This is another Greatest Games program which I don't believe was ever offered for sale by NFL Films. I got this copy from Hulu back in 2011. Upscaled to 1080p and sharpened it using Topaz and adjusted minor color and contrast with Resolve

Even though I despised the Redskins, especially when they beat my team in the Super Bowl, I respected them. They had one of the best owners in Jack Kent Cooke and a fantastic coach in Gibbs. When those people were no longer associated with the franchise things have never been the same since. Just shows how much damage Snyder did with his reclessness. In 2024 it still feels weird calling them The Commanders. Just not the same organization that used to be full of pride and tradition.

@@ABrownVB63 I have to object to you saying 9ers "always getting blown out" when they went east. Yes the back to back losses at the NYG in 86 and 87 by a combined score of 66-6 were blowouts, but even the 86 loss was only 3-17, not necessarily a blowout but ok Ill give it to you. However this game here certainly was not a blowout and in walsh's final year (1988) he took the 9ers into chicago and his 9ers opened a can of whoop @ss on the bears 28-3 in the NFC championship game. The bears offense was rendered totally impotent by the SF D.

@@rawn4203 I meant Vikes and Packers not Bears. Read the stats and you'll definitely agree and don't forget the Redskins gm was over at half time just like the gms below. The call vs Lott was a non factor because Riggins had around 130 yards rushing and 2 TDs and would've punched it over anyway. Coming east in the cold in the playoffs is not good for them. It's called west coast offense for a reason. Lambeau Field, Green Bay, Wisconsin • Date: January 4, 1997 49ers14Packers35 21-7 at half time Riggins 123 yards in 1983 2 TDs 1988 in Minnie it was 20-3 lead at half

In the final years of John Riggins' playing for the Redskins, John Madden mentioned in his radio show that Riggins was generally so battered after the games that it would take a day or two of bed rest before Riggins felt up to moving around to prep for the upcoming Sunday game. That five minute radio segment Madden did was on San Francisco's KSFO, San Francisco, in the morning hours with radio host Gene Nelson.

That being said, those Washington teams in the early 80s were great, and the one guy I have the most respect for, was Darrell Green. EVERYBODY seems to have Deion as the best corner ever, but I dont think Deion was any better than Darrell was. Better promoter of himself? Sure, but Darrell Green was a STUD, and was as good of a corner AND punt returner as anybody in NFL history. GREAT football player.

6:55 I played in HS with #55, Carl Ekern. +43 in turnovers.... good lord.... Ronnie Lott was obviously a real hitter but so was Dwight Hicks, the FS. Only Joe Theismann could say with a straight face that his team was the greatest in NFL history after losing the SB 38-9.... Joe Gibbs is very modest. He was a hell of an offensive coach. He and his staff invented the Single Back offense to deal with Lawrence Taylor. As a young HS coach I worked at Freddie Solomon's camp. Freddie was a hell of a human being and the kids loved him. I must say that the two PI calls..... horrible.... Two excellent teams going at it. Thanks very much for posting this!

I personally know two of the officials in this game. They were assigned to it because their ratings were so high. But it does point out that even with a perfect rating -- which no official ever has in a game, let alone a whole season -- it doesn't mean they won't blow the heck out of the next call.

Boy, Joe Montana played when the NFC was at it's toughest. Reggie White's Eagles, the Dome Patrol, Lawrence Taylor's Giants, the Cowboys, Washington, Singletary and Ditka's Bears, the Rams, etc and still dominated while getting clobbered not some weak AFC East with QB friendly rules getting bailed out by tuck rules, an injured LOB squad, and a kicker. '87 made up for '83. I grew up a Skins fan. Everyone knows how good the 83 team was and what happened vs the Raiders. Raiders had revenge on their mind after losing to Skins earlier that season. The blowout was a hard pill to swallow. Fast forward 4 years. The Skins had all kinds of O probs that year. Not SF. What a lucky break 49ers go down to Vikings in what many still think is the greatest playoff upset ever. The door somehow opens for Skins to host NFC title game - and then of course we all know what happened vs Denver. Talk about stealing one!! '87 was redemption for '83. The '83 team was way better. My guess is had they lost that regular season game to LA instead of winning it their mindset in the SB would have been totally different.

To be fair, the Redskins would have distanced themselves if Mark Moseley doesn't have a hideous day at the office. To be double fair, the fielding out there was hideous. I do wonder if Dwight Clark had played would that have tipped the game in favor of SF. Those defensive penalty calls still sting today. Redskins were 10 point favorites which I find a little over-the-top even when taking into account the 14-2 season, smacking the Rams the previous week, and the 49ers escaping with a win against the Lions.

The call at 54:03 was worse than the call against Lott. All the whining and crying Monk did on the previous possession paid off. It must rank among the worst pass interference calls against a defense in NFL history. Absolutely shameful.

One of the things Mark May says in frames 54:24 to 54:29 is that Jerry Markbreit is one of the best refs in NFL history. This is his opinion. Now for my opinion. On that Sunday on Jan 8, 1984, the 49ers had that game taken away from them by terrible officiating late in the 4th quarter by Jerry Markbreit and the other official.

~~ the '83 Washington team was great - set the record for most points scored - (Moseley's foot accounted for a lot of that) - but Riggins was getting old and worn down by then - some forget he started his NFL career in 1971 - and they peaked a few weeks too early and were overconfident by this game - I had a strong feeling they would lose the SB to the Raiders after needing the zebras in this game to get past the 49ers ..

Brady could have played until he 65 years old but the emotional investment for him was no longer there.
