet a sanitation engineer who scrapes your crap off the sewer walls (this is a dangerous career) to keep our cities free of the kind of epidemics that used to be commom, do you thank them for their service? How about thanking a teacher for their service? It may not be a physically dangerous job, but it's one that without which the country that we love would be lost.

My parents are Republicans and couldn't care less about all the stuff that Bill is talking about. There's a lot of conservatives that simply care about smaller government and lower taxes. One thing that's preventing bipartisanship is one side lumping the entire other side together in one group without nuance or subtlety.

with all due respect - opinions like this can be as divisive - i'm not a republican, i can't stand Trump - but i love and respect our military - i love the countryside, i own a barn, i smoke a shit ton of weed... and i own a pair of cowboy boots - and they're totally badass - the young men and women who faced the horrors of war didn't die for our national anthem - or our flag - they died so we could have the freedom to take the knee and challenge poor leadership in the same way poor leadership was challenged at the birth of this incredibly awesome country of ours - APE

I think Bill said right-wingers used people's fixation on those things as a prop to create false narratives...like when athletes kneel, they want to protest police brutality, and certainly don't have stuff like flags, anthems, military on their mind...however, FauxNews kept pushing phony theories 24/7 anyway. also, liberals don't even care about saying/not saying 'happy holiday/christmas' but evangelical lunatics nonetheless jumped out of it and voluntarily claiming to be 'disparaged'

MOUTH OF THE APE this joke is just devisive for fetish patriots who admire a flagg or an anthem without admiring the ideals these things stand for. As you proved yourself with your very nice comment - there is no problem with loving farms or cowboy boots as long as you love freedom of speech with the same passion :)
