It's so simple. On the new rails, the irons are welded. On the old rails, the irons are not welded but are laid in 'panels' rather like pieces of model railway track, but in sixty foot lengths. These panels are each bolted to the next using a pair of 'fishplates'. One plate is placed either side of the rail and four bolts hold the plates and rail in place, with an expansion gap left between the rails. Traditional sixty foot track lengths produce the familiar clickety-clack sound of the train wheels over the track joints.

How is the metal thermal expansion problem solved on welded tracks , there is no expansion gap?
@colebevans8939
@colebevans8939 5 жыл бұрын
@@mowtow90 The continuous rail is actually pretty cool. The way that it is built where I live is that it is laid in sections of up to 1/4 mile in length. Those rails are built for a certain average ambient temperature based on the location, then the joints every 1/4 mile are thermite welded so that an electrical current can be ran through the rails. That electrical current is actually what controls the signals on the tracks (If a train is occupying the rails, it shorts the circuit which will display a stop or slow signal for the block of track behind it). Anytime a rail breaks the circuit will also short and you know it needs replaced. That piece is then cut out and welded. Once it is all secured to the ties (often concrete now) with anchors, and the ballast is maintained expansion really isn't an issue, as rails already flex and bend from the weight of a train as is. It's like the highway of railroad tracks, speeds up travel and makes it safer, but is very expensive to build.

Well built tracks are just amazing. There's a part between Leipzig and Nürnberg in Germany where the train goes about 250 kph but feels like standing completely still. Then you open your eyes and the landscape is just zooming by. Incredible.

The way wheels splits from one track to another track is unbelievable at that speed. I wonder that wheels might slip out of track. That wheel and track designing is so brainy and accurate by engineers.

I think that's БДЖ-44.001 or 44.002 - it's Škoda-built БДЖ-44, but both numbers were modernised in Croatia by Rade-Končar plant - they received new rectifiers and new bodyshell. Also they recieved new monoblock wheelsets (without railway tire) and new braking rods, that were similar to Jugoslavian or Romanian ASEA-built locomotives (e.g. LE5100 or Rb1): these new mechanical parts are shown on this video.

draw an isosceles triangle, dimensions 125 - 11 - 125. The angle between the 2 radiuses, you take it, that's the angle of 1 bogie referenced to the other. The angle between 1 bogie and the locomotive is half the aforementioned angle.
