Alice talked to my mom for almost twenty minutes after we saw the show and it was so special. She lost her battle with mental illness, but I know that conversation meant a lot. I'm finally able to listen to this song again.

Gosh this is such a touching song. I have friend with an illness like this and ever since she started taking this new medication she has lost all of her personality. But without it she gives in to all these ticks that she is EXTREMELY self conscious about. People act like they know what they would do in that situation but you can never know until your in the position.

Well, to an extent I agree. 99% of the show is not very uplifting. But if you really listen to the lyrics of "Light," you can see how it would be uplifting. Even with that last chord, you can feel that everything will be alright kind of a deal. You get what I'm saying?

Just watched the London Donmar version. What different interpretations of the same song. I have to admit that Alice Ripley comes across as far more unstable here. But, I don't know if that's a good thing. And, her ever-present vibrato feels doesn't do it for me. Perhaps it's just what was popular a decade and a half ago? Anyway, talented lady. But, not a patch on the London version, imo. What else has Ripley been in? And, was it good?

@FuturamaFanatic825 Because Elton John did the score for Billy Elliot. That should be no excuse for a musical about a boy in ballet (not that there's anything wrong with it) who pales in comparison to a dysfunctional family, a bunch of weird doctors, and the spirit of a son who won't go away. Man. I agree. I love it too :D

Obviously you don't know much about stage acting. When you film a piece from a stage show it always seems like the actor is overacting because they are performing on stage. That's just the way it's done. And as for singing flat- you're right- her performance wasn't perfect. But don't worry- I'm sure you could do so much better.

@pudgeuncle I think this musical definitely deserved the Pulitzer, and so the psychiatry isn't right... can't we just enjoy the show at face value for how amazing it is rather than pick it apart?

Uplift (noun): the process or work of improving, as socially, intellectually, or morally. This is not an easy work--feel-good musicals stopped being the norm (no pun intended) years ago. Rent could be called uplifting and Angel dies, half the main characters have AIDS, and they're still struggling. I think for anybody dealing with mental issues or even just struggling with a bad day can look at this and say, "Hey, it's not just me."

@FuturamaFanatic825 The Tonys did get this one right. The Pulitzer is not the ultimate validation especially since crap like RENT also got the PP. The music to NTN is vacuous and indecisive in it's style while the lyrics are so poignant and refreshing. And the psychiatry of the show is not accurate.

I bet her replacement, Marin Mazzie, will give a legendary performance...as she always does and be far superior. I think Ripley is so overrated [boy did she deserve to be FIRED from Little Shop of Horrors, one of the most awful performances I ahve ever seen. And her Tony speech was so over-the-top....like she was getting the Nobel Peace Prize.
