Hi Eddie, remember me trailing through there with my Grandma back in the mid 70's when I was 6 - 7 and all I can remember from back then was the smell of meat as there were hundreds of Butchers in the Grainger Market with huge Pig and Cow carcasses hanging euuuw!. Also fruit stalls and Fish Mongers. Been through recently as a 50 year old and my has it changed, the amount of empty stalls is saddening.

Another lovely video reminding me of when I was a child and my mam and aunt would take me to Grainger Market to buy meat and game from Hector Hall. We would go thru to the Green Market and see plants and pigeons for sale. Loved going thru Central Arcade to visit Windows music shop. 🎶 My ma was from Newcastle so it was all home to her although we lived in Tynemouth. We would get the no 11 bus to Haymarket and have lunch out. What a treat. Bowers bacon and egg grill in the lane beside the Grainger Market lovely memories

If memory serves right, I once read how just prior to the building of Grainger Town being given permission that City had just completed the construction of an Opera House around the Nunn Street area. Realising that it could not be incorporated in the new plans it was demolished & I'm not even sure that it managed to host any performances! Personally, from the 60's / 70's I can remember the bodies of wild game hanging outside of butchers shops - not to mention a big stuffed Bull's head. And also the story of the hiring of Falcons(?) to scare away the pigeons which were proving difficult to shift by other means....
