Newtonhill Pipe Band surprise shoppers in Asda Portlethen with performances in supermarket

Newtonhill Pipe band, led by Pipe Major Domhnull McLennan, surprise shoppers in Asda Portlethen, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, as they parade through the store and play in the aisles on Saturday 9th June 2018. This was a fundraising project by Newtonhill Pipe Band, who have been invited to attend Amiens, France, along with 17 other pipe bands from across Europe as part of the “1918-2018 United Pipers for Peace” event, July 7-8, in commemoration of the bagpipers who participated in the Battle of the Somme in World War I.

There were many hiding down the aisles, but the bands are a real feature of North East Scotland and this is the only store that allows this, but usually only at Christmas.

I like pipe bands. My concern is that with millions of tunes available why is it that they play the same tunes all the time? Thanks! I must add, these musicians are very good! I could barely march with my kit. To march while playing an instrument must require a lot of talent. I hope you were able to raise enough funds for your trip. Honouring those who fought in battles and the civilians who suffered during that needless war is a very nice thing to do! Hats off to all of you! 👍

It's kind of a 'what does everybody know' sort of tune selection. This means all those basic marches and retreats top the list, with reels strathpeys and jigs making a second tier. Something as specialized as piobaireachd tends to be 'soloist playing from across the field or on the next hilltop' sort of presentations. These guys slung in a nice air into the set....
