I'm not sure I agree with the conclusion of this video. Ging's first impressions weren't just straight up revamped(except for the 1st chapter dialogue in the anime), his character is shown not to be the virtuous hero he was talked up to be, but part of the point is exactly that yes, Ging is the dude with the feats and absurd power, who has done some major wholesome stuff, but he's a morally sloppy wildcard just as well. It makes his character have this duality between ''the impression of the people who he has helped with his power and goals'' and ''the people he bothers with his sloppiness and egoism''

Even if Mito makes Ging give up his son, he could still choose to visit them tho. He could even do that in secret if she doesn't like his presence at all-he's THAT great hunter and she's just a normal woman. It's not like she would know if he comes to see his son every now and then. I remember reading about another father-son relationship in another fiction work. The father has been an alcoholic and an a* before the son starts his journey. But as soon as the son leaves home, the father kind of follows him in secret to provide some kind of protection because it turns out that he's one of the legendary figures in that world and he's worried about the son's safety. He only indulges in alcohol after the death of his wife. He's not that great as a parent, but the act does show that he actually cares about his son, just not in a cuddling way. Meanwhile Ging is being like: yeah Gon's in ICU I know alright... he's not gonna die tho because he's MY son. Nope, no need to get a glimpse of him because I'm busy- Being absent that entire time is largely Ging's own choice I'd argue.

People always talk about morality as if it’s black and white. Morally good for one culture can be consider completely evil for another. That’s what Hunter Hunter is all about. Ging still abandoned Gon, there is no getting around that. Mito said she forced Ging to leave. You're telling me that Ging unwillingly let Gon go just cause Mito demanded it? The difference is that in the manga, he did WANT to be a dad. That's the only difference.

That's true, but it's also kinda of the translation's fault. In the original, Mito says: 私が 裁判であなたの養育権を ジンから 奪い取ったの… Which would be more adequately translated as: In court, I took away the right to raise you from Ging. Which shows that external forces were involved (even though I doubt a person as powerful as Ging couldn't revert that). I started to learn Japanese because of hunter x hunter, cause I wanted to experience the original manga which I possessed, and now that I'm finally able to do that, I started to notice a lot more things, since I have only watched the 2011 version prior to this, and I have gained a lot more appreciation for this begging cause of that.

Can't really blame the dude for being a grumpy rude man over ten years later, and for not wanting to see the son he probably feels really guilty about having to leave behind cause no one thought he was good enough. i mean what happened would be soul-crushing to a loving parent which tbh we have no reason to believe he isn't.

Ging can (consistently) be both likeable and despicable. It has nothing to do with Togashi changing the character. - Some people had a god like memory of him (Kite, Razor for example). These are people who felt they were "saved" by him. - Some people are irritated by him (most of the Zodiacs for example). These people have to work with him and thus rely on him to responsibly carry out whatever duties he would have been assigned. He doesn't even show up to meetings so one can assume he was very sketchy on his "responsibilities" in the Zodiac group. It would matter very little to these people if he has god like Hunter abilities and saves other people's lives if he drags down the Zodiac's jobs by not carrying his own weight. - Some people are enraged by him (Leorio lol). These people have seen him through their friendship with Gon. A kid who has not once heard from his father even while lying dying in the hospital. Mito is not strong enough to make Ging do anything. He could have easily snatched Gon out of her arms and walked off. He did actually leave Gon on Whale Island and never once contacted him directly. He may have had his reasons, but he definitely did abandon his son. - Some people like him AND dislike him (for example Wdwune, or Dwun - who starts by introducing himself as Ging's friend and then angrily calls him a jerk and rants for many frames about it because Ging bullied him into changing his name). These people have experiences with Ging that touch on both his good points and his bad points. This is not poor writing or forgetfulness or retconning a character. This is actually a very realistic way of portraying a multidimensional character. Depending on who you are and how you have interacted with someone, you will have your own impression of him or her. In fact, Ging is not even the only character in Hunter x Hunter for whom multiple characters have entirely different impressions. It seems like Togashi has deliberately written many of the characters like this. It's one of the many reasons why I think HxH still allows for so much discussion. :)

Yep. No parent gets points for not being there. History is littered with monarchs that provided all sorts of resources to their offspring…yet never got around to parenting. It’s not the same as a deadbeat, but it’s shoddy parenting all the same.

I would actually say Ging's character is pretty consistent in the story. If you view it from a casual observer perspective where if you only know the surface level of his character (brash, blunt, and aloof to put it lightly) you can only see the rude irresponsible Ging. As you get to know him more you can't help but be in awe of his drive and ability. This is shown with the eventual acceptance from Beyond's team where Ging started off having the worst first impression. As somebody that had an actual mentor relationship with Ging, it would make sense that Kite held Ging in high regard as well. This falls apart a bit as Satotsu from the hunter exam had quite the high impression of Ging despite having never met him.... but can be explained if he only heard of Ging's achievements or heard about him from somebody else that had more intimate knowledge of Ging. Or his opinion was so high because he never met him. In any case. Great video. Love the content as always.

I actually have a small theory/head Cannon myself. I like to believe that gene had multiple children since he wanted multiple kind of successors so they can go to the dark continent or at least have a greater chance of going to the dark continent, at the end of the series, he says that he wants what he doesn't have, and it's most likely he did have multiple children so he could at least have a better of chance of going to the dark continent, plus, he said that he wants what he doesn't have, and if we're going with actual Canon here, gone is his only child, and son, most likely that he doesn't have a daughter, he would have a daughter since she doesn't have that or have multiple children in order to increase his chances of going to the dark continent. He didn't say what limits he has when going to the dark continent, he would have multiple children in order to increase those chances if one of his children doesn't end up going to the dark continents his life would have been for nothing. Well, of course, this is my theory. When referring to the anime a, of course, I have not read the manga, but gene in them, Anime seems like someone who is willing to accomplish his goal at any means necessary, no matter how long it takes, and even if that means having multiple children with may be multiple different women, he would do that in order to accomplish his goal.

Gon absolutely would not resent Mito for insisting that Ging leave him in the care of his grandmother and aunt because he knows that they both love him very much and took care of him and Gon's warped morality would cause him to view Mito as "a family member who helped me by raising me and enabled dad to go and do amazing things unhindered." As to the Ging who's built up versus the one we see, he's a mixed bag, split between the two ways we see people regard him. Kite and Satoz think the world of him as close student and dedicated colleague in the same field of study. Members of the HA in other fields tend to despise him because he usually makes no effort to interact respectfully with them and sometimes goes out of his way to antagonize them if he doesn't like them. The rest of his friends on the Greed Island team all greatly respect his vision and achievements but some of them (Dwun especially) can still be exasperated by his willingness to be completely unreasonable and arbitrary in pursuit of whatever he wants at that moment. Most of the people we see discuss Ging prior to his actual appearance have a slanted view of him emphasizing what's important to them about him where the real Ging as we see him operate isn't really any of those Gings but rather the split difference of all of those feelings about him.

You never go agaisnt the official canon story, that's basically saying F Togashi, Madhouse dropped the ball there and screwed up the 2011 anime beginning. The 1999 anime even the 98 pilot episode adapted the beginning the way it was suppose to be with Gon meeting Kite first. Best way way to watch Hunter x Hunter will forever be the 1999 version and all the ova's up to the end of Greed Island and then switch over to the 2011 version for the Chimera arc forward.
@ThatBoldStatement3 жыл бұрын
I've seen both. 1999 had a bit of filler that wasn't overwhelming. It also built tension and intrigue in a lot better way. The originals phantom troupe Chrollo capture arc was better and explored the psychology and moves more in depth. Unfortunately the Greed island arc wasn't done as well as the prior arcs in the original.. Both the ova original and 2011 made changes or neglected things in Greed Island. Actually I feel the 2011 version was an overall better Greed Island. Such as mentioning Aiai lightly for example. Also the originals Greed Island animation was pretty weak unfortunately. In the manga the Bellam brothers were mentioned as a possible issue as well. Mentioned by Genthuru and Goreinu. In the anime they showed up after Genthuru was defeated and glossed over.

I find it hard to believe that Mito can "make" Ging do anything. Mito could have told him to leave, but at the end of the day, it's Ging's choice to leave. No matter which medium you consume I believe Ging did abandon Gon, but maybe just the reasoning changes.
@killuel65783 жыл бұрын
@obi_oma3 жыл бұрын
@@killuel6578 | oh that's interesting. I think that gives Ging a bit more credit. Despite that, he did still abandon Gon since, A. If he, being someone with so much power physically and likely socially, wasn't even legally allowed to raise Gon, he must really not have cared enough about Gon to be an actual father, and B. just because you aren't legally allowed to raise your child, doesn't mean you have to vanish from their life. Ging basically went "you beat me in court, so I give up. Good luck raising him, I'm out." which is pretty bad. This is probably a result of HxH becoming a much different world than Togashi had initially intended because I can't imagine the Ging we know today in a court battle against Mito over Gon, and if he did care enough to even participate, there's no way he'd lose with the amount of power he probably has.

I don't think it's as much of a change as you think it is. If Ging didn't want to give up Gon, he didn't have to. What was Mito going to do, rip him from the arms of one of the strongest hunters alive? She told him to give her Gon because of how dangerous his lifestyle is, and he gave him to her. She didn't force him to do anything, she couldn't. Ging willingly gave him up.

I hope hunter x hunter will become some sort of rpg basically for some reason killua and gon meet up again to set out to the dark continent and they just keep exploring and stuff getting powerups and debuffs fighting creatures in there. I know im taking it lightly, but if you stretch it out it could work like that its larger than the continent everything up untill now has happened and for all that we know time, space, physics, nen could work diffrently, so if they get stuck there anything could happen, like for example they meet netero on one of his expeditions or they find the same fight he had vs meruem, his actions get changed somehow and he has the choice to return back into the world (if ite the fight against meruem he gets to choose it might be even cooler as evil meruem might get introduced even saying komugi survived and he spend his last moments with her wouldnt help as he killed her due to his radiation they would actually have to beat him) Hopefully its like an infinite anomaly the further down you go the wierder stuff gets, since everything is random stuff that can help you out exists (like super armour nen potions or like a pet or something), but it would be hard to survive and find it. The dark continent might even be scaled to how strong you are when everyone enters or the way gon gets trapped in there is special so gon not having nen wouldnt be a problem he might be shown the entrance to it and get transported by accident, some new nen mechanic could be nice like perhaps having his refined and super strong aura blocked makes him not age as its one of its abilities, so with time dialation by the time killua and everyone else make an expedition he could have been fighting dark continent creatures for an undefined amount of time barely alive by the end of it as he wouldnt have much to eat drink unless he finds something in the dark continent. By that point Gon has unlocked the use of his nen surpassing all humman limitations basically he can use the amount of aura he used against pitou without struggling his anti ageing stops as his aura is unlocked depending on how it happens he might have aged a little during the time he spent regaining the use of nen. Gon could then push and train nen even further since he would be that powerfull by just letting his aura out, without using any of the more refined nen concepts or pushing his limmits. What happened to gon could be used as a new training method (not sure how anyone trying it would forcably block thier own aura but i could see it happening) This would not only make killua catch up (timeskip perhaps), but would put the dark continent within the reach of other hunters in a few years (either timeskip till here or after gon and killua have thier first aproved expedition after killua catches up to gon in terms of nen ability and he would either deduction or gon telling him why he thinks he powered up to that extent, to do so he could use his almost life long friendship with gon as a nen rule to gain power the same way gon did and with the use of alluka restore his body just like it happened for gon basically recreating what happened to gon, then he trains untill he regains nen perhaps there is a reason he needs to do this relating to the dark continent and they set out for an expedition when killua first starts to regain nen).

But the first episode of the 2011 originally aired in October 2nd 2011, while the first chapter of the chairman election arc (chapter 319) came out in October 8th 2011, so that couldn't have been the intention of the anime producers with this deliberate change. Also, with regards to Ging's character "changing", I think chapter 1 still fits with what Ging ended up becoming, because it justifies Mito's behaviour of forcing Ging to leave Gon (because he was a bad dad).

The problem I always had will be the lack of just writing the story and finishing it... this story effectively started in late 90's you can't expect the story or the characters to stay "true" to their nature when the writer is inconsistent and takes these insanely long breaks. Whether this is a good thing or a bad things depends on whether or not the story ever comes to a conclusion. But the characters and their motivations even their initially story arcs are bound to go off their original course because the writer is no longer the same person. ina way it is upsetting

That's why u have to watch the 1999 version of the anime, not just because its infinitely better in visuals, but because it also gives a lot more foundation to the story and a more dark adult atmosphere to scenes instead of relaying in flashy colorful fights or cute uwu characters for 15yo kids
@Teddy_Gautier3 жыл бұрын
The answer is rather simple. You gotta go off of the character Ging ultimately became, so yes he did. You said so yourself, we can’t take whatever Togashi designed, in terms of a character, at the beginning of the story to mean much because he changed it up later on to be closer to what he really wanted to do. So yes, Ging did abandon his kid. Still, I enjoyed this video. Good work

This has been the most impactful video I’ve seen of yours, I had no idea mito originally lied. Honestly this was really important (forget that Ginn is portrayed as a bad person because of the change). For me, it affected my whole view of Gon’s initial rationale to embark on his dangerous potentially life altering journey. In the real world if someone cheats on you or abandons you and doesn’t want anything to do with you, you forget those people because you don’t need them in your life. Gone could’ve stayed in whale island fucking bad bitches and taking care of mito (which moto is both his mom/dad). The only way I was able to keep watching the anime even though this bothered me, was because I kept reminding myself that he’s just a kid that doesn’t know better.

I'd have to disagree with the conclusion that it was a good fix because it was "a better reflection of Ging as he would become." They just flattened his personality to "selfish asshole." He's a great hunter and a great person, but he's also abrasive because he's so independent and does whatever he wants/feels is right. When you have a character like that their reputation should be dependent on how close people really are to them. Those who only know his deeds will recognize his greatness without knowing his flaws, people he works with (especially people who may be a little full of themselves like the zodiaks) may dislike his stubbornness or resent his ability, but the people who REALLY know him (like Kite and his Greed Island friends) will be able to see past the abrasive exterior and recognize who he really is. When they change the story to tell us a firsthand account of him being a scumbag that isn't a good representation of what we had before, it was a reduction.
@ethanwilson10013 жыл бұрын
Personal Theory: Ging didn't abandon Gon; he gave him to Mito. Ging isn't really Gon's dad - remember the time Gon had a chance to listen to the real story about his mother from Ging on the recorded tape, Gon stopped the playback. An obvious block from us learning more clues about his origins. Gon is actually a rescued child from a previous (undocumented) journey to the Dark Continent and handed to Ging due to an apparent blood relation (or found artifacts found near Gon when he was discovered). TL:DR - Gon is really Don Freecs who ate too much Nitro Rice and regressed back to an infant body, and his ultimate goal is to return to the Dark Continent and finish writing the second Journal of the Dark Continent (West). Thoughts?

Alright everyone take notes, Ging is the best dad in all of anime change my mind. He is the only one that was able to raise a son and still was able to pursue his passions. A good example is that he knew whale island was a great leaning territory to being a hunter teaching him how to be silent, how to hunt, and survive by himself. At the same time all zodiacs are in charge of the hunters exam every year; therefore, Ging made the hunters exam to show off Gons skill set. Ex: hunting the pigs and eggs, being silent to hide from hisoka, and to think on his feet with the candle man. He was able to push his son and let him grow because he limited as many outside variables as possible and could have easily stopped the exam if he deemed he couldn’t passed like with the boat man. This is just one example of how he has been a dad from the sideliness and still discover more ruins every day!

I haven't read the manga so had no idea this difference existed, but after watching this I agree with the decision. I always loved how Ging was in the anime, and what I now know to be the end result of his character: a glorified figure who was certainly an incredible person but a selfish one with many, many faults. He's someone we're supposed to idolise, but begin to question whether we should respect him, and through that feel the tragedy of Gon focussing his life and soul around this man, who we knew was not what Gon hoped he was, with the eventually twist where Gon understood the truth all along but still looked up to his father for the admirable aspects of him. Mito didn't take away Ging's father, she gave him a loving childhood instead of one that would have killed any other child XD Probably not Gon but how was she to know that... The change conveys the same character traits as what the manga evolved into, in more consistent way. It strengthens Gon's character in his resolve to find his father anyway, and allows the audience to give Mito the respect she deserves, rather than see her as the early out of context child stealer. In either media, she gave up her own life to ensure someone else's son had a happy childhood.

@💗𝗙**СК МЕ - СНЕ𝗖𝗞 РR0FILЕ Yeah I think that's it, in the manga Mito makes that call; in the anime Ging but both had the same reasoning. Mostly anyway, either way I'm not defending Ging's parenting style haha, though I guess Togashi initially wanted him to be a more standard role model but evolved him into a more selfish character, and the 2011 anime decided to seed that from the beginning

my take on it is that yet mito did take custody over gon, but ging did *not* put any effort into defending himself or getting gon back, so it fits with the "yes he did abandon gon... but also no he didn't" i get why 2011 did what they did with ging, but i'm still very mad they cut every mention of kon and kite out of the story up until the chimera ant arc. and even so, they could have put a lot more info into the flashback. this leaves people who watched only the 2011 confused as to why gons drive to get kite back in the chimera ant arc is so strong because they don't know the sheer impact kite has on gons life. this is why i made my sisters watch the first episode of 1999 hxh to understand that reason better.

In the japanese manga panels mito says she won a court case for custody of gon, and thats what gon says he knew. And we do know that he had things set up for gon to find him if he wanted to. But he wasnt gonna force gon, who would have lived a life with his aunt, to search for him. Which adds another layer to ging as we know hes a rude guy who follows his whims and is known for being unreliable, but he respected the courts order, probably only because he respected mito, and respected gons choice to find him with his clues, or let it go.
