@OfficialWhyRock722 I think Gabe is more a representation of Grief and how haunting,sneaky,sickly mischieveous,alluring,heart-renching,and menacing Grief can be when it gets ignored for years and treated like it's not there. It's all in Gabe's I'm Alive reprise, "I'll find you, remind you, until you name me, you can't tame me." Gabe isn't a ghost, Gabe is Diana's overly romantacized fantasy of what Gabe would have been had he lived, hence him being played by extremely dreamy Aaron Tveit.

@OfficialWhyRock722 I did a masterclass with some members of the replacement cast a while back, and that exact question was asked. Their interpretation was (and they admitted that it hadn't ever been fully explained to them) Diana definitely had mental problems, but Gabe appeared to her because he knew she wouldn't be taken seriously. Personally, I think that Dan saw Gabe a few times before I Am The One (reprise) as it would explain the line "Why didn't you go with her?" I think he was a ghost.

I love the interpretation that Dan DOES see Gabe the entire time but is intentionally ignoring him until he no longer can at the end of the show. But also that there are perhaps select moments where he does acknowledge him
