He's always seemed kinda cocky to me, which is different because usually US players are more so (Jack Eichel, Trevor Zegras, etc).

Nah, Byfield is no Kopitar. He is a different type of player but there is much improvement i have noticed this season and how he gets on top of defenders and just skates with more authority. I have no clue how good he can be. Tage Thompson had a similar start to his NHL career and they are of similar size so maybe he can figure it out like Tage did but I'm guessing that it will he at least this season and next before anyone knows what Byfield really is as a player. He isn't a bust per se at all. He is an NHL player in that regard but he can still disappoint. He has some weaknesses like his skating is kind of awkward and a bit choppy and he doesn't seem to possess a great wrister but his hands are excellent and has shown some real playmaking abilities along with a very long reach to keep the cycle going and get pucks to shooters.

I agree about Holtz underwhelming. He could turn it around but there’s nothing at all in his game that’s wowed me at the NHL level.

Lafreniere has 1 goal only in the first 3 games that’s true. But I’d say he has looked better in puck battles, forechecking and making plays in the neutral zone thus far. Underwhelming for nr.1? Yes. Bust? No.

I guess it sticks out because they're our two Russians, but as a Canuck's fan it's tough to watch Podkolzin's decline since his rookie year, while Kuzmenko in his first year gets almost 40 goals. Ooof.

Laffy is going to be a bust by the end of this year if he doesn't produce outstanding numbers. He's on a decent team with lots of quality support. That should make his job easier, but he's not producing.

You're so wrong on QB. He was never expected to step right in. His size had nothing to with him making it right away. He was expected to be a few years out. He was one of the youngest kids in the draft.

Byfield was not though to be more NHL ready! The opposite is true. He was drafted for his potential. It was clear to everyone Stuzle was the most ready. Just wrong about that.

LaFreniere just doesn't have the skating ability to be a difference maker and his overall skillset was wildly misjudged by everyone. He'll be a mediocre middle six forward

I'll admit, I thought Alexis Lafreniere had a lot of potential, but he has definitely been a major disappointment so far. I don't know if it's him or how he's been developed, but he put up monster numbers in juniors, but just can't put it together in the NHL. You look at where Tim Stutzle is for Ottawa and where Lafreniere is and right now, Stutzle looks like the class of that first round thus far. I don't want to call Lafreniere a bust but if he doesn't break out this year, then I think you have to start potentially labeling him as a bust. If you look at the 1st overall pick before Lafreniere, which was Jack Hughes, he didn't come running out of the gates immediately. It took Jack Hughes by year three where he started to really break out and he put it all together last year and is going to be a star in this league for a long time. You haven't seen that from Alexis Lafreniere.

Hughes in particular is a great skater and Stutzle isnt bad either. LaFreniere is above average skater at best and can't make plays with the puck under pressure or create his own space. Definitely not going to be the player every scout thought he was. That book is closed.

I don’t think you can call any of them a bust just yet. Everybody grows in different ways. Some take quite a few years to find their stride. Also, Byfield has quite a late birthday so he’ll need time.
