The 1993 Houston Oilers cruised into the playoffs on the back of an 11 game winning streak to claim home field advantage, making them impeccable favorites over the Chiefs. Ash Rogers Not only did Bud Adams stick it to his hometown by moving to Nashville, he also took the name and everything else “Oilers” related with him... Despite renaming the team in the teams second or third year in Tennessee, he still owned the trademark and copyrights for the Oilers and made it clear that he wouldn’t relinquish it to the new Houston expansion team... So basically he held a grudge against the city of Houston for not building the new stadium he wanted

Joe Montana is the greatest QB of all-time. Won 4 rings in 4 tries (2 before Rice) while having top 5 and 10 stats all-time. In the hardest era of football in terms of physicality with much lesser rules to favor the QB. Nobody else won 4 out of 4 Super Bowls with his all-time placing in stats or 5 out of 5 championships. Montana is the greatest. Did well outside of San Francisco too with a different coaching staff and player personnel. Don't confuse who you like more over who's greater. Montana is still the best.

Here's a fun and creepy fact. This game was the last playoff win for Kansas City until the 2015 season where they won in Houston, Texas against the Texans by a score of 30-0. The Chiefs in 2015 started out 1-5 and made the playoffs with a 11-5 record. The Houston Oilers in 1993 started out 1-4 and their only win in that 1-4 start was against the Chiefs by a score of 30-0 sound familiar

Warren Moon was a great quarterback, and threw the prettiest spiral I ever saw, but his teams constantly underachieved despite being loaded with talent. An offensive line with two HOFers, a deep receiving core with pro bowlers, a decent running back, a defensive line with three players who were all pro/pro bowl level, an excellent linebacker in Lamar Lathon, and a physical secondary led by Cris Dishman and Marcus Robertson. They were loaded. Bill Belichick said they were as talented a team as he had seen.

That was awesome. I'll always point to it as the reason why he's the greatest QB of all time because he replicated the same kind of drive against the Bengals in SB23 . But unlike that game, he had half the amount of time left to do so (1:29 as opposed to 3:10 in SB23) while playing on a team without all the great weapons he had offesively and it was against a much more talented and tough opponent HOF QB John Elway and the broncos. John probably was still pissed about that 55-10 blowout in SB 24 and wanted to make sure that it wouldn't ever happen, especially at mile high. And it was close but the GOAT was the victor that night.

The sad reality is the Oilers went up against 2 Hall of Fame QB's in the playoffs (Elway and Montana) that were as good as it gets when it comes to bringing their teams back late in the game. Bud Adams showed bad timing asking for a new stadium when the team had blown those playoff games and not preparing for the Salary Cap to retain at least some All Pro players. Hiring Jeff Fisher proved to be a mistake simply because he was mediocre at best. Bud Adams should have showed more patience with Pardee and the City of Houston .he would have gotten his stadium once the Oilers proved they can win and go deep in the playoffs I call this era for the team THE DOWNFALL The franchise will never again be this good or talented like the late 80's or early 90's Oilers

I was a Cowboys fan in the 80s and 90s. But I liked Joe Montana even though he was a 49er. I was a Cowboys fan, and hated the Oilers. About the time Jerry Jones begun to show his ass in Dallas, Montana showed up at the Astrodome and took out the Oilers. I took notice of the Chiefs on this historic night and a short time later, Jimmy Johnson was fired in Dallas for no good reason at all, and I was disappointed in Jerry Jones and I jumped ship to Kansas City and been a Chiefs fan ever since..

Blue Skeptic System QB - yeah right ... if you mean a master of 3 extremely different systems in his career; then yes. P/E ‘00 -‘06, run and shoot ‘07 - ‘09, and sophisticated P/E from ‘01 - ‘18!!! Also, look at salary cap allocations for offense vs defense, especially during his 1st dynasty! 70/30 in favor of defense - not built for statistics but maybe more clutch than he even is today. Also, how he eats, trains, and takes care of his body has made a mastery of the years in which Montana would have been retired because he was too beat up to play. Still no decline from Brady at 40-41, in fact, only better! As for Matt Cassel ... that’s the biggest bunch of bunk talked about of all time. Cassel sucked, even on the team that previously went 18-1. He took the same exact team to 11-5 and of the 5 - not 1 was a playoff team that year. It’s also the only the time the team missed the playoffs (today including) since 2002! In the years Brady has played in his career, he’s reached the Super Bowl 50% of the time ... or simply, every other year. That’s ridiculous. I’m not hating on Joe. Being a Patriots fan I still to this day I humbly say Joe was the best. I’ve seen them both play their entire careers and as a young guy always said I just hope one day the Patriots can get a quarterback like Joe. Sorry, but not only have they landed their Joe, he’s succeeded him. Brady is the Goat and at this point, it’s not even close!

Started 1-4, reeled off 11 in a row, unexpectedly, to go 12-4. Like the best record in franchise history to my knowledge. Overcame the tragic death of Jeff Alm during the season. Set up probably the most anticipated playoff expectations and still lost, at home, one win away from the ACF championship game. This one hurt and was never recovered from. the 99 titans superbowl loss to the rams, I did not know how to feel about that. 5 months later the Houston Rockets helped us forget about all that. Until then, we were as a city thoroughly convinced that our sports history, dating back to the sixties, was cursed. The Rockets too put together a string of playoff seasons around the same time period like the oilers did (86/87 - 93) with much underwhelming results (86 finals not withstanding).

I absolutely loved those Oilers uniforms! Something about the uniforms, the run and shoot and the Astro Dome seemed to fit perfectly. When I heard they were moving to Tennessee I was sad simply as a football fan. I didn't like the Raiders or Rams leaving LA at that time either. The Raiders had developed such an identity in LA to go back to Oakland at that point was crazy imo. The Coliseum's 90k seats, NFL TV blackout rules and Al Davis hating the NFL league office ultimately led to the move. The late 80's, early 90's Oilers were a really fun team to watch but as has been well documented, couldn't win in the playoffs. The Eagles were very similar in terms of doing the least with most in the NFC during this era.

One subplot about this game nobody talks about: it was one of the last NFL games before the institution of the 2PC After KC went up 21-13 on that crazy Willie Davis TD catch, Houston got a touchdown but had to kick the extra point instead of a chance to tie the game up Heck if they still kick the extra point, after Marcus Allen’s TD at 28-20 the game wouldn’t have been over yet

I remember hearing on the local KC news about how Houston had boycotted 'KC Masterpiece' BBQ sauce that week. I listened back then to Len Dawson and Kevin Harlan on the radio announce the game and they kept playing this silly song inside the dome that made Len Dawson state "it makes me want to do something I can't say on the radio" LOL. I also remember the Keith Cash (a great player) spiking the ball into that ridiculous Buddy Ryan poster in the end zone. Good times-but it was always Buffalo, Schottenheimer's awful important game choke sessions, and getting rid of Nick Lowery, one of the best kickers in the NFL the next year that sealed our fate in the 'kicker that shall not be named' game against the Colts that we should have dominated.

Hard to believe the Oilers had a 10-0 lead, then had the ball near midfield with almost 2 minutes to go in the first half... TWO Moon fumbles to close out the half kept them from putting this game away. What a waste of talent to squander this opportunity. Then, up 10-7 and moving the ball methodically near the end of the 3rd Q, Moon throws a horrible INT. Under no pressure, he just heaved one up for grabs. BUT, the defense held, and the Oilers get the ball at midfield, and KC used its last timeout. Have no fear, though, Chiefs fans, Warren Moon will hand you the game. On successive plays, he fumbles, threw an incompletion, then has to call a TO, then completes a pass that is way short of a 1st down. Punt. That's FOUR straight possessions that Moon makes terrible play after terrible play, including 3 turnovers. Montana takes over at his own FIVE, throws an INT at the 24. Moon to the rescue! Surely he can lead them 24 yards for a TD... HELL NO. He gets sacked, but they salvage a FG to make it 13-7. FIVE straight possessions, good field position on every one of them, and Moon manages one measly FG. That folks, is why they lost the game. Moon got outplayed by a older QB who was struggling to even take the field. I'd like to know if they blew more double digit leads in the playoffs than any other team in history. They were up 24-13 against Denver, 35-3 against Buffalo, and this game 10-0. Three straight years, they had a playoff game in control, only to completely unravel. That's the reason I disagreed with Moon's induction into the PFHOF. Truly great QBs are LEADERS, and they don't let their teams blow big leads. Time after time after time, Moon could never put the dagger into a team when the Oilers had them on the ropes. The Hall of Fame is for players who were champions, especially when it comes to QBs. Warren Moon is Tony Romo. Neither one belongs in the Hall.

Eduardo Gutierrez that would make more sense if there were more 40 year old quarterbacks today. Look at Peyton Manning when he retired.. I think my mother could have thrown the ball deeper than him.

4:55...that's probably called a personal foul nowadays. Don't tell me about Tom Brady when you can't even breathe on a QB now and receivers are allowed pretty much free reign to run routes unencumbered. Also, I think this was one of the games that nudged owners to vote in the 2-pt conversion. Allen's TD basically iced a game. How many games in recent history would've been different without a 2-pt conversion opportunity?

I remember this game. A violent game. They threw the kitchen sink at Joe. He kept on getting back up. Had that look in his eyes…. Then he made them pay…..👍🏻

This game was the unofficial end of the Houston Oilers . Warren Moon went to the Vikings that next year , Buddy went on to be Head Coach of the Arizona Cardinals, and Jack Pardee got fired in I believe 94. We never like to get into what ifs but this is probably one of the biggest what ifs in football history. This Oilers team was red blazing hot going into the playoffs. They started 1-4 I believe and won the rest of their games . They were supposed to win this game, win and break Buffalo’s super bowl appearance streak, and face Dallas in a all Texas super bowl . They lost to a old pass his prime Joe Montana . Very sad lost . They were definitely one of my favorite teams that year . I loved Buddy Ryan being a lifelong bears fan , and his blitzing attacking style .

For those new to football here to watch Montana some wisdom. The most important part of a good offense is the line. Without a good line a QB has no time to throw and a RB has no hole to run through. This KC offensive line was one of the best in the league at the time, and one of the best the Chiefs have ever had. These guys could block. The starting quarterback get's all the girls, but it didn't happen without the hogs on the line.

I was at this game with a friend and customer who was a former policeman in a wheelchair.. We entered the field from the tunnel and paused in the endzone while they sang the national anthem, we sat behind the Oiler bench. I stood by as his attendant. It was surreal. Until 2:00 to the end. Montana lobbing passes and Dishman was sucking oxygen. I think I was the ONLY fan who knew what Joe Montana could do. I saw it in person that day. It was a spectacular game and a crushing defeat.

@@BobBob-eb4io I disagree with the 2000s.The rules were changed around that time to alter the game from the 90s and earlier. The product on the field today is not close to what it was before 2000
