Unfortunately, Bill is exactly right. I live in a rural area and there are many good people, values, and positive things about that, but I do understand Bill & other urbanites contempt and disdain for many of the negative aspects of rural America. The naïveté, the close mindedness, and a sort of sheltered ignorance that is somewhat common. During the campaign, and even for a few months after the Inauguration I gave many Trump voters the benefit if the doubt about many of their motives for voting for him. Not so much anymore, one lie after another, one broken promise after another yet most STILL support this disgusting man, I don't get it. It really does disturb me, this slavish cult like behavior in many of his supporters. Trump plays to their most base and ugly instincts. I could go on and on. Lol.. Bill has definitely come upon a very insightful truth.. Brilliant.

On this one, I really have to agree with Maher! In Switzerland, we have the same phenomenon. In Swiss cities, where the percentage of foreigners is at its highest people are most likely to vote liberal. In the country, where there are hardly any foreigners, people are most conservative. What is really at stake is that city people are more educated and country folks are working class. Intelligent equals liberal; dumb goes conservative!

I agree with you! Once we begin to meet people from certain nations, we automatically develop a positive image of their culture and we begin to appreciate their values. If we don't have any contact to foreigners (as is the case in certain rural areas), all we have is a hateful rhetoric that flows through our conservative media and our provincial village meetings.

@Bryzz Lull: Yeah, that's the ultimate argument winner! "You're an idiot" - which by the way you misspelled - cannot be argued with. It proves that you are entirely correct about this debate and that you explained the political issue at hand to such a degree that I cannot come up with any counter argument. In fact, I'm afraid I'd better pack my bags and retire from being a "KZbin commentator". Congratulations on that!

@17sunnyhour: I'm sorry, but this discussion was about the drift between city dwellers and country bumpkins and how people who live in the city tend to be more liberal despite higher crime rates and a larger population of foreigners. In a second comment, I tried to explain how social interaction with foreigners tends to endear the local people to immigrants. Finally, I replied to Bryzz Lull's comment "Yeah youre an idiot" by sarcastically claiming that "you're an idiot" is always the ultimate argument winner (which it is obviously not). At what point was the topic about women going from ladies to sluts? Are you on the wrong thread or did I seriously miss a metaphor here?

This is no joke. Last year I was at a gas station in Pennsylvania, and a Trump miner was arguing with the Hillary cashier. I said that mines are inevitably getting played out, and the miner unloaded a "secret" that all you have to do is take some charcoaled wood, put it in a mine for 90 days, and there'll be a new seam of coal. And he told me to look it up! Desperation plus bigotry (and some voter suppression) equals Comrade Tramp as our Supreme Leader.
@monkeymouse
@monkeymouse 6 жыл бұрын
Bryzz Lull Read up on Kris Kobach, Kansas Secretary of State, and his "voter fraud" crusade, which is in practice a way of getting Democratic voters thrown off the rolls before the election to stack the deck for the GOP. They keep their hands clean by handing out "provisional ballots", but they don't get counted unless it's a tight race, and by disallowing registered Democrats the race will never be tight; Catch-22.

It's the same anywhere in the world, a cultural divide between the urban and rural. Rural communities tend to be conservative, more about preserving a simpler way of life, whilst urban areas tend to be more liberal, embracing difference and change more easily. It's not right to call the rural types less educated, but you have to sell everything differently to them.
@ho2cultcha
@ho2cultcha 6 жыл бұрын
i think you are giving rural people too much credit. they are less educated - formally - by far. they tend to make decisions based on how the world used to be, rather than how it is. i am from the country, but have lived in many cities around the world now, and i believe this. and i don't think city people are any better than country people. but they are much, much more educated - for whatever that's worth.

The thing is that there is a disparity between what the city values and what the country values. It's not that people are against multiculturalism out here. It is just a non-issue or priority, just like how land disputes don't really happen between residents in the inner city. In the country, even when your neighbors are significantly different in terms of culture you really do not have to interact with them. 'Neighbor' has a completely different connotation in the country than in the city. I live at the edge of a small city and my neighbors moved from the inner part, it drives me up the wall how they keep walking on my property. It's a difference between how city and rural cultures view land: it's as if all outdoor space in the city is treated as fair game, and in the country it is considered trespassing even if there isn't a fence or posting. I try to be understanding, but it just feels as inconsiderate as if they were to invite themselves through the front door. The countryside is geared more towards self-sufficiency while the cities are more geared towards community. It's not because the cities are weak or the country is self-centered, it's because the environment is such that you have to fend for yourself in the country and you have to work with others in the city, both of which have pros and cons. It's all about the distribution of space and people.

Except Bill would say, "no, you're wrong...rural Americans are just toothless retards". You can be as cordial and polite as I know country folk to be (my own family runs many farms throughout rural PA)...but the big city folk will always look down on those who put food on their table. It's mind boggling.

I think at the end of the day, no matter where you go you will find idiots, chauvinists, and other kinds of ignorant people. You'll find people in the country who turn their noses up at some of the stuff that happens at a block party just like you'll find people in the city who scoff at the idea of a tractor pull. I don't really even consider myself a proper rural person, I see myself as more of a suburban type... But I live near a small city-also in PA-where if you go pretty much 5 miles in any direction from the center square you find yourself in the middle of a cornfield. It's weird because you get to interact with people from both urban and rural backgrounds. Ultimately, once you get down to just the sensible people you start to see the problems that they consider important tend to be endemic to where they live. People are more or less the same, they just have different problems. At least in my experience. That all said, while I don't think that the average city person has a particular contempt for country folks, it's definitely true that the popular media has been perpetuating this idea that people who don't live near their ivory towers are just completely backwards absolutely bigoted hicks. There is a conflation of a lack of concern with urban issues and direct opposition to those issues. It's not that country folks HATE minorities, it's that people just want to be left alone and not care altogether. The primary ethos seems to be more or less that if everyone focuses on what they need to do for themselves, then everyone's needs will be met.

infinitude They did let go of hillary and went on to medicare for all and trumps muslim ban. Hillary didnt let us go n shat on us n continued to smear us in her shitty book tour of "what happened". We thought she was in the woods but she came out screaming "Bernie, bernie bros, where r u? i've got some complaining to do" and bill maher is joining her in the complaining a little bit too much.

Hillary had a few pages about Bernie, out of hundreds, but oddly enough they're the pages which Bernie supporters cling to because they need to be outraged about something. She spent far more time in the book talking about the flaws in the campaign (which her critics say she never owns up to), the uncertainty in the middle class that led to Trump, Russian and Republican lies, and so on and so forth. The Bernie Bros are similar to the Trump supporters who only read sensationalist news. They have no context for anything. They don't see her few pages of criticism of Bernie in an entire book as a small part of what she said the problem is among many, much bigger parts, but as her blaming her loss on Bernie. Grow the fuck up. Act actually scholarly for once. Read the entire book before you criticize it, instead of just reading the blog/website/cable news channel whose main purpose is to hone in on the most controversial things in the book so that they can drive views, clicks, likes, and whatever else this cesspool of a society has determined is "valuable" in discussions.
