Cap'n Jazz was from Chicago. That's considered midwest for some reason but I don't think we should limit "emo" to midwest because there were a ton of good east coast and west coast bands in the 90's and beyond.Jaycee J.

They were Midwest emo, aka an indie rock band that took influence from emotive hardcore. Jimmy eat world talk about this the book on emo Nothing Feels Good, where Jim Adkins talks about being influenced by emo bands such as Current, Julia, Indian Summer, Still Life, Embassy, Plunger, and Split Lip. The movement Jimmy Eat World was a part of, alongside acts like Jejune, Braid, The Promise Ring, Boys Life, Giants Chair, Christie Front Drive, The Crownhate Ruin, Texas is the Reason, Boilermaker, Seven Storey Mountain, Brandtson, Camber, etc etc basically every band in this video, was a form of indie rock that borrowed sonic elements of emo, like the arpeggiated guitars, octave chords, and huge crescendos exploding into raw screaming, which was pretty much the core of emo. Most these bands abandoned that element though, the hardcore punk element that makes it emo, after their early releases, and played straight up indie pop rock. Even though they were still "Midwest emo" aka post-emo indie rock, they got the label of emo by the mainstream despite constantly refuting it (this is why then the fans of real emo bands started calling them screamo, but that didn't last very long before it also got stolen by the mainstream).

There is no such thing as a genre called Emo. It was an insult to describe post hardcore punk. These bands considered themselves to be post hardcore punk. Stop using this term for poseurs.
@kage66137 жыл бұрын
Jay Nice denying emo is the poseur move actually, unless you're in an emo band yourself, then you just say it's hardcore, even if you were playing indie rock like Sunny Day Real Estate. But seriously, most of these bands are actually indie rock.
@bluepinkman47855 жыл бұрын
Can't change the term man. It's like the emo subculture, the fashion statement. Whenever you say the word emo, what comes to our mind is the eyeliners and long hairs.
