Newell Coach Lug Nut Cover Upgrade and Some Polishing! (Should Have Done This Sooner)

Not exactly action packed but a simple little upgrade on my 1996 Newell Coach here. I have always wanted these style center caps for it. Even before I had a coach of my own I knew when I got one that I would want it to have these. Lots of Prevost coaches came with these style caps too.
It also makes the wheels exponentially easier to polish and keep clean!

To those concerned about the lugs coming loose in the comments: It did not look right to me either, so I reached out to a Newell tech and he said thats just how those things are. Every one he has taken off has had the bracket squished into the seat like that apparently. He said as long as it was torqued to 450ft lbs it'll be fine. I got the adapter and torqued them the day after filming this.... for those who were wondering we're all good lol

We used them on semi trucks for years with no problems until bs California made them illegal & we still use them till now without any issues but if it falls off you can hear it clunking around inside

Would the caps fit if you sandwiched the brackets on the outside of the original lug nuts with the bends facing inward? Then used another nut like a jam nut? Might have to grind the jam nut down thinner but I think that would be a better option. Just because someone has done it before doesn’t mean it’s safe. Hate to see something happen to the coach or yourself or someone else on the road.

Technically those a made for hub pilot wheels, which have a washer on the nut and would sit flush to the wheel. But you did a good job making them fit. Long as you torque the lug nuts you will be fine.

Tire guy here. Those hub caps look like they are for a newer style flat face lug nut "hub pilot" 33mm. The older style like you have is a "bud style" 1 1/2 wedge style. It seems like you might not get a good torque with that plate between the mating surface.

That bigass unit is looking AWESOME as ever... The front caps are the ticket....White Diamond polish is badass !! I use it and triple 0 steel wool to clean my billet wheels. Leaves the highest shine you have ever seen and they stay shiny for twice as long.

Get your torque wrench adapter asap and use it regularly as the holding plate you drilled is now distorted in the beveled hole on the aluminum wheel and might work the nut loose. Personally I think its fine but I would feel better checking the torque after driving it a short bit. Great video! I really like your RV!

Definitely makes a difference. Curious on those lug nuts though. They sure don’t seem to be very beefy. Pretty thin to be holding that much weight/torque but I guess Newell’s engineers know what they are doing. Like someone said earlier, watching your Newell videos makes me want to trade in my fifth wheel and get a coach. Someday

That front wheel is not hub piloted, it is a stud piloted wheel. Putting those brackets on a stud piloted wheel is a huge no-no. That bracket will interefere with the clamping force needed to keep that wheel firmly bolted to the hub. Please take them off, this is dangerous.

@@Stapleton42 Look to see if there are other types of wheel covers available. You can't have that bracket between the lug nuts and the wheel face. There is no way that proper torque can be held by the lug nuts with that bracket acting like a washer. You'll get wheel movement as the bracket gets flattened and thinned out due to eventual wear and the lugs lose torque as the space between the wheel and lug widens. As the lugs loosen the wheel will move ever so slightly front to back and start machining itself into the wheel studs. You'll get vibration as the wheels move around on the hub and elongate and oval out the stud holes on the wheel. If you're lucky you'll hear them as they fail, they sound like a rifle shot when they break and you can pull over. If not you can have catastrophic failure of the wheel studs and the loss of the wheel. One broken or loose lug is enough to have all the others on that wheel fail. Also while you are at it as the vehicle is older, check the threads on the wheel lugs to see if they are getting knife-edged. If they seem to be thin and sharp they need to be replaced as they cannot properly hold torque anymore and will eventually start to fail.

So what’s the market like on these older high end coaches? I had a 38’ bumper pull camper for years that we pulled with the XL Denali and the family (of 5) loved it. We didnt use it enough to justify the cost so we sold it. It was just a headache every time we hooked up to it. Plus it was too long to tag a boat behind etc. Just thinking something like this would be an easier way to go about traveling and having our own place to stay. I’ve written off the idea in the past because they come across pretty maintenance intensive. Definitely thinking about it again... plus my little girl loves how your Newell looks with the checkered flag graphics. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

I told the people what I had and this is what I got. It didn’t seem right to me either... I still don’t know what the correct bracket is for this type of lug. Everyone wants to point out what’s wrong and no one is offering solutions. Typical internet 😂

@@Stapleton42 The simple solution is to take off one of the rear clips and compare it to the fronts. Usually there is a hole relief slightly smaller than the taper of the wheel so the nut can tighten the bracket and the wheel together. As the nut pulls tight it will self clearance the small difference, but you do need to make sure the wheel nuts make full contact with the taper in the wheel, if it doesn't then make the bracket holes just big enough that they do. The bracket should be wedged on the taper of the nut, not in the wheel. Hope that makes sense.

I've always loved the looks of those T.Kane brand center covers as well. I've priced them a couple of times for our Dynasty but simply can't justify $1300-$1400 for 6 of them. I don't think those are the correct brackets. Those look like they're for a hub-piloted wheel whereas yours are budd style wheels which taper. Mike

Bro great vids but please don’t drive like that. Those are tapered lugs for tapered wheels made to center the wheel. If they can’t seat properly then the wheel won’t be centered on the hub and could vibrate as well as come off

If that’s the case then how do these caps go on this wheel? The bracket gets squished into the taper as you tighten it. That’s how the back is. It seems odd to me too but I’m not sure how else it works 😂

Don't think that's correct. Those are lug piloted rims. Those brackets should be used on hub piloted rims. Meaning the hub centers the rim and you use flat nuts on a flat rim. You have lug piloted rims which require the nuts to set into the rim for centering.

@@Stapleton42 Make the holes bigger so the lug nut seats properly (bigger than the nut) and the mount sits flat on the wheel, drill and tap a the wheel for few 10/ 24 screws and screw the bracket in place.
